In this thrilling and suspenseful fantasy set in the world of the New York Times bestselling Others series, an inn owner and her shape-shifting lodger find themselves enmeshed in danger and dark secrets.Human laws do not apply in the territory controlled by the Others–vampires, shape-shifters, and even deadlier paranormal beings. And this is a fact that humans should never, ever forget….After … never, ever forget….
After her divorce, Vicki DeVine took over a rustic resort near Lake Silence, in a human town that is not human controlled. Towns such as Vicki’s don’t have any distance from the Others, the dominant predators who rule most of the land and all of the water throughout the world. And when a place has no boundaries, you never really know what is out there watching you.
Vicki was hoping to find a new career and a new life. But when her lodger, Aggie Crowe–one of the shape-shifting Others–discovers a murdered man, Vicki finds trouble instead. The detectives want to pin the death on her, despite the evidence that nothing human could have killed the victim. As Vicki and her friends search for answers, ancient forces are roused by the disturbance in their domain. They have rules that must not be broken–and all the destructive powers of nature at their command.

This was my first entry into Anne Bishop’s world of The Others. It was very fun and it was one of those books I read just at the right time. I love the world, love her “Others” as they are delightfully not human–not just other creatures with human motivations. I am definitely checking out the series.
I have to say that I liked this book just as much as I did previous books even though it was a completely different set of characters. The storyline had gotten a little stale with the previous books focusing on Simon and Meg (who are sooo boring together). I really like this whole new cast of characters. I hope there’s more of them in future installments.
Top notch spin off from a fantastic series. I could do with a little less wimpy heroine.
This is the latest in Anne Bishop’s “Others” series, and I have LOVED every single one of them. First in the series is “Written in Red”. Highly recommend!
She has a quirky way of blending fear and humor. I love her Others series.
The world of the others have created a worthy off brand…this story rocked…hard I loved it 5 out of 5 stars
I love this series and wasn’t so sure about branching out from the main characters! I think this was a really good story and the people (and others) created a new way to carry out the story. I do hope we go back to hear about the original characters story line also!!
“…they might have learned to mimic human behavior better than any other form of terra indigene, but they were, and always would be, predators. And human would always be their prey…”
The Urban Fantasy genre has a very special place in my heart, and it’s very difficult for me to find new ones that keep me interested. I started The Others series immediately after the first book Written in Red released in March 2013. I completely fell in love with the world Anne Bishop created. Everything fit perfectly together and I just couldn’t get enough of it. It had multiple POVs, but it didn’t matter because it was the only way the series could be told. It gave a perfect view into how all the different beings thought and (re)acted. It immediately became one of my favorite UF series. I couldn’t wait to get my hands on the next books. So when the author announced that book five: Etched in Bone, would conclude Meg and Simon’s story arc I was very sad but all good things must come to an end.
When I saw that there would be a spin-off set in the same world I was over the moon. However, I did hope it would meet the epicness of the previous books. I shouldn’t have doubted the author because it did meet every expectation I had for this book. I was sucked in right from the start and the new characters were all very intriguing and original. I felt a connection to them, and the mix between mystery and suspense was perfect. The main character, Vicki DeVine, is not someone you would usually find in the UF books, at least not as a main character. She has deep wounds that haven’t healed yet, and it shows when she finds herself in very uncomfortable and horrible situations. She was a very refreshing and intriguing character. And all the side characters played a very important role as well. I especially LOVED Aggie Crowe–one of the shapeshifting Others.
The minds of the Others work in a completely different way, however they protect their own and have your back if they accept you into their circle. The Others were amazing and I loved how they handled things in this book. There was mystery, suspense, action, humor and so much more. I did not go into the plot because the blurb gives more than enough information. This book can be read as a stand-alone, however I would definitely recommend you read the previous books just to get an idea of the world Anne Bishop has created. Trust me, it is one of the most original and amazing worlds in the UF genre. So I really hope everyone (even readers who usually don’t read Fantasy) give this series a chance.
Audiobook review: Lake Silence wasn’t quite what I was expecting. I absolutely love this series and did enjoy this story but I was a bit disappointed in the protagonist, Vicki. I would have liked her to grow more emotionally, take strength in her accomplishments to booth herself worth and not taking crap from anyone. The overall story felt a bit like a repeat, different characters with similar outcomes just a new location. The narrator did an awesome job with providing unique voices for each character and appropriate tone inflections for each scene.
