It’s been a long time since I’ve loved a new paranormal romance. I think as I’ve shifted to more thrillers and mystery books, it’s hard to revert back to paranormal romance. Kingdom of Exiles is no ordinary romance story. It presents a new fantasy world filled with lovely monsters, magic and crazy romance.
Leena Edenfrell is a charmer. She charms magical beasts that can be called upon when needed. Exiled from her homeland from her people, Leena survives by selling her magical beasts, an act considered a “crime” in her society, risking her life every day to do it.
And to add to that like it wasn’t enought now someone has put a bounty on her head. In her desperation she makes a bolt move and bargains with the people who are after her. She bargains with Noc, the man in charge who has taken on the responsibility to fulfill the execution order.
Leena bargains with Noc, she convince him that can provide him and his men magical beasts that only a Charmer can call. Each beast has a special talent from simple ones to extraordinery. So the deal is on Leena, Noc, and three of his men set out on a quest to capture the magical beasts. However, they are rather surprised when Leena proves to be much more of a challenge than expected.
Leena has a secret, a secret that can prove her innocense. She has to find and capture a special beast. While they journey adventures find them, bonds are being created and a love rises with dangerous results.
Will Noc and Leena have the chance to do what they have in heart or their duty will overcome all?
This was a great start for a fantasy series. So smart the use of the beasts, they were one of my favorite parts of the story. The world building was so beautifully created and evolved throught out the story. The writing was fresh and simple in a good way. I truly liked the story and now i am looking forward to reading more books by Maxym Martineau.

Genre: Fantasy Romance
**RECEIVED ARC FOR HONEST REVIEW**
Wow! Just wow! I put off reading this book because I truly felt I wouldn’t be able to enjoy it but boy was I wrong.
Ok, I admit freely there is a lot going on from the start in this book. There is sooo much world and character building but nothing gets bogged down and drowned. It never gets overly detailed or lacking in details. Plus it is easy to follow no matter how complicated the story and plot gets.
Something I really liked was how the author handled our controversial issues set in this fictional world. Sexuality was just sexuality. Who you love is who you love. Then there is class systems. Wow, just so much is going on and all the while these two people are falling in love and one is marked for death and the other honor bound to kill the other. Just so much.
This will be a series or at least book one. This book does kinda end in a semi HEA. Minor cliffhanger. The book is funny, emotional, and wonderfully written. I truly am looking forward to reading the next book. I only hope the author keeps the same momentum going forward. 2 thumbs up. Awesome.
4.5 /5 all the way.
The blurb for this book sounded good and I thought it be something I like. I ended up loving it and didn’t want it to end.
I loved everything about this book, the story, the writing, the characters but what I like the most, was the wold. It was new and fresh and so much fun to follow not only Leena and her beasts and the beast realm but also Noc and his band of assassins. I loved how both groups (charmers and assassins) had their own system and magic and little world but yet it is all on one. The book is in dual POV and gives you Leena and Noc, which was great because we get to see both sites and what they think and do at all times.
Of course we get some nice and steamy romance between Leena and Noc but I think I like the friendship between all of them the best. A friendship between the unlikely group. I not only love Leena and Noc but his guys. They gave this book some humor and fun and where there for not only him but her. I thought Leena was a great match for this group and held her own just fine.
I really enjoyed Leena she was strong and never gave up, but I liked the most was that even with a guy in the picture she stood on her own two feet and didn’t rely on him.
Noc was broody, which was understandable given the situations he was in, but he still was fun to follow and once he lighten up a bit it was even better.
I also loved Kost, Calem and Oz and they were equally important to the story.
Overall I loved this book, it had humor, action, twist and turns and some romance. I adored the world and was sad to see it end. That being said I can’t wait for book two.
I rate it 4.5
From the first little blurb before the book began, I was excited and full of anticipation. This book did not disappoint.
Compelling, addictive, page-turning with heart pounding excitement, I couldn’t get enough. It had the perfect blend of action, love, angst and friendship.
This book is really in a class of its own! Assassins and beasts have never been this exciting or sexy. Maxym M. Martineau has created a masterpiece with this world. It is beyond compare. From all types of beasts to sexy-as-sin alpha male assassins and a kickass heroine, to a story line that will keep you enthralled, there is never a dull moment.
