Kinsey’s skills are about to be sorely tested. She is about to meet her duplicitous match in a couple of world-class prevaricators who quite literally take her for the ride of her life.“L” Is for Lawless Call it Kinsey Millhone in bad company. Call it a mystery without a murder, a treasure hunt without a map, a quest novel with truly mixed-up motives. Call it the return of Kinsey as bad girl– … as bad girl– quick-witted and quicksilvery, smart-mouthed and smart-alecky– poking her nose into everyone’s dirty laundry as she joins up with a modern-day Bonnie and Clyde in an Our Gang comedy that will take her halfway across the country and leave her with a major headache and an empty bank balance.
America’s favorite borderline delinquent is back with her one-liners on tap and her energy level on high, romping through her fastest and funniest adventure in this, her twelfth foray into the alphabet of crime.

Kinsey is taking a rare week off from her PI business for William and Rosie’s wedding, but before she can get too relaxed, Henry asks her for a small favor. One of their neighbors has recently passed, and his family is having a hard time getting the death benefits from the government since they have no record of this man having been in the service during World War II. Kinsey doesn’t intend to get too involved, but when the man’s place is broken into and searched, she becomes curious. Just what is really happening?
I love it when a book takes off in ways I don’t expect, and that’s just what happened with this one. The plot was great, and even when we have most of the answers, there is still the question of what will happen next to Kinsey to keep the pages turning. It is fun to meet the rest of William and Henry’s family, and the character involved in the mystery are as strong as always. A series thread introduced a couple of books back comes into play here again as well. Fans of the series who have missed this one won’t be disappointed.
I love the Alphabet murders – a new twist every book..
I’ve read every single one of this series. Loved all of them!
Loved her books, read them all. The characters become old friends!
I love all of Sue Grafton’s books
Love this series
Funny! Suspenseful-as are all of these sue grafton ones -consistent with characters
Great series!
If you want to read a great book, pick up one of Sue Grafton‘s! Especially the alphabet series! Highly, highly recommended!
A little dated now, perhaps but still interesting
I love Sue Grafton’s novel and this Kinsey Milhone adventure is no exception.
Sue Grafton was an incredible writer!
I love all of her books
This one was much better than the book that came before it. The pace of the story moved. The plot was different. The characters were…interesting. Not necessarily likable but definitely interesting. I am left wondering about a phone call that was made just before the epilogue, but at least the story itself got resolved in a way that was acceptable.
Always good.
Grafton books don’t disappoint.
4 out of 5 stars for L is for Lawless, the 12th book in the “Kinsey Millhone” cozy mystery series written by Sue Grafton in 1994. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, as it covered a lot with Henry, Kinsey’s landlord and friend. He asks for her help to find the military records proving a good friend of his was in the service, in order to properly bury him. But this is where it takes a turn… Kinsey goes dark… well sort of… she’s on a trip around the country to find the answers, stuck side by side with some ruthless characters whom she has to pretend to like. Less about murder more about mystery and past background checks, your mind works overtime to try to solve this one. It’s complex but soft at the same time. Kinsey’s personality makes these books…. you always root for her. In this one, she has to take more risks than usual, but it thankfully pays off. A must-read in this series, but there are a lot of those!
I love her style. I’m sorry there will be no Z!
Another great book. I don’t get tired of the story lines.
I love ALL of Sue Grafton books. It makes you wish there were more letters in the alphabet
