NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • MacKayla Lane faces the ultimate threat when war breaks out between the kingdoms of shadow and light, as the Fever series races to an explosive revelation. From the moment MacKayla Lane arrived in Dublin to hunt her sister’s murderer, she’s had to fight one dangerous battle after the next: to survive, to secure power, to keep her city safe, to protect the people she … protect the people she loves.
The matter of who’s good and who’s evil can be decided by the answer to a single question: Whose side are you on?
Now, as High Queen of the Fae, Mac faces her greatest challenge yet: ruling the very race she was born to hunt and kill—a race that wants her dead yesterday, so they can put a pure-blooded Fae queen on the throne.
But challenges with her subjects are the least of her concerns when an ancient, deadly foe resurfaces, changing not only the rules of the game but the very game itself, initiating a catastrophic sequence of events that have devastating consequences and leave Mac questioning everything she’s ever learned and everyone she’s ever loved. Now begins an epic battle between Mortal and Fae, Seelie and Unseelie, would-be kings and would-be queens, with possession of the Unseelie King’s virtually unlimited power and the fate of humanity at stake.
From the exquisite, deadly gardens of the High Queen’s court, to long-forgotten truths found in the Sacred Grove of Creation, from the erotic bed of her enigmatic, powerful lover to the darkest, seductive reaches of the Unseelie kingdom, Mac’s final journey takes her places no human has been before, and only one human could possibly survive . . .
One who’s willing to sacrifice everything.

Well this is the final book in Karen Marie Moning’s Fever series and I have mixed feelings. I’ve loved this series since book one Darkfever came out! and i have read all the books in this series. With fabulous storytelling and characters that I adored and watched evolve its been one hell of a ride all these years! KMM did a awesome job of wrapping things up,but I wanted a couple of more happy endings. Especially bad boy and panty melter and man with a little touch of beastie my man Lor !!!! I wanted some bad ass chic to slap his ass and make him fall head over heels in love! Could you image this sexy love them and leave them manwhore falling in real love!! Guy’s like him always fall hard it just takes the right woman. Their were twists and turns with a couple of surprises and while their wasn’t any hot steamy sex between Jericho barrons and Mac their was a love and combining of two soul’s and that showed that no matter what happens were in this together . Jericho barrons will always be my #1 book boyfriend friend! Not just because he’s a hot sexy beastie, but when a man like him set’s his sights on you its so empowering to know that of all the other women this alpha man picked you to walk at his side and their will never be anyone else. Jericho is everything you’d want in a man and more. I for one would have stepped into Barrons Books & Baubles and never left! Alot has happened since mac became queen of the fae. Also Cruce the seductive and oh! So bad boy royal fae has been building his new kingdom and buying his time waiting to become the new seelie king and he wants Mac to be his queen. Cruce might be a master manipulator and even has a secret weapon but does he have what it takes to win….. I will admit I do so love this guy! He pulled alot of shit over the years and has never shyed away from being the villain of the piece, but theirs just something so mesmerizing about this unrepentant badboy that I love. Moning is a superb writer and some of my all time quotes have been written by her.She knows how to tap into deep emotion the kind that leaves you raw and bleeding and it shows in all her books. Until next time Luv’s
I cannot recommend this book or the entire Fever Series enough. Adore KMM. KOSAL was an absolutely epic conclusion to a series I’ve been reading for 15 years.
Jericho Barrons…. need I say more?
I’ve been here since the beginning and never regretted it, not once. I started with the Highlanders and went to Fever. Loved all these characters and the plot of this book was, just had to go where it went. Loved it! Sorry to see them go. Will have to catch up with Moning’s other stories.
What a bittersweet moment this is. To say goodbye to beloved characters that have mesmerized me for years. That I love and adore and come back to over and over again. It’s kind of heartbreaking actually, it’s over and I don’t want it to be. Mac and Barron’s, Ryodan and Dani, Christian and Kat and all the rest of the gang give it their all as an enemy thought long dead comes back to reap havoc, the Fae are facing an all new problem as the song of making did more than just heal the earth. Some new characters are introduced that enrich the story as well as the old characters. I could not put it down and I just loved every single page. Perfection. Thank you so much to the author for the incredible journey and the tales you wove, they are forever in my heart.
Kingdom of Shadow ans Light is the last book in the Fever serie by Karen Marie Moning.
Mac is now the High Fae Queen and faces even greater danger then when she first came to Dublin to hunt down her sister’s murdurer. Her subjects wants her dead since they wants a pureblood on the throne but its gonna be the least of her worries since an ancient foe is coming and it could have devastating consequences.
I have really love the last book in this series that I have been reading for so many years. Gonna miss Mac and Barron. And also Dani. Looking foward to read what Karen gonna bring us in the future.
