I love a good story about a woman who knows what she wants and stops at nothing to get it! You’ll love this fun, steamy, powerful story!
Even though this book is #4 in the series it can be read as a stand alone book. I loved this book & that the theme is so different from most historical romance novels. I really liked Penelope especially since she had made the choice to be a spinster. But when she witnesses childbirth she changed her mind about children & decided she wanted a baby. It was fun reading about how she was trying to get Hugh’s attention, since he was close by. This was another winner by a fabulous author.
Every story I read by this author has totally charmed me with her wonderful plots, unforgettable and believable characters, charming dialogues and emotions that always warm my heart! Did I say Amazing? Yes that is Annabelle Anders. Each book becomes my favorite until the next comes out.
“A miracle. It had taken a miracle to change Penelope Cross’s mind about spinsterhood, but her mind had changed, nonetheless.” This after Pen had witnessed the birth of her wonderful friend’s baby. Now she wants a baby and goes about trying to make that happen! To say she is determined and works fast does not even describe it! Her sights set on Hugh, Viscount Danbury, who she had known for years and was handsome, intelligent and nearby!
With a seductive dress showing off her assets, a little flirtation and a lot of alcohol, she basically took advantage of him! But the problem is he passes ot and does not remember their encounter! Plus he leaves the next morning before she can speak to him.
Talk about an unexpected adventure! As Pen takes off to find Hugh and I turned the pages, I could not help but laugh, and yes out loud, become almost tearful at times and want to shake them to realize they were perfect for each other!!
Did I say I adored this book? It seriously touched my heart and think it is my favorite book by ths author. I reread the last several pages three times. I know I will be thinking about Hugh and Penelope for awhile and anxioiusly awaiting to read more by one of my favorite authors of Historical Romance!!
This is the first book that I have read of the series. It is actually the fourth book in the series, but I didn’t feel like I missed anything by not reading the previous books first. Although I am now adding them to my TBR list! I loved Pen and Hugh’s story! The book was well written, easy to read (hard to put down), and full of emotions. It had a great plot and story line. I can’t wait to read the first book in the series and will definitely have to reread this one as I go through the series. This is a must read series!
This was an unusual premise for a regency romance. I love Penelope, she is a bad a** for sure. She’s unsinkable in a lot of ways, she has a brilliant mind, thinks outside of the box and makes zero apologies for her brilliance. She thrives in being an independent woman who snubbs the idea of a conventional marriage. Giddy with joy after an amazing event she witnessed, Penelope follows her impulses and does something that’s irresponsible, and then spends the next few months trying to overcome the ton’s socital traditions to inform Hugh of what she’s done. Because Penelope has let things go, ahe bears the burden of rumors, accusations and assumptions. But, at the end of this Penelope is triumphant, she is the very definition of resilient, confident and super smart. I really love that Hugh tries, but he’s such a man, but a man with a good heart even if he is trying to erect walls.
Take a deep breath and be ready for a rollercoaster of emotions. Mss Anders has the perfect way to write so much emotion into a lovely read. She also knows how to tackle delicate situations. This book had be laugh out loud and cry. This is one of those books you just can’t read fast enough but am really sad when it was finished. You could relate to both the hero and the heroine but I did get annoyed with the hero on more than one occasion. I loved this book even though there was a fair bit of sex, which this reviewer always skips, it didn’t affect my enjoyment of the book. I received this book as an ARC and was more than happy to do a review.
Annabelle always surprises me by taking a rarely seen topic in HR and turning it into an amazing story! I had an idea of what was going to happen, but as soon as Penelope said “we should celebrate” I was shocked at how wrong I was. But it was a good shock. Then the surprises just kept coming with them and every time I thought he was going to find out I wanted to scream because they were interrupted. My heart ached when he finally found out and then sunk with his reaction.
These two clearly are meant to be together and both are stubborn and full of passion. I was jumping up and down when he finally remembered and then my heart sunk when he arrived home to what he did. Everything in that scene had my heart racing, holding my breath, and tears in my eyes all for good and bad reasons. Major book hangover after the amazing ending.
Penelope is a determined woman that always gets what she wants when she sets her mind to it. I loved how she could walk in and fix things like it was nothing. She just couldn’t fix this as easily and her emotions leap off the pages at every turn. If only she could get him to listen and give details
Hugh knew something changed when he saw that baby. his emotions when came to her were so clear. I wanted to shake him to make him remember everything. When he ordered the doctor out I could feel the pain in his voice. What he did next shocked me and melted my heart to his stubbornness and the way he acted.
