Acapulco, once the glittering playground of Hollywood’s Rat Pack, now enjoys the highest homicide rate in Mexico thanks to druglords like El Chapo. The Detective Emilia Cruz series takes on cartels, corruption and social inequality. It’s not just a walk on the beach . . .
After 30 years as a CIA intelligence officer, Carmen Amato writes mysteries and thrillers loaded with intrigue and action. Readers who love police procedural series by Ian Rankin, Jo Nesbo, Ann Cleeves, Peter May, as well as the Department Q novels and Don Winslow’s cartel and border thrillers set in Mexico, also love Detective Emilia Cruz’s complex plots, fast action, pulse-pounding suspense, and exotic location.

Mexican police procedural adds interesting twists. Hard to predict.
It did not hold my attention
A reminder that in certain parts of the world that are closer than you think, civilization is a sham.
I like the whole series
If there were a category between good and 5 star excellent I’d give Carmen Amato’s Emilia Cruz series that–4.5 stars. I’ve got to save something for truly great literature in the thriller genre. I love the strong female detective, even if her prowess is over the top. Acapulco is portrayed as enchanting for its beauty, food and likable everyday characters, but shocking and true to the news for its corruption, drug trade, inequality and danger–the kind of place you’d love to visit if you dared. Romance is woven well into the action. The central characters are well constructed, the suspense and action are first rate, and it’s an easy story to get into and caught up in. I’m ready for more.
Good read really liked this writer
I liked it was in Mexico with a feel for the way things work there.
I really liked the plot – the main character is a female police detective in Mexico – great plot and she is a character that I can identify with – hopes, dreams and that vulnerability that most folks don’t see.
I enjoyed this book very much. I like police action thrillers which is why I read this. I hadn’t heard of the author previously but I will read more. I highly recommend this book
