A beautiful story but very cliched. Everything you would expect in this type of story happens and there were no surprises. I desperately wanted to adore this but sadly I did not.
Written at about seventh grade level, did not enjoy this book.
I received this book as an ARC and am writing this review of my own volition and in my own words. As always.
I was very surprised at how engaged I became with this story. There were many instances of teenage angst that is the one thing that will usually turn me from a YA book, but the angst seemed to blend in well enough with the storyline that I was able to ignore it.
I got to know the characters fairly well, though I wish there had been a bit more fleshing out of their personalities and places in the world, in their families and among their households. Some more detail could have been included in many of the chapters as well, but all in all, it did move along and the storyline flowed well.
The fact that she decided to make this into a trilogy rather than a standalone is a good thing as there is much to be explored and much to be explained, but the bit of surprises we’re left with will certainly bring us back to book 2 and 3. There are twists that were hinted at but ultimately forgotten until the end which I found oddly compelling. I do look forward to the way Brittni twisted a familiar story into it’s mirrored reflection. Should be fun to see how she carries it through.
Very well done, Brittni Chenelle! Very well done indeed. Keep up the good work!
Sorry. I very much disliked Princess Charlotte and the style.
Dual POV between Princess Charlotte and Prince Young. I thought the style of Princess Charlotte’s POV was very ‘petulant child’. It felt younger than YA. Not that the language was simple, more that the style was young.
Princess Charlotte’s life isn’t hers. Marrying at 16 to someone she doesn’t like. So yes, that’s tough, but the way she handled it made me dislike her so much! Especially when she… no, that would be spoiling. But it made me not care about her and I so like to care for my bookfriends!
Prince Young is enthusiastic. He is a bit too serious, maybe, but there’s good reason. Then something goes wrong. Lots of things go wrong!
I couldn’t warm up to the style. Why did I keep reading then? I guess I just wanted to give it a real chance. The idea of the story was good. It was an adventure, but I just I never really got into it. And the ending was too sad. I think it was meant to be hopeful, but to me, it was just sad. And unfinished! It felt so… disappointing. I had to distance myself. Resulting in a low score. So, sorry, it just wasn’t for me. Sadly, I won’t be reading any more books by this author.
As you’re introduced to Charlotte, you think of her as spoiled and selfish. She’s is being set-up with an arranged marriage to save her people and have a male rule the country as king. Bring in Prince Young her intended and his older brother Minseo. As the story continues you learn more about the characters, their feelings, and what they will and won’t do for another. From the beginning you suspect something sinister about Prince Emmett, the ending for his is satisfying. The ending letter epilogue mixes in a new twist making it into an Arthurian tale and introducing characters you know from the legend. Interested to see how the next story adds to this tale.
Great YA book!!!
I really like this book, the plot is intriguing and I love the POV chapters, mainly for the MC, but some of them from secondary characters.
I think Charlotte and Young acted accordingly their age and situation, as it was beyond their control and experience, they did their best.
The twist and turns through the book will grasp your attention and the final will shocked the hell out of you, not a traditional ending
I def will be reading the rest of the books in this series!!!
I enjoyed this book but felt that it was a bit disjointed in areas. It was well written and the characters and story were relatively well developed. I liked the idea of the different characters having different chapters but found myself getting a bit confused at times. Overall I liked the individual character personalities and their relationship dynamics changed and evolved throughout the book. The story was action packed and full of twists and turns. It had suspense, intrigue, emotion and hot chemistry. I enjoyed this book and look forward to the next book in the series!!
I received an arc for a voluntary review.
I loved this book from start to finish. There are so many twists and turns. It is jammed packed full of action and keeps you on the edge of your seat wondering what is going to happen next. Charlotte is not your typical princess and refuses to act like the prim and proper woman she is expected to be. Young is coming into his own and learning to act like a King, but everything keeps going wrong. I definitely recommend.
This was a great book it is YA. There were some parts that were glossed over but otherwise it’s a great read. It’s full of twists and turns, betrayal and love. The end killed me! I can’t wait to see what happens in book 2

This was the first book I got off a reviewing site called Booksirens. It was one that sounded the best. It was…okay. It started strong, and the writing was fairly good and had a good flow to it, but in a lot of ways the book fell short.
First off, I was bored. A princess is forced to marry a prince from another kingdom, and right before the wedding the castle is attacked by enemies. The prince then stays to help, but then is going to be executed, at the same time the princess is forced to marry the other prince. While the two work together to fix this and find the king. The attempt at drama was there, but it fell short.
Secondly, I was just confused. Said “other prince” “saved” her castle. At first, they hint that he’s the villain. Then it sounds like he is the one who drove the others away, but stayed to try to take over. And the Queen in all this–good or bad, I wasn’t sure. She seems to be working for or with the intruder prince, in exchange for her daughter’s hand, but often this doesn’t seem overly forced. Like she does play a level of villainy in this.
When the castle was attacked, prince/King-to-be helps the princess and her maid with help from his brother. When villain prince shows his true colors, the good prince’s brother gets captured, (Still not sure where he went), and the prince gets tossed into jail to be executed.