There is a picnic scene that has something I have never seen in HR, but it was very well done and takes it to a 3 1/2 kisses on the spice level. But it was very well done.
The birth scene is a bit traumatic so it may be triggering to some, but it is very well done.

Lady at Last -Lord Love a Lady
book 4
by Annabelle Anders
WOW! Every time I read an Annabelle Anders book I always feel this one tops the previous one! This was absolutely AMAZING!!
Self proclaimed spinster Penelope Crone wants what every woman has the right to experience……motherhood! Now she only needs an accomplice to help with the deed. Who better than Hugh Chesterton, she knows him and his quirks, he’s honourable and passably good looking, what she didn’t expect was how her seduction to unfold.
Hugh Chesterton is not the marrying kind he’s a confirmed bachelor, until Penelope Cross starts a game of seduction with him. He has a vague recollection of kissing Pen his body shows all the signs that more than just kissing happened. His mind is foggy and he’s not quite certain if she’s been compromised by him. What ensues is Pen chasing the man she’s fallen head over heels all over England to convince him that they were meant to be together!
I loved Pen and Hugh, enjoyed their witty dialogue and journey in falling in love. Annabelle Anders seriously has a gift for writing amazing characters and intricate plots that just pull the reader in for an enjoyable read. I highly recommend her books, you won’t be disappointed.
I recieved a complimentary copy from the author. This is my honest unbiased opinion.
This is the first book that I have read from this author. I can tell you is was AMAZING! I can’t wait to read the other books in this series. You will cry, laugh, and scream with frustration and in the end you will smiles with joy and happiness. I totally recommend this book. I could not put the book down I needed to finish it so I could found out how it ended. You feel like you are living right along with characters.
Annabelle Anders fourth book in the Lord Love A Lady series, Lady At Last, will be available April 30th.
The author assures us that there are more characters for this series that need a happily ever after. I’ll be waiting.
Miss Penelope Cross, spinster by choice, has just witnessed a miracle. Her friend has given birth and now all Pen can think about is having a baby of her own. She’s scared off ton gentlemen for the past ten years, who’s left to marry? She picks Hugh Chesterton, Viscount Danbury. Hugh is a friend but a confirmed bachelor so he’s gonna be tricky to convince and drag to the alter. There’s an “incident” in a Dukes study that Hugh can’t quite remember and Pen can’t forget. Pen must chase, all over England, after Hugh to prevent a social disaster. Each wants a love marriage but will that be possible now?
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Thank you to the author for this opportunity.

After witnessing the miracle of birth of Michael & Lilly’s son, twenty eight year old Miss Penelope Crone is having second thoughts about swearing off marriage. She wants – no, she needs – to experience the blessed event herself. Hugh Chesterton, Viscount Danbury, is relatively intelligent, good looking, unmarried, and most importantly, close at hand. With a little décolletage, a sway of the hips, and a few drinks, Penelope is certain she can extract a respectable offer but unchecked lust takes over, leaving Penelope in a most precarious predicament. I just love the author’s books so much so that I need to give myself a completely uninterrupted few hours as I know I won’t want to put it down. Also no starting one of her books late at night, done that & not slept until I finished!. This book once again drew me in from the first page. Penelope entering the study to seek out a drunk Hugh was priceless & had me laughing out loud but then further into the book I shed tears – both sad & happy ones & by the time I was finished I was streaming. Very well portrayed characters & a story that flows so well that the hours flew by. I love it when characters from earlier books make appearances & it was great to see that their lives were still happy. I loved Pen & Hugh but wanted to shake them both at times but if they’d really talked at the beginning there wouldn’t have been this brilliant read
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
Starring Hugh Chesterton, Viscount Danbury and Miss Penelope Crone. Characters with established history.
Okay… I am not gonna lie. I was a little ticked off at Penelope at first, because of the way she went about getting a baby… although I don’t think she intended in taking it as far as she did. Her plan is in the category of, “it seemed like a good idea at the time”. But she was definitely a feisty, tenacious, go-getter type of heroine. In the end I was cheering for her… like, really, really loudly!!
Oh my dear Hugh… I just wanted to give him a hug. So many things were thrown at him at once. Totally understood his frustration and his angst throughout the book. He was a deliciously honorable hero… even though he had every right to be angry and distrustful towards Penelope, his concern for her always rose to the top. The best kind of hero!! Totally le sigh!!
