A scientist racing against death, a commoner trying to save his city, an aristocratic villain more concerned with money than lives and a sea monster – how does Anne Renwick manage to put so much into a short story?
I received a copy of this from the author and I am voluntarily leaving a review.
UPDATE: This was my second “read” of KRAKEN AND CANALS, this time listening to the audio version wonderfully narrated by Anais Inara Chase. I look forward to revisiting the titles of this fun series through the audios which allow me to commute and/or finish chores while I listen. As a scuba diver, KRAKEN AND CANALS is a particularly favorite as it ventures into the underwater world I love. Highly Recommended!
EARLIER POST ~
I am absolutely Delighted with the Elemental Steampunk series by Anne Renwick. She is a new-to-me author that has quickly become one of my top favorite writers. I love! the eye-catching covers on this series and again, the cover artwork on Kraken and Canals caught my attention and the writing continued to pull me in. The non-stop action and creativity in Kraken and Canals, a short story, did Not disappoint.
Venice – 1885. The main characters are entirely unique – Arturo Piatti, 45 and fit, a navy man and expert diver experienced in dealing with the present giant canal kraken situation, and Dr Judith Ravensdale, a leading crypto biologists studying cures for cancer. Kraken and Canals is a short 2nd Chances story in which after many years of separation Arturo and Judith must redevelop trust if they hope to rediscover love. Krakens and Canals reeks of corruption and treachery, is packed with adventure (dirigibles, attacking monster river kraken, collapsing buildings) and manages to remain light and very action-packed. Fabulous!
I highly recommend Kraken and Canals, a short 2nd Chances story in Anne Renwick’s Elemental Steampunk series to readers of Steampunk, action/adventure novels and mysteries, fast moving angst-free historical romances, novels involving science and/or intrigue (spy novels), and those who enjoy intelligent, capable characters who willingly pool their resources for a common good in a Proximity/Danger trope setting with a light touch and a HEA. You will Not be disappointed!
I look forward to reading the next title in the series – #6/A Trace of Copper, a Tale. Renwick’s website has the recommended complete reading order – #1/Tin Rose/a short story, #2/Golden Spider, a full length title, and #3/Rust and Steam, a short story begin the series. Each title is a delightful standalone but an overall story arc connects them.
READER CAUTIONS
Violence – Similar to a G/PG rated adventure movie.
Profanity – None.
Sexual situations – No. No on-scene intimacy present. At the close of the book, a fade-out scene concludes the story.
Fun, creepy, and romantic!
Audiobook version: 5 stars overall, 5 stars story, 5 stars narration
I highly recommend this exciting steampunk romance that can be read as a standalone. It is great for listening before Halloween and anytime because it has a harrowing and creepy scene of diving with sea monsters! I love the short, low-steam, second-chance romance of a couple in their 40s. Anne Renwick really packs a lot of bang for your buck in this 1.25-hour audiobook that also has excellent narration. I also love the setting of an alternate Venice during the mid-19th century that has been infested with kraken in the canals.
