A deliciously twisted romance from Amber Bardan, HEA guaranteed! Julius King: Powerful. Wealthy. Dangerous. For three years, he’s been my captor on a private island. Despite his fearsome reputation, he’s been almost careful with me. He’s never laid a hand on me–and despite myself, I desperately want him to. I’m drawn to him, irresistibly and totally. But after three years together, I don’t … together, I don’t know him at all. He’s hiding something. Something bigger than both of us, that stretches back to the fateful, bloody day we met. I made a promise to him then, and the clock is almost up. Before I run out of time, I have to find out the truth: Who is Julius King?

Woman held captive on an island by a powerful criminal. I mean, that’s my jam. I do like my dysfunction and power imbalance–and for once it worked for me with a dominant man. Probably helped that our female lead had some tricks up her sleeve, and that there were a number of secrets swirling tumultuously in the background.
I think the twist could have been foreshadowed much more and it would have been a more satisfying payoff, but it was still an interesting twist. A little too much sex for me ;( but I still liked the dynamics of the relationship, and the plot once it got going.
And I love a couple that fights for some reason. So much anger-fueled chemistry, you know?
This book is so well crafted. You are given bits and pieces from the main characters. Sarah, the young woman kept on private secluded island by Julius, a wealthy, heartless criminal dole out information to keep you suspecting what and why things have happened and anticpate what is going happen next. There are twists, turns and a shock or two that you don’t expect. It is a book that you need to stay with in order to truly appreciate it. I totally recommend this book.
It was filled with steam and intrigue and steam and twists and turns I was not expecting. Also did I mention the steam? Haha! Read it – you won’t be sorry!
I knew going in that this had a pretty wicked twist to it and I love twisty stories. Unfortunately, I had this figured out pretty quickly. Some of the finer details I wasn’t aware of, but the big twist wasn’t a surprise to me. Perhaps knowing it was going to be there had me looking at everything from different angles, but how and why I figured it out doesn’t matter. The fact that I did stole whatever enjoyment I might have had.
While I never really hated Julius, and I love an anti-hero and was prepared to fall for him, I never felt connected to him. I can’t deny that in the end his love and desire for her was all that drove him and that’s something that I adored. Despite having Sarah’s point of view for most of the book, I was never a fan of her either. Her character never had a chance to solidify enough for me to know the real her.
The writing started out with a rhythm that I enjoyed but there were so many times that I just got frustrated with the constant rolling prose rather than the deep unearthing of character development and plotline I craved. This book has been highly recommended by several book friends and groups so I was ready to gobble it up and love it. Sadly, it just didn’t work for me. However, if you like a hostage romance with some twists, a hero that will do anything for the heroine, you might enjoy this one.
Mostly heroine POV with a few from the hero
