Occupied Norway, 1943. After seeing an allied plane go down over the mountains, headstrong fifteen year-old Kari Dahlstrøm sets out to locate the wreck. She soon finds the cocky American pilot Lance Mahurin and offers to take him to Sweden, pretending she’s a member of the resistance. While her widower father Erling and the disillusioned Nazi Oberleutnant Conrad Moltke hunt them down, Kari begins … begins to fall for Lance, dreaming of a life with him in America. Over the course of the harrowing journey, though, Kari learns hard truths about those around her as well as discovering unforeseen depths within herself.

I thought the ending was getting predictable… but then it wasn’t. Imagery was good. And although some words were in a language I don’t speak, it didn’t detract from the story.
An interesting historical account of Norwegian patriotism during the II World War. The scenery was beautifully described and the characters, except for the downed pilot, were well developed.
Disappointing
Did not finish
Good story well written but very depressing
I would like to have had a few more pages to wrap it up but I did enjoy reading it.
Wonderful description really took you in to the mountains. Very weak plot would not recommend.
Very enjoyable.
Thought provoking. Without knowing the geography (foreign names a foreign country), I sometimes got lost on where the story was and where the characters were in relation to others.
Good ending, liked the characterization of the Norwegian girl and American pilot best.
Hard dark truths. Seemed unfinished
I loved this book!
Disappointing, characters not truly developed
I recommend this book. We rarely hear about WW II in Norway and this was an eye opener for me.
Different perspective of WWIi
I felt as if I was part of the group saving the pilot! I was sorry it ended so soon. I was hoping she would have stayed with the pilot instead of returning home.
enjoyed this story very realistic and correct to that time
A very interesting book depicting the struggles of WWII.
The father’s loss and the strained relationship with the daughter are an undeveloped pretext to the adventure trying to save the downed pilot. There’s too much description of the landscape on the journey to Sweden. It takes the reader’s attention off the story.
Good historical novel.