Lake Silence is the first book in a new series set in the same world as The Others. Taking place after the terre indigene decimated the Humans First and Last movement (HFL) reminding humans that they are not the dominant species on Namid. Vicki DeVine, our main protagonist, has received The Jumble, a rustic lake resort, in her divorce settlement. After spending a lot of money making it habitable she’s finally rented out one of the cabins. When she finds her renter, Aggie Crowgard, cooking up a human eyeball in the microwave she realizes there is a dead body on her property. Vicki calls it in and gets more trouble than help. That rather gruesome yet quick start sets the tone for the remainder of the story and I quickly ate it up (sans eyeball, thanks very much!)
Lake Silence is filled with a fantastic group of quirky characters. Vicki has self confidence issues stemming from the abused relationship she had with her ex. Seeing Lake Silence and the inhabitants through her eyes, you are given a very clear view of who are the good guys and who are the bad. When the police show up to investigate, Highway Patrol officer Grimshaw, reminiscent of Lt. Montgomery from the previous Others books, is completely honorable. Even in the face of the terrifying terre indigene, he looks past their scary faces and see’s the dangerous humans as more terrible. Ex-cop Julian, who previously worked with Grimshaw, is now a bookstore owner in the town of Sproinger. Friendly with Vicki, he becomes an integral part of the investigation and ultimately the conclusion. There is also a hint of a future romance between he and Vicki if he can get past her reticence to have any kind of relationship with a man. There are a couple of familiar characters, but other than a hint or suggestion of characters in previous novels, this is a whole new cast. I was disappointed at first but quickly became enraptured with being back in this fascinating world and meeting a new group of terre indigene and humans I could come to like just as well as Meg, Simon and the other inhabitants of the Lakeside Courtyard. Lake Silence is not just a quick fix but I can easily see it becoming another addiction.
I really don’t want to get into the plot of the story anymore than I already have since each element builds up to a great climax. I will say that at one point our characters play a game called Murder, which is similar to the game Clue that we all played as kids. When the terre indigene offer up their own version of the game you really see the contrast between being terre indigene and being human. I loved the dark humor that Anne Bishop added to that scene and Vicki’s internal dialog was pretty funny throughout the book.
I really enjoyed this new tale of the world of “the others”. The development of the central characters was nice. I look forward to the next tale in this world.
Veers off from the Novels of the Others series, but in a close tangent. Wonderful story; wonderful characters; usual outstanding writing
Anne Bishop’s Others series is about very different groups of people overcoming obstacles and working together to survive. Her characters are unforgettable and the story line unique. I very seldom reread books but am on my third reading of the Others series. Lake Silence is an excellent addition to the series, in the same world and circumstances but with new characters. i highly recommend all in this series.
I enjoyed this book. Not as much as the first Other’s series; but these are new characters. I am hoping for more. I am super interested in the developing out of the Elementals and other scary “others”. Has the same world so it was not something to get interested in. I am a series person. I fall in love with characters so am excited about learning more about them.
Must read if you’ve read the others books buthat it’s different the others act different kinder in this book more human so I can’t rate this book as high as the originals. This book took place shortly after the first story but the elder was easy on the humans? Seeing the the Elementals being easier was almost possible but not believable from what we understood from the first series so fun read but didn’t make that much sense from what we’re read and understood from the original series
My review is on GoodReads.
Once again Anne Bishop takes you to a land far away, a land you never want to leave. Her writing style is one I’ve never come across before. The writing was flawless and captivating. The characters were riveting and mesmerizing. With one sentence you are swept away in a fantastical world where the beings mimic humans and humans try and make peace with being “clever meat”. I love the multiple POVs, I feel like I get so many more answers and questions that way. I love getting into the head of the Others and finding out how they think. Ms. Bishop is a genius who can weave a new thought pattern in these Others. What makes it even more unique is that no two types of terra indigene thinks the same.
We meet the terra indigene and this incredible world in Anne Bishop’s earlier series, The Others. Honestly this reads as one of the cozy Inuit thrillers they talk about in that earlier series. Vicki is trying to get by living at The Jumble, a place she received in her divorce settlement. At the time she had no idea it was to be used as a Other training camp. When a dead body shows up, mystery and intrigue come from every corner. With the help of Aggie Crowe and Ilya Sanguinati she must find out why she’s being threatened and who wants her property.
I love Vicki, Julian, Grimshaw, Aggie, Ineke, and Ilya. Each character brings a new dynamic to the story that sucks you into the mystery. All of the POVs interconnect to bring you a whole wider view of this world and it’s inhabitants. Ms. Bishop brings back old style mystery with a twist, and I’m very much in love with it. My new favorite beings are the lake Elders and the Lady of the Lake. Imagination went wild with them and they are such a great new addition to the world.
I didn’t want this book to end and I found myself trying to slow down with every chapter. It was so hard to put down. I can’t wait to see more from Spriong. Definitely a must buy, a must read.
