“A colorful and inventive adventure tale.”—Washington Post “It’s True Grit, New York style.”—New York Post “One of the best mystery novels of the year: wonderful and very entertaining.” —New York Journal of Books “Stewart deftly combines the rough-and-tumble atmosphere of early twentieth-century New York City with the story of three women who want to live life on their own terms.”—Library … women who want to live life on their own terms.”

In 1915, lady cops were not expected to chase down fugitives on the streets of New York City. But Constance Kopp never did what anyone expected.
Constance and her sisters aren’t living the quiet life anymore. They’ve made headlines fighting back against a ruthless silk factory owner and his gang of thugs. After Sheriff Heath sees Constance in action, he appoints her as one of the nation’s first female deputies. But when a German-speaking con man threatens her position—and puts the honorable sheriff at risk for being thrown in his own jail—Constance will be forced to prove herself again.
Based on the Kopp sisters’ real-life adventures, Girl Waits with Gun introduced the sensational lives of Constance Kopp and her sisters to an army of enthusiastic readers. This second installment, also ripped from the headlines, takes us farther into the riveting story of a woman who defied expectations, forged her own path, and tackled crime along the way.
“A fast-moving, craftily written novel.”—BookPage
“[An] irresistible madcap adventure.”—PopSugar
“Stewart leaves the reader wondering about one mystery still developing unsolved . . . Readers will just have to wait—impatiently, no doubt—for book No. 3.”—Boston Globe

I love how the author has created this fictionalized historical character, with her own foibles and her amusing (and endearing) stubbornness.
Lady Cop Makes Trouble
is Amy Stewart’s clever fictionalized account of tbe career of the first female deputy in America, Constance Kopp. She got her start as a jail matron in 1914. The reader is taken along on adventures based on real life incidents, and given poignant insights into the lives of female prisoners of that era, as well as family life for women in general. She didn’t have a smooth and easy path to earning her badge, especially after she was responsible for accidentally allowing a high profile prisoner to escape from the jail. But she was determined, and her enlightened Sheriff / Boss / Friend stood by her. I won’t give away anything else, but suffice it to say that it was both an informative and fun book to read.
I love this book series based on the first female Sheriff’s Deputy in the early 1900’s. Constance Kopp is a fantastic character and is surrounded by others as well. The crime solving stories are interesting while Amy Stewart does a great job of showing what it must have been like to be a woman police officer at that time.
Another great book by Amy Stewart.
This book continues where the first book left off. I thought the writer did an excellent job of taking factual events and cobbling them into an action packed detective story. I really appreciated the detailed bibliography at the end of the book relating which events were born of truth and which were born of the author’s imagination. The passing tale of alligators at the DAR meeting. THAT was a true story?! Truth is truly stranger than fiction!
This book would be suitable for anyone, from teens to adults. This book has strong female characters who are courageous and intelligent. This series would make an excellent gift. I have recommended the first book to several of my friends.
I have enjoyed two of the Kopp Sisters books and intend to read the others. They are based or a real person and take place in New Jersey at the turn of the century, before women had the vote. They are lively and very entertaining. The title of the first one is “Girl Waits with Gun”. Author is Amy Stewart.

What do Amy Stewart and Clive Cussler have in common? Great storytelling and impeccable historical research! As a mystery I really enjoyed it, as law enforcement history it is excellent well done, and as a window into the lives of women a hundred years ago it is an education for the uneducated. I totally enjoyed it!
Christina Moore does a great job as narrator, and really adds positive things to the story!
I enjoyed reading this book as I was captivated by the time period and it’s characters. The lady cop and her strong personality gave me a vivid picture of women of the time period.
Sequel never as good as the first book!
This is a story taken from the experiences of a real lady cop in the 1920’s. I enjoyed it and found it quite informative and interesting
It is a good story and mystery and the setting is intriguing.
A fun sequel to the first Kopp Sisters book. The factual basis in a place I once lived made it even more enjoyable.
Enjoyable read. I was often frustrated by the way the women had been raised, but some of that was the time. And definitely the main character overcame expectations of a woman of her time.
Rambled off on tangents frequently….wait, what are we talking about now??
Interesting story line based on a true tale. Writing is a little awkward; would benefit from better editing.
Well researched story based on the lives of real characters in the early 20th century.
I loved reading how women broke into law enforcement. I love the Kopp sisters. The book brings the time period to life.
Miss Constance Kopp and sisters are a delightful discovery. The second book in the series is just as enjoyable as Girl Waits With Gun. Satisfying historical information and source material follow the lively fictionalized adventures.
Just an ok read
I didn’t finish this book because I never developed any interest in the characters. It didn’t hold my attention at all.
The book was interesting but a little on the dry side. However, there were some quite thoughtful reflections and human insights sprinkled throughout. Just not quite enough character development for me.
