Lies always catch up with the ones keeping them, and Alyeesah has several. Caught up in her pretence as a Princess, Alyeesah learns about her prophecy when it’s almost too late, and if she’s going to stop it and win the heart of her prince, then she’ll have to move quickly. With someone else pulling the strings, and the rest of the academy just waiting for her to make a mistake, it might even … mistake, it might even take Alyeesah’s third wish to get herself out of trouble.

I’m sad I’ve still not read book 4 and though stand alone it kinda needs book 4 for a few nuanced details
Still a great retelling of Aladdin and definitely worth the read
Now to go read book 4

‘Lamps and Lies’ is the fifth book in Laura Greenwood’s “Grimm Academy” series, and in my opinion, the best one so far! Based on the fairytale “Aladdin and the Lamp” Ms. Greenwood has given the lead character role to Aly, a female street urchin with a heart of gold who has learned to survive on the streets as best she can. When she finds a gold ring in the street a genie appears. Yep, you guessed it, she now has three wishes. She wants to become a Princess, attend Grimm Academy, and find a Prince of her own. Since this is a quick, easy-read I don’t want to give away too much of the story but the genie has gone above and beyond what I’ve been taught when someone asks for wishes. But even at that, Aly has no idea about prophecies until she has one of her own and it’s almost too late. I absolutely loved getting lost in this one.
A gender-bent, modern academy retelling of Aladdin. This street urchin with a heart of gold isn’t looking for a prince, just a chance at a better life – a roof over her head, a full belly. When opportunity comes her way in the form of a genie, she her wish is to go to Grimm Academy, where she hopes to meet someone who will marry and take care of her – at which point she plans to come clean and hopes it will all be good. Maybe not the most well thought out of plans. As you can imaging, one lie leads to another and things rarely go to plan.
Fun addition to the series. This one was interesting in that every previous student was sent to the academy because of a prophesy, and Aly doesn’t know anything about prophesies. I liked her friendship with the genie and the romantic relationship that developed. The conflict suited the story well, but reminded me in places of a middle school sitcom.
This is the 5th book in the Grimm Academy series, but all can be read as standalones. This book does have a couple cameos but no real ties to other books or characters.
A different retelling of Aladdin. Not the type of
book I usually read. But all in all a very good book. Enjoyed reading…

Can a Fake Princess Have a Real Prophecy?
I have so enjoyed the Grimm Academy stories by this author. She always manages to create a very inventive twist on an old fairy tale. This one is a take on Aladdin and the Lamp. The book starts with a struggling young woman from the wrong side of the tracks, so to speak, living a hardscrabble existence. Her life is altered forever when she finds a magical ring with a genie attached to it. As typically happens in genie stories, he offers to grant her three wishes, with a few notable exceptions. One thing I like about this story is that the genie truly seems to care about her. He not only grants her wish to be a princess but helps her to be more princess like, assisting with reading, writing, and acting with proper decorum. He even continues to aid her after he has granted the three wishes. Unfortunately, this book did have some issues with grammar, punctuation, and usage. Random commas were left in where they should not have been. The book had multiple run-on sentences. Sometimes “that” and “which” were not appropriately used. As I received an ARC copy, I did check the published edition here, but unfortunately, these errors persist in that. Other than that, as always, a great spin on a classic fairy tale by this talented and imaginative author.
4.5 rounded up to 5
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
Alyeesah (Aly) grew up on the streets. She finds a ring with a genie. She uses one of her wishes to become a princess and attend Grimm Academy. She wants to meet a rich nobleman so she can live a comfortable life. While at the Grimm Academy she meets Prince Enver. She feels terrible lying to Enver. Will Enver forgive her when he finds out who she really is? Alyeesah is a sweet girl who feels terrible for all the wrongs she has done. She wants to save her last wish to free the Genie. Will Alyeesah be able to free the Genie? The author has built a great enchanted world in this series about the Grimm Academy. The characters are endearing. This story is a twist on Aladdin. The story flows and keeps you entertained. I look forward to the next book in the Grimm Academy. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and I am voluntarily leaving a review.
This is book five of the Grimm Academy series and is a retelling with a twist of Aladdin and the Genie. In this story, the young street urchin is female and called Aly. She is starving and trying to steal some coins from a woman’s purse, in order to buy herself some food, when her mark drops her shopping. Aly manages to snaffle an apple that drops by her feet, but instead of going for her open purse, she hands the lady her shopping. When the lady leaves, she spots something on the ground and takes it back to her sleeping place, before looking at it any closer, in case it is valuable. As she tries to clean some dirt from the object a genie appears and once she gets over her shock, she realises that her dreams could be about to come true.
She wishes to appear to be a princess and get to attend the famous Grimm Academy, where she would have the chance to find a wealthy husband. She takes on a fake kingdom and an extended name, Alyeesah, as well as months of training from the genie, for her new role. She meets a handsome prince called Enver, but knows she can’t offer him anything his family will want, but hopes he can help her to meet some lesser nobles, who may like her for herself and she can actually reveal her true identity to. But as with most of the people who enter the Academy, she has a prophecy and doesn’t even know about it until almost far too late.
One of the other students seems to know a lot more about who she really is, than should be possible and tries to blackmail Aly into doing as she wants, stealing something magical and then helping her to take someone else’s place, to allow her to advance in her own plans. This other person wants power for themselves and will do anything they can to get it, no matter the cost to Aly. Her secrets will be revealed to all, especially the fellow student she is beginning to fall for, as it seems this other person has lots of other students watching her every step and ready to pounce when she makes any sort of mistake! Aly was hoping to save her third and final wish, to release the genie, but he has repeatedly said that that is not possible, that failsafe having been eliminated hundreds of years ago. She wasted her second wish on a flimsy piece of fabric and should really have saved it for something much more important.
A nice twist on the Aladdin story, of someone from the streets pretending to be higher born than they are, to get the heart of someone who can make their live so much easier in the future. Add in the use of the infamous genie and a gentle relationship between him and Aly, this brings a nice touch to the story, before another student tries to blackmail her into doing something that would harm another. True love will always win out over evil and Aly’s third wish is ever more important for her future. Lovely short tale, which is better for the extra bits that have been added since the original. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
Lamps And Lies (Grimm Academy #5) by Laura Greenwood is an awesome story to read. This is book number five in this awesome series that I have been hooked on and can not wait to read the rest. I highly recommend this story to everyone who loves reading about non-bully academy romance and fantasy.