Penelope and Hugh had a lot of things to weed out in their relationship before they reached their HEA. I loved that they were friends first. That gave them a strong foundation to stand on when things got really rocky for them. They were also a hot and passionate couple who were totally beautiful together. I was so happy when they finally worked things out, because these two definitely belong together.
Annabelle Anders did it again… she sucker-punched me in the heart with all the feels. After Hugh’s revelation, forget it… I was an ugly crying mess until “The End”. I absolutely la-La-LOVED this book. This is soooo going on my “All Time Fave Annabelle Anders Books” List. So, good job, Annabelle Anders!! This story is one of the reasons why you are on my Keeper Shelf and an “auto-buy author” for me. You create story masterpieces that I happily gobble up!! Thank you!!
*By the way I read LADY BE GOOD before this book and so glad that Rose (Penelope ‘s maid and BFF) got her own story. She was so funny in this… a wonderful, cheeky comic relief.
This is book 4 in the Lord Love a Lady series.
My star rating: 5 stars
Ugly cried AF. Major book hangover. Characters and storyline were amazing. Made me wanna hug the author for writing a book that gave me all the feels!! Will be re-reading this story over and over and over again!!
Another fabulous read from Annabelle Anders! Don’t miss this one.
It only takes once
After her friend gives birth, Penelope decides she wants a child, too. Taking advantage of a drunken Hugh, Penelope gets pregnant, but the evasive Hugh keeps disappearing before she can tell him of her delicate condition. Poor Hugh, he doesn’t remember when it happened. It’s hard to build a marriage on trust. A whirlwind adventure of running after Hugh.
I preordered this book because of the blurb, and was wondering how a seduction scene can lead to a high speed chase across the country.
And what a race it was!
Both characters are awesome, they are who they are, not comprising and clear about what they expect from life until everything is turned upside down.
Sure they are flawed too and make mistakes, and they stubbornness at time could have upset me but it fitted in the story and the ending was beautiful it redeemed their errors.
Penelope is such a clever woman, once she has a goal she does not veer from it, she is also true to herself and would never use the others for her own gain.
Except this one time, and now she is close to pay the price if she can’t catch her stubborn and evasive friend and convince him.
Hugh has navigate the marriage mart his whole adult life, and never someone has caught his eyes, he had some preconceived ideas about his ideal wife but as time pass, he might alter them but it was sure Penelope Crone does not fit the bill, does she? Since for some time, she seems to cross his path very often and something in her has moved.
It was a funny, heartbreaking and very well crafted story, how circumstances bring them together to drive them apart right after and their near impossibility to discuss the most import of all the subjects before it is too late and how they manage once Penelope’s pregnancy revealed was seamless done.
Too Silly
I had to force myself to finish this book. The story and the characters were just too silly.
Content 411: This book contains swearing and sex.
Miss Penelope Crone and Hugh Chesterton, Viscount Danbury are friends that have made it clear throughout their friendship that marriage was not for them. That is until Penelope witnesses a birth and her ovaries take over all rationale thoughts.
That night after Hugh was “deep into his cups” Penelope seduced him in their friends’ home as she needs to have a child of her own. She would work out the rest of the details later. As magical as that night was for her, Hugh cannot remember a single detail.
Now insert all the time they both waste traveling to and fro London and the country side – Penelope needing to tell Hugh of the truth… and Hugh running from the truth. I did feel that this did drag on longer than it should.
I had a hard time connecting with both Penelope and Hugh, but did enjoy the story. They both seemed like the perfect pair and glad they both finally came to their senses! The writing and pacing of the story are both good and it kept my interest throughout.
This is a story that is an original to me. It was a very touching story and I won’t give the plot away but it does all turn out fine! Don’t forget to download the free epilogue from the author. I’m ready to read the next in the series!
Sweet Historical read of friends to lovers, Penelope and Hugh are perfect for each other they just took the long road in figuring that out
After witnessing the miracle of birth, self-determined spinster Penelope Crone is having second thoughts about swearing off marriage. She wants, no needs, to experience the blessed event herself. She is practically 30, and time is running out. Hugh Chesterton, Viscount Danbury, is relatively intelligent, good looking, unmarried, and most importantly close at hand. With a little décolletage, a sway of the hips, and a few drinks of brandy, Penelope is certain she can extract a respectable offer. Unchecked lust takes over, leaving Penelope in a most precarious predicament. Lord Danbury is proving far less attainable than she imagined. – I loved Penelope’s independence and intelligence. Hugh appreciates that also, and he is a good catch. Their conversations are interesting, and I enjoyed their friendship. Circumstances get in the way of a smooth transition. This is a good book but frustrating.