Leena was amazing. She was strong and resilient as well as sassy and smart. I can’t wait to see more of her.
Noc. Gorgeous, strong and cursed, Noc. I loved the way he lead his team and his people. Even though he had restrictions due to his curse, he gave as much as he could and always put them first.
Leena and Noc together? Smokin’. These two definitely make you feel their angst and attraction. They are perfect together.
As for the secondary characters in this book, the author made me care for them as much as the leads. I am praying and hoping that each get their own story told.
Oz is like a big, giant, teddy bear. You instantly love him and want to hug him.
Calem is flirty and fun. He made me smirk several times. If his story is written, I cannot wait to see what becomes of him.
Kost is rigid and serious. But, there is more to him then that. He is quite the enigma right now. He will definitely surprise you.
I need more of this world and these characters. As I turned the last page, I was so disappointed it was over. However, there is so much more to this story that is yet to come.
Kingdom of Exiles was simply spectacular and I cannot wait for the next installment so that I may immerse myself in this world with these characters once again.
I received an ARC via NetGalley of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Whelp, I have a new author to love and fill my tbr with. Martineau has created a world of magical beasts and the Charmers who tame them. It’s truly much more than just that but I have a huge soft spot for book beasts in general so when I read the synopsis and saw that, I was already excited to dive in.
Leena is a Charmer who has been exiled by the Council for something she did not do. Working to prove her innocence she finds herself face to face with the deadly leader of the Cruor, Noc, whose been hired to kill her. Noc has secrets of his own though and Leena may be just what he needs to execute his own agenda.
The world building was really well done and for once I used a map as I read! It actually helped put the different areas into perspective and lend more reality to the journey the characters go on (not to mention the location of certain beasts). I want a Beast Realm in my life. Oh to be a Charmer.
The magic system and the beasts abilities are probably my favorite aspect. The Charmers abilities to sway beasts into accepting a partnership with them was really well done. Each beast is unique and comes with specific things that need to be accomplished to entice a bond. Each beast also has their own magical abilities and did I mention there is a bestiary at the back of the book?! Man I loved the detail, can you tell! There is also the darker side of the magic system that Noc is a part of. Brought back from death and a part of the shadows. Harnessing the shadows abilities was a nice contrast to the goodness and light of the Charmer’s world.
Lastly, the characters. Oh the characters. Not only do you develop a sturdy bond with Leena and Noc, but you also fall hard for the side characters and (of course) their beasts. They come with flaws and personalities that flesh them out with their uniqueness and quirks. A little sprinkle of an LGBTQ theme was beautifully interlaced too. There are a few sexual scenes and the romance didn’t overtake the fantasy aspect for me. I really liked that. Some parts are a little slow and I did have some questions at the end but I have book two ready and waiting so I am pretty sure I’ll get answers soon.
My true rating is a 4.5/5, rounded for Goodreads. Thank you to Sourcebooksfire for the gifted copy in exchange for an honest and unbiased review. If you or someone you know enjoys Fantasy or High Fantasy fiction with a little romance (and beasts), then I highly recommend grabbing this one !
Exiled Beast Charmer Leena is determined to clear her name accused of a crime she didn’t commit. Betrayed by love, she is forced to commit an actual crime, one that punishable by death, to survive – sell her magical beasts. Now she has a price on her head and assassins on her heels she makes their leader an offer he can’t refuse. Noc, plagued by a curse that kills everyone he loves, accepts her deal in hopes of finding a cure to remove the curse. With half-truths and secrets yet to be revealed, Leena and Noc venture out in search of beasts
What surprised me the most about this book was how much I enjoyed the characters. Not only the main characters, which by the way, were fantastic. Leena’s predicament of wanting to clear her name and Noc’s curse Oh man both were nail bitters that I could not wait to discover if and how they would resolve themselves out. It’s the secondaries, mainly Noc’s men, that caught me off guard. Sometimes those secondaries are just fillers to the story while other times they shine. In the case of Kost, Calem and Oz, they were little sparkling surprises that I can’t wait to read more about.