I have enjoyed the hell out of this series since 2006. I have loved Barrons, Ryoden, Mac, and I’ve hated many more nasty characters, (sniff) I will miss them all. I love the world this author created, there was never a dull moment or location. My favorite scene was when the “beast” was circling around the tree Mac was in marking. I know weird but for some reason that one sticks out most. Thank you Ms. Moning. I can’t wait to read your next adventure
I reallly enjoyed the series! I’m sorry that it’s over.
Continuation of a great series!
I’m so sorry to see this series end, but KMM did not disappoint. This book is dense and filled with all the wonderful characters and world-building readers have come to expect. I think I’m ready to do a re-read.
I’ve been following this series since 2006 and I can’t believe it’s finally over. I never thought I’d see the day.
It wasn’t perfect but it was closure and finally my favorite characters can have the HEA they fought so hard to get.
I’m a huge Ryo and Dani fan so I missed them terribly in this book. I wish there was more interaction between them and some epic battle where mega could show all her awesomeness.
Mac and Barrons are as always the glue that sticks everything together and I loved their ending . Finally after who knows how long Barrons is at peace with everything around him.
Christian was as always a prince and I really liked Lyryka she is fresh and naive and super cute.
I ended up feeling sorry for Cruce, nothing goes his way ever LOL and after everything I wished he suffered more at the end.
More than the book itself I’m grateful that KMM is writing again after everything that happened to her. She overcame so much and pushed through so she could give us and ending to the fever series. You are our rainbow girl and we see you Karen. Thank you for 15 amazing years of fever.
Writing this review brought me back to when I first started reading KMM’s books. I have loved everything she has put out and was excited to get my hands on this latest and last in-series book.
When I read books now, I find I approach my journey through the story using two sets of eyes: one as a reader, the other that of a published author. I am both.
In the past, when reading one of Karen’s books, I often found that it felt as though I was being given an intimate look into the author’s life, her emotions, her challenges, her happiness, and pain. I felt this once again when reading this last book of hers. As an author myself, I know that we often put pieces of ourselves into our stories—writing what we know, what we feel, and often personal things we have lost. And nothing could be truer with this last book in the Fever series.
When I think back on Karen’s life that she so graciously shared with her fans, the things she has been through, the joy, the losses, and the physical, emotional, and mental challenges she went through while writing her books, not just this last one, I am not surprised that this one felt different to me. Karen is not the same person she was when she started this journey of writing this series, and she is not the same person she was when she began writing this last book. To the reader, we fell in love with the story and the characters, and they became a part of us, but to Karen, they are parts of herself that she gave to us. Writing the last in a series must be a very difficult thing for an author… bittersweet as they say. Saying goodbye to characters, parts of self, while gathering the creativity and strength to start something new, is a huge undertaking in the best of times.
Thank you, Karen, for your wonderful stories, your kindness, your love of your fans, and for sharing your perseverance to push through life’s challenges.
I am forever changed by the words you shared in your stories.
I’m sad to see this series ending… but I can’t wait to see what’s coming!
Thank you Karen, for introducing us to Mac and the rest of the gang. I love getting lost in the fever series, I’m really sad that it’s over but this was a fantastic ending
**Spoiler Alert** I’ve been a fan of KMM’s work since 2003 when Dark Highlander and Kiss of the Highlander was mistakenly returned to the reference desk at my library. I dutifully checked them in at Circulation and checked them right back out and whoa! I was hooked. Actually read Dageus’ and Chloe’s story first, but I got on track soon enough. I was so looking forward to writing this particular review because I was sure it would be nothing less than a 5 star.
I think I just misunderstood where KMM was trying to go with this latest (last?) installment. I adored the chance to catch up with Barrons, Ryodan, Christian and the gang. I found Mac rather tiresome (maybe it was the narrator’s overdone Southern accent). Still, I perked right up when Ryodan came into the story. Not sure it will ever happen, but I would love to see Christian and Lyrica again (maybe he’ll need to save her from something she encounters in the Silvers) or (again-not sure it would happen) head back to the beginning of everything and check in with Dageus and Chloe if she takes the elixir. Hopes and Dreams…
I am very happy with the way it all ended. I was really worried about reading this book, especially after reading and not caring for High Voltage. It started slow but by 50% I was all in and wishing I could stay up 24 hours straight just to read it all. All the little plots that I wanted a resolution for, got one. I was so worried that I would be left with something unanswered, but KMM came through and I am more than happy with the way she ended The Fever Series.
I’m not sure where to begin here. The beginning of the book was confusing and scattered, and I couldn’t figure out if it was because I didn’t do a reread, or something else.
I also noticed an over abundance of large and uncommonly used words, a lot that I actually had to look up. At times it felt like I was reading at a level I had not reached yet, being very well read and having a good grasp on the English language, it’s not easy to do that to me. I know KMM had to delay KOSAL for quite some time due to an illness that resulted in brain damage (and thank goodness she recovered! We love you KMM), and if she used all those uncommon words just because she could, because she fought like hell to get to where she was. I can understand that, but as far as reading, it wasn’t as seamless as it usually is. But, I’m just happy that she is still here to teach me words I either didn’t know or couldn’t remember.
