MY REVIEW
When a lady with few prospects enters in a relationship with a lord determined to never marry …
This is my second read by Mrs Audrey Harrison and I must say it is as witty and clever as the first one, Lord Livesey’s Bluestocking, I will be more than happy.
In this slow-burn romance, the many twists and turns the narrative follows surprised me, it has all the romance’s codes but Mrs Harrison adds her own touch and it makes all the difference.
It was like landing in a Jane Austen’s world with more daring characters.
Lady Edith would have been a great friend to Elizabeth Bennet with her stubborn trait, astute mind and sharp tongue.
She by entering in a chosen path instead of waiting for fate to maybe drop the so awaited future groom at her feet, she proves she is no demure miss.
She knows she does not conform to society’s expectations, she has requirements and she won’t settle for less.
Mrs Harrison paints her perfectly, she is not flawless, and with a temper, she can quickly get angry, still she knows her faults. While she follows the rules she was bred in, she plays with them. She will never be an easy prey for any fortune hunter, she might have a beacon of a dowry, it will not be what will attract her future husband or she won’t have any.
Her easy banter with her brother shows her brightness and unusual view of life. They throw quips and barbs but love and respect the other.
Lord Pensby is,in some way punishing himself, having delusional ideas that by marrying he will endanger his mother’s fragile health. He so fears to loose her, he entraps her in a gilded cage, it is still a cage.
He is fooling himself instead of opening his thoughts and heart, he does disservice them both. Thus he does not trust her to share his burden and this way he hurt her and by choosing to sacrifice their possible happiness he shows the low opinion he has of her intelligence and resourcefulness.
I just loved this book, it displays the author’s talent with words, giving her characters all the colors of the rainbow to bring to live in our mind and heart.
Here, everyone is at its right place, they speak to their servants as peers would, without being rude, still there are those upstairs and the ones below, they act true.
I can only recommend this story to every Jane Austen tales’ lovers.

Audrey was born about two hundred years too late. She wants to belong to a time when men were men and women were dressed in gowns and could float, simper and sigh. In the real world she has always longed to write, writing a full manuscript when she was fourteen years old. Work, marriage and children got in the way as they do and it was only when an event at work landed her in hospital that she decided to take stock. One Voluntary Redundancy later, she found that the words and characters came to the forefront and the writing began in earnest. So, although at home more these days, the housework is still neglected and meals are still late on the table, but she has an understanding family, who usually shake their heads at her and sigh. That is a sign of understanding, isn’t it?

Lady Edith’s Lonely Heart is the first book I’ve had the pleasure to read by author Audrey Harrison and it won’t be the last. It was a wonderful story and I look forward to checking out the rest of her books.
Lady Edith Longdon is considered past her prime at the age of twenty-three. She’s spent three years in mourning due to her father and her two brother’s deaths. Not impressed with the men she’s come across as possible suitors, Edith decides to place an ad in the newspaper for a more suitable match.
Lord Ralph Pensby’s mother has an illness that prevents him from leaving her side for too long. While in London he spends time with his only friend, Miles Stanley, Earl of Longdon. When Ralph gets to know Miles’s sister Edith, he wishes his circumstances were different so that he might have a life he only dreams of.
I really enjoyed this couple and their storyline! I liked Edith, she’s intelligent, beautiful, brave, and has a good sense of humor with a great personality. I enjoyed her relationship with her brother Miles and the witty dialogue between them. I also admired her for trying to take control of her own destiny, even though placing an ad was risky for her. As for Ralph, he’s a good son who has sacrificed his happiness for his mother. You sense his desolation and loneliness and yet when he’s around Edith he comes to life! She challenges him, makes him laugh and it’s obvious there is an attraction. I hoped Edith would be able to help him see they belonged together. Ralph’s mother was a fantastic character and I loved her interactions with Edith and Ralph. I would love to see a sequel to this story for Miles and Susan and hopefully, get a glimpse of this couple again along with Ralph’s mother! Ralph and Edith were such a great couple and I absolutely loved the letters he penned to Edith! They were heartfelt and showed a sign of Ralph that made me fall for him myself!
Ms. Harrison wrote a fabulous story for this couple with wonderful secondary characters. I enjoyed her writing style and will look forward to checking out her backlist. A fantastic, sweet Regency story and a new author to follow, highly recommend it!