As for the story, I loved it. The world-building was perfectly paced, the slow build-up from being wary to eventual trust among the characters. And then there are the beasts. I can’t compare it to any other story out there because I have never read a book even close to what author Maxym M. Martineau has written. Magical, mystical – yes. But one with so many beasts that are magical that can bond? Never! It is truly a delightfully unique story. And that ending…whoa! A HEA with a doozy of a cliffhanger. What is going to happen to Noc I don’t know, but I can’t WAIT to find out!
Stars: 5
I received this book from Netgalley. I was not compensated for the book other than the entertainment it provided. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Book in Search of an Identity
This is a peculiar book made up of odd bits of different types of speculative fiction that don’t come together as a whole. The world-building lacked as I couldn’t quite pin down what it was supposed to be. Steampunk? Medieval-ish fantasy? A modern parallel universe? I don’t think I ever figured that out! I never like to see modern words and phrases in speculative fiction unless it is clearly modern—which this is not—so I felt constantly jarred out of the book’s world. The group of assassins did not come across like true hard-edged killers should; these aren’t just regular men (or boys, given how they sometimes acted) with a normal job. That made for strange moments as well. The heroine at first seemed like she would be a gritty character, exiled and with a contract out on her, but she soon morphed into a YA type of heroine. Ugh. If you enjoy fantasy, I suggest finding a better-written series with a consistent, understandable world.
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
I couldn’t love this book more, it has absolutely everything I look for in the fantasy genre. There is the tough fiesty heroine, the luscious hero with a huge secret, witty side kick companions, humor, romance, intrique, and death. I have already pre-ordered book 2, The Frozen Prince, and cannot wait to continue Noc and Leena’s adventure. If you are not a fan of super steamy, then look elsewhere because this book provided enough fire for me to toast marshmallows and I live for that. The storyline is completely engaging and I never wanted it to end. Hate to wish the time away, but cannot wait for December!
Wow! I really enjoyed this book.
Kingdom of Exiles introduces us to an exciting new world with roots firmly in the realm of fantasy while still holding on to a little UF feel. It’s fresh and creative with a strong romance thread at its core, a well crafted cast of characters, a quest, and a mystery. What more could I ask for?
The book is told from the alternating POVs of Noc and Leena. Noc is the leader of the Cruor, a guild of assassins populated by men and women raised from the dead. (They’re not zombies and they’re not invincible, but just go with me here.) Leena is a Charmer in exile. Her people have the ability to lure and capture beasts–though it’s not what it sounds like. The beasts are more like magical creatures, some powerful and aggressive, others gentle and joyous. And the capture isn’t an enslavement so much as a bonding. It’s an act of love.
That doesn’t mean the beasts aren’t a source of power. They are and they are what keep Leena alive, even as a hit is placed on her with Noc’s guild. But Leena manages to turn things sideways, forging an agreement with the Cruor. She’ll provide them with beasts of their own in exchange for her freedom.
I liked Leena quite a bit. She is pragmatic and a survivor while still keeping a pure heart. And Noc? Strapped with a gnarly curse preventing him from loving or to be loved? He was right in my lane…a bear with a thorn in his paw. There’s such a great push and pull between these two, each believing they are doing what they must, even as they work in opposition with the other’s goals.
I loved the supporting characters like Callum, Oz, and Kost. I loved the way the author handled bisexuality and different ways to love with such simple acceptance. I loved the beasts and the world and just about everything about this book.
I’ve read some reviews complaining about the length and/or the pacing. I didn’t have issues with either. Yes, it’s a little on the longer side, but it didn’t feel like filler and it never lost my interest.
I kept this on my TBR longer than I meant to, but that only means a shorter wait for book 2. And I am excited to jump back in this world as soon as possible,
Rating: A-
I thoroughly enjoyed this debut novel. It has a great heroine, fantastic beasts, and assassins you can’t help but love! Won’t be easy waiting for the second book to find out more of Noc’s backstory, where he & Leena’s relationship goes, what the client has in store and seeing more of those assassin’s.
An exhilarating adventure and utterly absorbing story, Kingdom of Exiles by Maxym M. Martineau is filled with magic, mystery, fantastic creatures, witty banter, adorable characters, and a searing romance that absolutely captured my heart and kept me reading long into the night.