After a while, everything started to make sense in the book, and what a journey it ended up being. By the end everything had a nice little bow. Barron’s and Mac remain some of my all time favorite characters, and end it a great place.
My one issue with this story is what it usually is, Dani. She’s not my favorite and once again her failure to think before she acts rears it’s ugly head. Even though she is an adult now, she still has the tendency to think like a teenager and I just don’t like it. I don’t hate her, but she is not one of my favorite characters. Ryodan could do better. Since he hasn’t, nor would he be willing too, I’m glad they end up in a good place.
I loved Christian’s story here. At BLC 19 KMM said we may never get his story, and I was always hoping we would. Let’s leave it at he does and he doesn’t. There is definitely room for more storytelling where he is left.
Overall this was a great ending to an amazing series. While this is the end of the Fever Series, I truly hope it’s not the end of the Fever World.
Wow! My emotions are in overload. Kingdom of Shadow and Light is such an incredible ending to this absolutely fantastic series!
Mac and Barrons will always hold a special place in my heart. They have the most incredible relationship. I love Barrons’ wisdom and how he helps Mac see things from every angle but allows her to be herself and make her own decisions. They ground each other. Their love is so immense you can feel it in every interaction. It makes my heart soar.
Written with so much heart and passion, you see everything play out before your eyes and feel every emotion of every character we have grown to love in this series. My heart is so full right now. These characters have all evolved so much and it is beautiful to watch them all come into their own.
This series is epic and, while I’m sad to see it end, I couldn’t imagine a more perfect ending. Thank you Karen Moning for your words, your wisdom, your heart, and for bringing all us Moning Maniacs together through this journey. Your love and light shine bright and I’m honored to have been a part of this beautiful journey.
“It’s all about the stardust of which each and every one of us is made. We hold limitless possibility for creation, evolution. Everything is inside of us, and if we bring forth the best of what is within us, it will save us. And if we don’t, it will destroy us.”
A Kingdom of Shadow and Light by Karen Marie Moning is the 11th book in her fantastic Fever series. Upon completion of reading this book, I was thrilled how Moning finished this series, especially how she added on some epilogues. As much as I will miss Mac, Barrons, Dani, Ryoden, etc, I was happy to see the conclusion of this series, which was an exciting and wild ride, as well as being very satisfying.
We pick up after High Voltage left off, as Mac is now the High Queen of the Fae, and faces her enemies daily, as even in her own courts they try to kill her. With Barrons still close by protecting Mac, as well as her friends, she manages to be a step ahead of the enemies, but she learns of a powerful ancient enemy, who everyone thought dead, and chaos is about to put them all in danger. Where does Mac turn; as many of those close to her all of a sudden are missing, including her father, Dani, Kat’s daughter, etc.
What follows is an ultra-exciting, wild, mind bending story, though very early on it was a bit slow, but quickly changes to a nonstop thriller all the way. The stakes are high, as Mac is determined to save humans and the Fae, as well as the Seelie, and the question is still out there as to who will become the next King, with 4 possible candidates. The chapters revolve around mostly Mac, Dani and newcomer Lyryka, with some others along the way. There is a lot of fear, as we see many of our favorites in dangerous situations. Who will live and who will survive?
I will not give spoilers, as it will most definitely ruin things for you, and this is a difficult review to write, since so much happens; especially with so many twists and turns as we race to the climax. A Kingdom of Shadow and Light was a rollercoaster of a wild ride throughout, and ¾ of the book was non-stop and very emotional on so many levels. As I noted earlier, it was wonderful to spend so much time with our favorites, Mac, Barrons, Dani, Ryodan, Shazham, Christian, Kat, just to name a few, as I loved every moment of this series. Thank you Karen Marie Moning for this wonderful closure of the series. If you are a Fever fan, you must read this book, to get the perfect closure to the series.
I’m such a mixed bags of emotions right now to see the final book in the series in my hands the last page read I can barely put into words all that I feel. I first want to thank Karen for 15 wonderful years of the best characters and storylines of the Fever series.
Mac and Barrons, Ryodan and Dani/Jada, Kat and Sean and Rae, the Nine, Cruce and all the new characters in KOSAL. I loved getting to know each of these characters and their exceptional personalities, yet I feel sad the friends I’ve come to know and love are done in this storyline. Hopefully Karen’s new projects will be revisiting these characters very soon, and there is always re-reading my all time favourite series 🙂
You guys, KOSAL is a rollercoaster! I laughed, I cried, I was shocked (chapter 51, I’m looking at you), I was speechless, my heart melted (chapter 49, my heart pitter patters) but most of all I’m thankful and grateful to Karen for weaving a wonderous escape with unforgettable characters that I will treasure forever.
P.S. Karen – I think I speak for all the Maniacs – we can’t wait for the next adventure. More please 🙂