This is book 5 in Greenwood’s Grimm Academy series and is the re-telling of Aladdin and the story of Aly and Enver. Greenwood is amazing at paranormal romance writing as well as giving us amazing fairy tale retells and this is no exception to her mastery. A quick, fun, romance read that will have you falling in love with this story in a whole new way!

Everyone has a prophecy. Even a poor girl who cheated her way into Grimm Academy.
Aly finds a magical ring with a genie inside and wishes to be a pretend Princess so she can attend Grimm Academy and met and marry a wealthy man. But the genie becomes her friend and she wants to free him, even though he says there is a failsafe and he can’t be freed. When a scheming princess targets Aly, and blackmails her into endangering another student, will Aly comply to save her position at Grimm Academy, or will she give up her riches and status, and lose the love of her life in order to do the right thing? Another wonderful story by Laura Greenwood. I could’t wait to see what happened next for Aly. I have really enjoyed this series by Ms. Greenwood.
Aly knows that stealing is wrong but when you have no home or job, you do what you need in order to eat. She helps an older woman thinking that she could snatch some gold coins. At the last minute, she realizes that she couldn’t do it. She finds a ring instead and inside is a genie. She makes a wish to have the chance to go to Grimm Academy. She pretends to be a princess and is doing good until Prince Enver comes to Grimm. She begins to spend time with him and knows that she needs to tell the truth. What will happen when someone else threatens her?

What if Aladdin was the price and our heroine the one with the magic lamp?
This is the fifth book in this series which combines classic fairy tales with an academy setting. Each book is written as a standalone, so it is not necessary to read them in order, although you will be missing a bit of the setting background.
The story is well written and easy to read, and it is fun to watch characters that are familiar tell entirely new stories. The setting and characters are nicely done and we get a bit more depth to the setting as the series progresses. Here we get a good story with an easy to follow plot that is nonetheless engaging and keeps your interest. Aladdin has always been a favorite of mine, so reading this story was particularly enjoyable. Overall, this continues a fun premise and an excellent series.
Highly recommended

Lamps and Lies is filled with twists and turns that made this a page turning read. I loved this author’s version of Aladdin and how Aly gets three wishes. I really love this author’s imagination and her descriptive writing. The storyline is great and the characters are well developed.
Book five in the Grimm Academy series another well written story that kept me turning pages. This is based on the fairy tale of Aladdin and the Lamp. I enjoyed reading Alyeesah/Aly and Enver’s story of suspense, drama, danger, blackmail. a Genie, lies, and romance. I want to read the next book. I love the fairy tale retellings by Laura Greenwood. This story, which is a retelling of Aladdin, is no different. We have Aly, who is essentially taking the place of Aladdin, who is a beggar and through a wish has become a princess and is able to attend Grimm Academy in hopes of marrying a prince and having a better life than she had previously. There is Prince Envar, who is technically Jasmine, who ends up developing feelings for her. All the things from the original fairy tale were present, yet the story was completely different. This was a wonderful story in the Grimm Academy series.

This has a great twist to the Aladdin retelling and I was here for it. It’s different but exciting and it kept me engaged because I really did not know or could anticipate what would happen.
Alyeesah (“Aly”) is a street-smart kid who is hungry most of the time. When she sees an older lady overburdened with bags, she figures she can snatch something to sell perhaps? But when she approaches, she offers to help the woman instead of stealing from her. When she finds a ring, a genie appears to give her three wishes.
Her genie is not like others we may have read about. He teaches Aly how to read, write, clothe herself properly, and other skills that would help her fit into a better life. This story reflects aspects of Aladdin’s Lamp with some nice twists that give the reader an entirely new experience. There is plenty more coming in Aly’s story for your enjoyment. Grab your copy and enjoy the magic that this author weaves into her wonderful books!
I enjoyed this retelling since roles were switched and instead of the street rat Aladdin it was Alyeesah. Her story where instead of doing a bad thing, she did a good one instead and found a ring with a genie. Her prophecy, the genie, y and Grimm Academy time made for another good story in this series.

This is an Aladdin retelling with the amazing spin that Laura Greenwood puts on all of her books. This story follows Aly as she poses as a princess in order to find her prince. Definitely a great read that I would recommend.

Laura Greenwood is a genius. To take something as timeless as the tale of Aladdin and turn into something all her own is nothing short of genius. IMHO