Leena Edenfrell is a Charmer, a human with magical powers who tames and captures magical beasts. The bond between master and beasts is sacred and selling them is a crime punishable by death. When Leena is wrongfully accused and gets exiled, she is forced to sell her beasts in order to survive. Her only chance of going back home to Hireath is to charm a powerful beast and convince the Charmers Council of her innocence. But, with a bounty on her head, Leena has no choice but to make a deal with Noc, the realm’s most dangerous yet charming assassin. In exchange for her life, she will give him some of her beloved magical creatures.
Noc is the leader of the guild at Cruor, a group of deadly assassins. He’s been keeping a secret – a curse that causes the people he loves to become sick and die from an incurable disease. Desperate for a cure, Noc accepts Leena’s offer and journeys with her to find the beast that might just save him. With the assassin’s oath, Noc knows that he must finish the job, kill Leena, or end up forfeiting his own life. But, choosing might just be the most difficult decision Noc will have to make cause he never expected to be charmed by Leena and start falling for her.
With secrets, lies, and dark forces threatening both their lives, will Leena and Noc find a way to finally get what they both really want?
I honestly haven’t been this excited about a fantasy romance in a while and this book really surprised me in so many ways. The writing is fantastic and the world-building is lush, vivid, intricate, and so enthralling. I adore everything about this imaginative world Martineau has created and found myself absolutely enamored by all the different aspects and magnificent beasts. The plot is fast-paced, brimmed with amazing action, sprinkled with humor, and has so many fun and delightful moments. It’s spellbinding, thrilling and overflowing with twists and surprises that had me flipping through the pages.
The characters are absolutely wonderful and I dare you not to fall in love with them. They’re charming, quirky, funny, and so intirguing. I love the brotherhood between the assassins and I think they’re sweet in their own ways. I also really love the friendship they form with Leena and how protective they become. I really don’t think I can choose a favorite cause each one of them has a special place in my heart. I also loved all the different beasts. They have their own personalities and quirks and I really enjoyed seeing them develop relationships with their masters.
Leena and Noc are both great MCs and their character arcs are done so well. Leena is fierce, strong, determined, and has a heart of gold. She loves her beasts and only parts with them to survive. Noc is broody and impatient, but he’s an amazing leader who’ll do anything to protect his family even if it means never having true happiness. They’re both dealing with impossible situations and seeing them handle everything together is incredibly satisfying. Oh and their romance is wicked hot and super sexy. Given their situation and who they are, Leena and Noc both try to fight their attraction to each other. I won’t spoil the fun for you, but there’s definitely some delicious tension between them and their chemistry is heart-meltingly swoony.
Kingdom of Exiles by Maxym M. Martineau is a stunning debut novel and the perfect introduction to a magical and enchanting series. This book has everything I LOVE in stories – beautiful writing, characters that will steal your heart, fantastic world-building, great action scenes, endearing friendships, and a simmering romance with all the swoons. Be prepared to immerse yourself in a wonderfully thrilling journey and a fantastical adventure you won’t want to end. I promise you, you don’t want to miss this one!
I received an advance reader copy from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for a fair and honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This was such a neat story. The blurb says it’s Assassin’s Creed meets Fantastic Beasts, but to me it felt more like Pokemon for adults who love fantasy. I loved it.
I hesitated to mention the similarities with Pokemon, because I’m afraid that’ll put people off, and I really enjoyed this book.
The characters live in a world of magical beasts. Not your traditional mythological beasts, but new and interesting beasts. They’re categorised by how dangerous they are. Leena is a Charmer, which means that she can tame the beasts to do her will. However, a Charmer’s skill decides what level of beast they can tame. Only the very best can tame the most dangerous. Wild beasts live in the same world as the people, but the tamed beasts live in a magical world and can be summoned by the Charmer as required. I liked that there were natural limits to how many beasts a Charmer could summon and for how long, before the Charmer became exhausted. The beasts described in this story ranged from adorably cute to deadly and freaky.
