The day starts like any other in L.A. The sun burns hot as the Santa Ana winds blow ash from mountain fires to coat the glittering city. But for private investigator Joe Pike, the city will never be the same again. His ex-lover, Karen Garcia, is dead, brutally murdered with a gun shot to the head. Now Karen’s powerful father calls on Pike (a former cop) and his partner, Elvis Cole, to keep an eye … keep an eye on the LAPD as they search for his daughter’s killer — because in the luminous City of Angels, everyone has secrets, and even the mighty blue have something to hide. But what starts as a little procedural hand-holding turns into a deadly game of cat-and-mouse. For a dark web of conspiracy threatens to destroy Pike and Cole’s twelve-year friendship — if not their lives. And L.A. just might be singing their dirge.

Terrific entertainment . . . A powerful portrait of Los Angeles in our time: swift, colorful, gripping, a real knockout.
Loved it! couldn”t put it down
Hard to put down. Fast paced and easy to read. Interesting characters. A good read.
Crais gets better with every book.
This should be a movie! It is packed with violence and humor, making the reader get lost in the adventure and want more of these great main characters, Cole and Pike. It has a feel like some great action films, such as Lethal Weapon. You may even cheer while reading this one! I won’t spoil the plot or the ending for you, but you will not be left …
Robert Crais never fails to entertain & is one of my favorite writers. His characters are so believable and interesting, i wish I could meet them! The plot is well thought out and full of unexpected twists.
A good plot with lots of action, intrigue involving internal power struggles within the police department, and illuminating back-story on Joe Pike.
Another excellent adventure by Robert Crais.
Exciting. I like that best friends, Joe Pike and Elvis Cole. take care of each other!
I enjoyed this book very much. Well written and hard to put down.
I love Elvis Cole
Geez, yet another author discovered on BookBub! I loved the story, the characters, the plot – the whole book. So much so that, as with other discoveries here, I went back and started at the beginning of the Elvis Cole/Joe Pike series. A combination of Michael Connelly detective and Nelson DeMille humor, I highly recommend the book and series.
Loved hit. Always enjoy Crais books. Love Elvis and Joe.
Robert Crais and Lee Child, the 2 best around. Love love love each book by Robert Crais.
I don’t recommend this book. Characters are not wonderful or realistic. I don’t plan on reading anything else by the author.
I love Robert Crais’s books, and this one of the best.
Really good character development
Formulaic in many ways, but with original characters set in a realistic portrayal of big city copdom. I could see the Hollywood movie of the book while I read it. Loads of fun!
Robert Crais’s depiction of Los Angeles is a two-sided coin. One is beautiful and alluring, the other gritty and a little frightening. As a life-long resident of the area, I can attest to the fact that both sides exist. His books, this one in particular, show LA as it really is. This book gives in depth insight into one of the two main …
It was what I come expect from an Elvis Cole/Joe Pike story – a good, detective story with some Elvis Cole humor thrown in. And thank you for giving us some insight into what make Joe Pike tick.
