This book is everything historical romance should be, and it honestly needs its own movie. The romance between Margaret and Colin is both transactional and fiery.
Having been recalled to the Crusades on the same night his wife dies in childbirth, Colin is forced to find a mother for his newborn and turns to his King for help. Having spent too much time away from court to know which women are available, and having neither the time nor the interest in courting or new love, he entrusts the choice of a new wife to his King, and they’re both rushed into a marriage that neither is ready for.
Colin spends a decent amount of time in the story struggling with the fact that he hasn’t had time to mourn the loss of his wife, and feels that his physical attraction to his new wife is a form of betrayal. Margaret attempts to deal with a husband who isn’t yet emotionally available for a new romance, the unexpected role of mother to a newborn, and the business of preparing to manage their lands alone once she learns that Colin will have to depart again for Rome.
The romance is slow and steady, and steamy once it gets going. Ultimately, their separation is the most jarring part, as it should be. I loved the way this story was told, and how much historical accuracy went into it. Black Colin of Rome is a legendary figure, and the Knights Hospitaller were a real order during the time, and I was just thrilled to see this all told through the eyes of someone I already enjoy reading romance from. Brilliant work on this one, Amy.
I like the history is woven In To the plot. It was suspense and intrigue from beginning to end. I like the strong female characters who were always trying snd succeeding in a lot of the story to make better pives for themselves-not yo overpower the men but to show the men that women had character and a punk. Love it.
From The Highlands To Rome
This book had everything a Highland novel should have, and more! Full of history, Highland clan intrigue and even brave knights fighting holy wars. This novel was full of action, drama and steamy romance. A must read!
EPIC MUST READ!! I LOVED this story!!! I truly could not put it down!! It is full-bodied with every emotion and steamy passion!! Such wonderful characters that are written about with great wit! Well done indeed!!
This is not your traditional love story. Colin and Margaret are wed only a month after Colin’s wife died in childbirth. King James II chose a bride for Colin and he met Margaret at the altar. The first couple of months were rocky because Colin was still in mourning for Jonet, and he thought of Margaret only as a mother for his son. Just when Colin and Margaret have started loving one another, Colin is forced to leave on his third crusade. Margaret is strong and smart, so she focuses on getting Colin’s castle built, but she’s also a passionate woman. This book focuses on characters rather than spending a lot of time on historical background. That made the book especially enjoyable for me.
This book had so many ups and downs I was kept inside this book from cover to cover. Colin is a hard man. He had to be with the fighting he was asked to do. He buried two wives and needed to marry for his baby son. Margaret is young but knows what she is capable of accomplishing. She has a fight but she gets Colin and a great life. Then he is called away for many years. She holds out for him all the time he is gone holding onto their two sons. She is tangled in another mans greed but she gets her HEA in the end.
Love all of the books by this author!!!
I don’t very often read books twice, but this one I have read three times
Love is awesome and patience
Author is my current favorite. Loved this book
What a book! I released a deep sigh when I finished reading this one. I felt like Lady Margaret throughout the story. This story is about a Knight named Colin Campbell. He’s led many men into battle and has made quite the name for himself. However he has suffered a great deal of loss during his life. His first wife passed from illness while most recently, his second wife passed during child birth. Needing a mother for his newborn son, he writes a letter to the King requesting someone. Enter Margaret Robinson. Margaret was this talented, opinionated young woman with a heart of gold. She helped her father run his estate which seemed uncommon for this time period. She loved playing the lute, singing, and dancing. What I loved most about Margaret was her willingness to help others. She didn’t mind getting her hands dirty and would do anything to help another.
Like with most arranged marriages, theirs started out pretty rocky. Colin was needed back at war so their time was limited in the beginning. However their relationship blossomed in such a short amount of time. I’ll leave you to discover that on your own.
When Colin ultimately had to leave to go fight the battles raging across the land, my heart felt for Margaret. I felt as if it was my husband going off to war. During this time, it was rough. Not only for the characters but for the reader as well. I kept wanting the story to fast forward but ultimately the author wanted us to feel that longing alongside Margaret. And boy did I!
Overall, I loved this story. It did feel a bit long at times but I’m thoroughly pleased with this story. I definitely want to continue on with the series. I can’t wait to see what comes next.
Despite the time that passes by in this story, it kept me listening. Dave Gillies was again a great narrator. His change in voice for each character gave the story a personality. This is another great story by Amy Jarecki. Margaret and Colin suffered a lot in this book, but the homecoming was a tear-jerker and made my heart ache for them. Margaret was a very independent and smart woman, and managed to keep her life together. Once Colin got to know Margaret, he was more kind and considerate. Their love prevailed in the end, for which I am glad. This is a story that I highly recommend.
I received an audiobook as a gift, and this is my unsolicited review.

I loved the Characters and the historical story line. It’s a book I will enjoy reading again. Margret is the ultimate heroine and every warrior’s dream, if he’s not too prideful to truly let her prove herself. She is an example of an extraordinary woman who is kind, fiercely loyal, and hard working. Margret finds herself offered to marry the fierce Black Knight, who has lost two wives and his first child in childbirth. Grieving for a second wife, Colin quickly needs to find a mother for his new son before he goes back for a third tour of the Crusades. Colin has vowed to never open his heart again to a woman, but is this fierce warrior strong enough to guard his heart?