Leena has been exiled from her homeland, where most Charmers live. Someone sends an assassin after her, and when Leena takes control of the situation, she bargains with the assassins. Noc is the leader of the assassins, and he transfers the assassin’s oath from the original assassin to himself, then promises Leena that if she can gift him and his friends with a beast each (of a certain level), his men won’t hurt her. A Charmer can transfer ownership of a beast to another, even if that person doesn’t have the ability to Charm a beast on their own. It is forbidden to transfer a beast in exchange for money though, as that would end up with beasts being transferred to those who wouldn’t care for them appropriately.
Noc is cursed, and he particularly wants a beast that will be able to remove his curse. Of course, he doesn’t tell Leena why he wants a particular beast. He also doesn’t tell her that the assassin’s oath that he now holds means that if he doesn’t kill her, he will die in her stead. He promised that his men wouldn’t hurt her, not that he wouldn’t. Of course, as they all go on this mission to find and capture the beasts Leena promised his men, they get to know each other better, and things change. However, there’s still the matter of the unbreakable assassin’s oath, and someone is still trying to kill Leena.
On top of all of that, I loved the writing style. So beautifully descriptive.
Fog-colored paneled walls were laden with oil paintings in stark white frames, and an impossibly long tarnished platinum table was centered beneath a row of chandeliers.
I really enjoyed this book. It was interesting, it was fun, and it kept me guessing because I couldn’t figure out how they were going to overcome the issues. I’m looking forward to reading the next one in the series.
Really enjoyed this debut fantasy romance! I’m not sure I’d compare it to Assassin’s Creed especially since there isn’t much assassin-y stuff happening, but the Fantastic Beasts comparison definitely works, and, in fact, I wanted more of that and less relationship drama.
While I absolutely adored the world-building, and I freakin’ loved every single one of the side characters that accompany Leena and Noc on their journey, some of the relationship stuff could’ve taken a backseat. Noc keeps physical and emotional distance between himself and Leena–and he has perfectly valid reasons for doing so–but once his feelings turned romantic (and not just sexual), there was a little bit too much oh-I’d-die-for-her. Normally I’m totally on board with this kind of thing (possessiveness, yes!!), but here it felt like Noc’s personality did a slight 180.
Still, I really enjoyed this. The description of the beasts and this mystical land Maxym M. Martineau created was stunning, the writing was fantastic and fresh, and I loved Noc’s brothers so much that I’d read a whole book about just them!
Loved this book. More people need to read it! As, Jessica, my partner in reading at Books Don’t Review Themselves podcast says, “This book needs to become a movie.” Or as I say, “A TV show.”
If you are new to Fantasy Romance, this is a great one to start with. There are various kingdoms and people’s names that are not as familiar as Ryan or Madysen, but Maxym Martineau does well with the progression of the story, not going to so many different places that you don’t know which town the characters are in.
And as far as having unfamiliar names, Martineau does such a fantastic job at character building that you quickly learn who everyone is. For a series debut it really is amazing how quickly the author made me feel for these characters.
As far as all the new beasts go, I could see this getting confusing, but there is a Beastiary at the back of the book that gives you descriptions of them, as well as a few drawings. I would love to see a colored Beastiary with all the creatures Martineau makes up, and perhaps that is in the works for the future.
While I enjoyed the whole book, I did enjoy the scenes with the beasts just a smidge more. I am excited to see all the new creatures Martineau comes up with in the next two books, The Frozen Prince (coming out February 25, 2020) and The Shattered Crown (coming late 2020).
I was worried at the beginning that a love triangle would form between Leena, Noc, and the bartender, Dez. But I am so happy this didn’t happen! Book series have been ruined for me when the love triangle keeps getting dragged out.
And as far as the sex scenes go, they felt so natural to the book. They didn’t feel like they were added just to have more sex in the book. The way they were written was very tantalizing, and very real. When you pictured them, you didn’t question if bodies could bend that way, or if that position would be really uncomfortable. And I really liked that Leena came first without Noc having to finish at the same time as her, as so many other books do.
I highly recommend this, especially if you enjoy Fantasy or Fantasy Romance. And this is a series that I am really looking forward to continuing.