At the same time that the princess is working on saving him, she wants to look for her father. But, then so does the queen, who agrees to marry off her daughter to the villain in exchange for saving her husband from the other intruders. Again, what is her angle? Is this just super good writing or bad writing that never thought her through.
Third, the sad attempt at a love… triangle(s)? Square? While the princess and prince didn’t want to marry each other, while hiding out, they do form an attraction to one another. He’s also the only one she has left, so really, he’s her only help at this point. The maid then also starts to form an attraction, after one friendly conversation and a shared look. Again, though, the maid also only really just met him too. So when it comes down to it, the maid gets mad at the princess for possibly having to marry the villain (cause there’s a lot of choice here!) and for not loving the prince enough. If she was a longtime girlfriend or something, I would get it. But this was just a poorly executed love triangle. Then later turns out the prince’s brother is in love with the princess too and at the same time, the maid loves him. All while the princess is “jealous” because she thinks he loves the mad since he refuses to go back to his kingdom. Why does she care?
Fourth, connected to that, the characters themselves weren’t the greatest. I couldn’t wrap my head around the princess. In one scene she’s crying and trying to make her maid/friend un-mad at her. In another she’s carrying swords and trying to be a bad a** and help a jailbreak. So which is it? I see she’s clearly related to her mother.
Time jumps by weeks but no indication of it. I’m really not quite sure of that ending.
I could see a good story here. I think it needed some more fleshing out and some finer plot details fixed. As is, it did fall flat for me.
Interested to see what happens next!
RARELY do I set aside a book and not finish it. I’ve had to do just that with this book. It literally jumps from one chaos to another, there isn’t really any coherent building to the plot. It goes from a small bit of story building and then jumps straight from one chaotic plot twist to another. I literally could not force myself to finish it. And trust me, I’ve finished some pretty bad books. That’s not to say that this is a bad book, it was just driving me nuts and I could no longer take the torture of the almost juvenile plot. It might be ok for tweens, but definitely wasn’t for me. And just so it’s out there, I really regret leaving these types of reviews. I really think with a few classes the writer could be extraordinary! The basis for a great book was there, she just needed some experience building the story.
Princess Charlotte, Prince Young, accompanied by Milly and Minseo are some of the characters in Kingdom Cold by Brittni Chanelle. This high fantasy is unique in many ways, like presentation, style and pace. You will find action, some sexual conversation and a few mentions of such activities in the book, though nothing graphic. Also there are some bloody but, not gory scenes here and there to spice it up.
I had a good time reading the story, though I’m not sure I liked the ending. I understand another book will come soon and that will help with the way this book ended. I would recommend it to YA and pre-teens alike.
This is such a fast-paced book filled with intriguing worldbuilding. The author creates a very detailed fantasy world that draws you in with the initial description of wedding preparations – then you find that things are not going to go the way you expect. The story gives us the POVs of both Charlotte and Young (and a few others) and we get a very well-rounded view of the action from all of their perspectives. And there is a lot of action! I think this is a great book to start off the series, because it ends at a point that leaves you wanting to read more. Since I don’t want to give anything away, that’s all I’ll say about that. Very imaginative, well-written and highly recommended.
This is a fantastic read that captured me right from the first page. This is an epic story that is fast paced and full of action that had me on the edge of my seat. The Characters are very well developed. This is definitely a must read.

Considering the fact that I really disliked the beginning of the book, overall it didn’t turn out that bad.
My main problem was the main character Charlotte. She was so naive and acted so stupidly that I thought I’ll never make it to the end of the book. Thankfully, the story was very different from what it appear in the beginning. I was pleasantly surprised when things, you never really see in a typical YA, happened here. I appreciated that the author tried to make her book different and unique.
The plot overall was just okay, but the book was generally easy to get through. As for the characters, with the exception of Charlotte that got some development throughout the story, no one else was really that interesting or had some depth in them.
Still a fun and fast read, just nothing that special for my taste.
I loved how the author tells the story through the thoughts of different characters. This helps you feel what they are feeling and really understand the dynamic. The characters were relatable and complex. When I thought the story was going one way it changed direction quickly and made it difficult to put the book down. I never knew what was going to happen. It made me laugh, cry and worry about the characters. I would love this story to continue.
This was a great, action packed fantasy. It was very enjoyable from beginning to end. It was my first read by this author, and I can’t wait to read more!
This book was amazingly well done. First of all it handled diversity and representation in masterful and subtle way that was so matter of fact that it was beautiful. Secondly, it’s an entirely new experience to have to build the world through the perspectives of the characters instead of through a narrator telling you what you see which was such a fun and amazing experience. You start off feeling like you are dropped in the middle of chaos and as the characters learn more about what’s happening around them you do too! I loved this new format. It challenged me And it provides for amazing thrills. It was an easy read and amazingly fast paced. It’s marketed as young adult but I’m a full grown adult and completely loved it. There’s a twist in almost every chapter and things were so unexpected at every turn. I definitely recommend for the adventurous reader who isn’t stuck to the same old format. Can’t say enough how great this book really was.
