Declan and Mak have been at each other’s throats since sophomore year and now it’s time for the party to end all parties for the seniors of Rittenhouse Prep. What’s the worst that could happen?Long live the Kings…
Kings of Rittenhouse – A Shameless Kings Prequel is book .5 in the Kings of Rittenhouse series by Maya Hughes.
In this short little introduction to this series we meet the boys of the Rittenhouse Kings, the championship ice hockey team of Rittenhouse Prep School. It is told in the alternating point of views of Declan McAvoy and Makenna Halstead who are both featured in book one, Shameless King. We get a look into both of their lives and there is a short excerpt at the end of the book. These two do not get along at all and their story is an enemies to lovers story. Even at this young age, I can feel the underlying attraction between them!
We also get a good look at Emmett and Avery who are featured in book three, Ruthless King. They are high school sweethearts. Emmett sees their relationship as forever but it seems as though Avery has other ideas. Their story has a sad ending in this novella so in Ruthless King, they will get their second chance.
This was a perfect way to be introduced to these guys and definitely left me wanting to get to know them each better in their individual stories. This series is definitely one I plan to continue with. I can’t wait to better get to know the Kings of Rittenhouse!

Ms. Hughes sets the stage very well for her upcoming novel(s). The setting starts when all the characters are in high school. This is a well written and well depicted tale, so much so, that it attains its goal of whetting the reader’s appetite for more. With such depth to all characters, it is easy to see the possibility that more novels could unfold from this prequel. I am new to the writings of Ms. Hughes and I am really impressed thus far. With baited breath this reader awaits the first novel.
I received an advance review copy of this prequel and I am leaving an honest review.

High School, the best time of your life, or is it just the beginning? For the Rittenhouse Kings it is the beginning of their stories. A tiny glimpse into the lives of who the Kings are and where they are headed next. It was also a glimpse at the troupes that Maya has in store down the road for each King as they head into the future to find their Queen.
The Kings of Rittenhouse is a prequel novella, showcasing the last time seniors; Declan, Emmett, Heath, Ford, Colm are all together in preparatory school. Cleverly done, it opens with an assembly where the principal announces each senior and their school voted accomplishments (aka, Best Bromance, etc..). As the book progresses, you meet the infamous Ice Queen, Makenna “Mak” who is the center heroine in the first book, but for now she has to interview the Kings for the upcoming yearbook.
All in all, it was a great appetizer to the series, and left me hungry to read more.

Kings of Rittenhouse is just a short prequel or intro to the wonderful characters in this series. By way of senior prom and an end of year party, we get some insight into Mak and Declan’s feelings toward each other as well as a few tidbits about some of the other characters. We get a little bit of Mak and little of Declan as the chapters alternate between the two, and from their points of view, we also learn a little about their friends and classmates. One thing’s for sure, from what we’re told in this quick read, this series certainly won’t be boring.

This prequel introduces us to the Kings of Rittenhouse, especially Declan and Makenna. It definitely whet my appetite for more and I can’t wait to read the full-size novels for these characters. Just when you think you have a handle on it all, Senior year ends in a bang that decimates everything around you!
I am excited to see these two pick up theenemies to lovers romance that is destined to happen…Its written in the stars.
I’m devastated for Emmett and hope that that particular shrapnel won’t ruin everything he has going for him…
I guess I’ll see. I’m about to dive into the rest of the kings!

Is there anything quite like going back to where it all began? Nope, not at all!
It’s no secret I’m a huge fan of the Kings of Rittenhouse series – each book has told a unique story that make my heart squeeze. I’ve fallen hard for each and every character and revisit them often. There is something so supremely special about going back and seeing so many of my favorite characters before each of their books.
It creates a deeper appreciation for how they change and grow, and for the circumstances that make them the way they are when we first meet them. It’s not required to enjoy the rest of the books, but why wouldn’t you? It’s even more of some amazing characters in this world and adds an extra layer of depth to the stories that follow!

This is a prequel to a new series that features five high school hockey players who have won four consecutive championships and are preparing to head to college and ultimately the NHL. This story focuses on Declan whose main concern is playing in the NHL and Mak the serious student who wants to ensure that she does well in Stanford where she will be studying to become a doctor. They are complete opposites but that doesn’t detract from the attraction they feel for each other.
The performance of the narrators draw you in and do a great job of bringing the story to life.

So this is a *FREE* cute little Novella to introduce Rittenhouse Kings series. It was an interesting way to meet the key MCs of the series. While the Novella is YA (End of Senior year of high school), the series itself is NA and is set during their college years.
My only complaint is that, timeline-wise, it occurs after the Prequel but before the main content of the first book, “Shameless King”. The novella refers to things that happen in the prequel and it’s a tiny bit spoiler-ish.
Unless there’s a strong need for “flashback” ~ I tend to prefer to read things chronologically so it kind of felt off for that reason.

So much drama! I loved this so much! I loved getting to know the guys on the hockey team, as well as all the others. I have a feeling this is going to be a great series. It reminded me of gossip girl and the royals series. There’s a ton of characters and they each have their own storylines going. I was interested in every single one. I can’t wait to see where this series takes us.

This was a quick read novella introducing us to the Rittenhouse Kings, the ice hockey team. Declan, Heath, Emmett, Ford and Colm are the top five players we’re given a backstory to in order to set the stage for future books. We’re also introduced to Makenna, who’s top in the class. Everyone refers to her as ‘The Ice Queen’ and Declan swears she sucks the fun out of everything because she’s so serious. Declan and Makenna share their POVs in giving us the backstory to these characters. In doing so, Maya Hughes has made them come to life leaving me wanting to know more.