I enjoyed reading about this whole new world to me. I have not read anything like this story before nor I have I read anything previously by this author. I think for a debut book for this author it was wonderfully written and flowed beautifully. I look forward to reading more by this author. This story checks so many boxes of what I enjoy read, it has magical creatures, adventure, a goal, and a heroine that is strong with a romance that is not some instant happily ever after at first sight. I read an excerpt of this book before it was released and that had me hooked and wanting more and I must say the full book did not let me down and was worth the wait! I loved Leena and Noc and their adventure.
This book! I loved it the moment I read the first word and it has been a while since a book consumed me and let me get lost into its pages. It was so hard to put down and would find myself thinking about this story and characters in between my reading time.
The author has created such a unique fantasy world and the magical beasts had to be one of my favorite parts of the book. I definitely was envious in Lenna’s ability to charm these animals. Lenna is the main heroine and she is considered a charmer, a being with magical powers to tame the wild magical beast. She has been exiled from her homeland and now forced to sell her beloved animals in order to survive.
Lenna was a beautifully written character. She was someone who had lost everything and was broken but not defeated. She is a fighter and was willing to do anything to clear her name and get back to the only home she had known. Though she did what she needs to survive, Leena was also vulnerable. She desperately wanted to find a true family and to just love and care for her animals.
And then there is the Curor and guild of assassins. Can I just say I loved these supernatural assassins and they have become my new squad goals! I would want Noc, Oz, Kost & Calm as my friends as well. They were truly brothers and loved how they each developed their own relationship with Lenna. They each a special bond to this charmer and it just endured me to these four even more.
This story really has it all, action, adventure, dark secrets, forbidden love and humor-filled. You will never be bored and you will also get a nice punch in the feels. I love this story is peeled back layer by layer but you don’t get all your questions answered. There are still some mystery and secrets left to be solved/revealed and I can’t wait to see how this all of these characters story continue to unfold.

Shelby –
Kingdom of Exiles by Maxym M. Martineau absolutely blew me away! I’m not sure what I was expecting, but this totally exceeded my expectations.
Leena is an exiled Beast Charmer. They are a rare breed of people (?) that have the unique ability to charm and keep various magical beasts, which range from fluffy and sweet cuddle bugs to dangerously violent war-mongers. I enjoyed learning about the beasts just as much as the character development! Did I mention that I love Leena? She’s brave, strong, sassy, and smart but she’s also compassionate and passionate. She doesn’t back down from a fight but knows when to step back. The more I read, the more I wanted to meet her.
The adventure that Leena ends up on is partially her own plan, with some wrenches throw in. Specifically, the bounty placed upon her life and being carried out by Cruor, or the Shadow Assassins. We are trying to figure out WHO placed the bounty, why they’re after her, and how to remove it.
The assassins are another interesting lot of people, just as intriguing as Leena. They each have their own history, and I hope that we’ll get a book per character. I fell in love with Os’s sweetness, and Callum is the constant flirt, Kost is a dark unknown, and then there’s Noc. I’m not giving anything away, but Noc’s story is something I need more of. We get bits and pieces, but I want to know his backstory.
All in all, this was an excellent fantasy story with the depth and world building you’d come to expect. The characters were well developed, and the plot was solid. I am adding the rest of this series to my to-be-read shelf ASAP!
Reviewers on the Wicked Reads Review Team were provided a free copy of Kingdom of Exiles (The Beast Charmer #1) by Maxym M. Martineau to read and review.
Heart pounding action, fun witty banter, emotionally thrilling highs and lows not to mention danger around every twist and turn this magical adventure has all this and so much more…. was a exciting and highly entertaining read from beginning to end and I look forward to more to come.
I liked this book. The beasts i think are the best part of this book. Though both Noc and Leena are both fascinating to read about. I really liked the whole beast, shadows and other things that mentioned in this book. Leena is trying to get her life back and Noc has another mission. Together along with three other friends they find a way to accomplish one mission. You will find a great adventure, a love story, friendship and interesting magic in this book. I can’t wait for the next book.

Kingdom of Exiles by Maxym Martineau is book One in The Beast Charmer Series. This starts the story of Leena and Noc.
Leena is a beast charmer who was falsely accused of something and banished. So she has had to make her way alone, until she ends up on a hit list. Noc is an assassins who happens to be looking for her but Leena ends up talking them into a deal because they need beast that she can collect.
This was a great fantasy read and I can’t wait for the next installment.
