A modern retelling of the Hades & Persephone myth. This story is haunting, steamy, twisted, and has a hot alpha hero.
King of Shadows by Amelia Wilde is the retelling of the story of Persephone and Hades which is a totally different take on their story. Persephone is a sheltered by her mother who not only keeps a tight reign on Persephone but is cold and cruel. All Persephone wants to do is be free and go to New York city which is forbidden. Her mother says that the world is cruel especially men. One man in particular even wants Persephone dead according to her mother. When Persephone decides to run away with a guy who works for her mother, their actions set off a chain of events that has Persephone coming into direct contact with none other than Luther Hades. This story had me guessing and I wasn’t quite sure where the story was going but by the end I was sucked in. I liked the relationship between Hades and Persephone. What started out one way between them ended up into something much more. The story however ended on a cliffhanger which I wasn’t happy about. However I am curious as to how this relationship between Hades and Persephone will end. 3.5 starts for me.
Why am I always the LAST to know I’m reading a book that is not actually a whole story and may or may not end in a cliffhanger?! #sendhelp
What a dark and twisted retelling of Persephone and Hades story. From beginning to end I was hooked; these two… their immediate connected undeniable but how their story unfolds was completely unexpected. I could not put this book down! Although this is a retelling of the Greek Myth; this brand new book world is just that brand new. Full of secrets, lies, overprotective mama’s and the enigma that is Luther Hades. And now well now… I’m left with a lot more questions than answers; and don’t even get me started on that ending! GAH! My kindle went clear across the room! King of Shadows was SO GOOD and I CANNOT wait for Summer Queen

King of shadows is a dark Hades and Persphone story. Persphone grew up sheltered by her mother. Always telling that men where bad and that the man Luther Hades who lives in the mountain will kill her. Decker is a guy she met one day when her mom was to sick to give flowers to the delivery guy. For 6 months she comes fond of him and plans to escape with him. But plans never work that way and to save the life of the guy she thinks she loves she trades her life for his. To do anything for Hades for Decker to live. She doesnt expect what to feel the way she does once she belongs to Hades.
This story was dark and dirty and everything in between. The building relationship between Persphone and Hades is intriguing. A man that is the shadows, has feelings. I look forward to the next installment of this story!
I recieved an ARC in exchange for a honest review.
This was the first “dark” book I have read by Amelia. I was used to her sweet side so it took a minute to adjust, but once I was there, it flew by!
Persephone wanted her freedom, but at what cost? She made a deal with Luther that might not only cost her, her life, but her heart too.
Can she escape before it was too late?
Be prepared to be on the edge of you seat, this book was intense!! It wasn’t my normal style, but I trusted Amelia, and she didn’t let me down. The cliffhanger left me ready for more…hurry Amelia!!
Be warned, this does end in a cliffhanger but what a way to end it…until the next book. Hades and Persephone hooked me in. I can’t say too much or it will give it away but this is a retelling and it had me on the edge of my seat trying to figure out what was going to happen. I can’t wait for the next one!
King of Shadows is the first book that I have read by this author and is the first book in this series. Because at the end of this book is a huge cliffie! The kind that says OH NO, WHAT the you know what!
This story is a bit dark for those that don’t like that kind of book.
This is the modern day myth retelling of Persephone and Hades.
King of Shadows is Luther Hades and Persephone’s story. Persephone has been very sheltered and kept hidden away by her mother Demeter except for a short time at a private school.
Her mother has warned her of bad people and the bad things that could happen if she ever left home.
Persephone has been so sheltered that she just wants to move out on her own. She wants her “freedom”. When she acts on getting her freedom she finds she walks right into a trap and into Hades arms.
Wow now get ready for a sizzling hot story between Hades and Persephone!
Summer Queen will be out sometime this Spring and I will be in a virtual line waiting for it!

This is a deliciously dangerous modern retelling of the Hades & Persephone myth…and if you’re into hot alpha heroes, this one’s for you.
Amelia Wilde took me to a dark, twisted, deviant and dangerous world in King of Shadows. The complex interplay of mind games and power plays dripping with sensuality completely stunned me. It was intense and breathtaking to say the least. A riveting story of innocence, lust, corruption and desire.
Persephone had a protected life as her mother did not allow her to experience outside world ever. She has been warned about dangerous men lurking in shadows who will hurt and kill her. But she wants to go to city away from the flower fields and when Dereck asks her to run away with him, she is more than ready. And on the ill fated night, she encounters the monster her mother warned her about. Luther Hades. And she had to trade herself to save her lover. And so begins the raw, pervert, dangerous, sinful and life changing journey of Hades and Persephone.
This story was playing with my mind. I had so many conflicting emotions just like Persephone. She is scared, angry, lonely and just heartbroken when Hades takes her to his kingdom in mountains. But she is also oddly attracted, fascinated and aroused by him. Hades is not a gentleman. He has body of a beast and mind of the devil. He is richer than god and feared by everyone as his power is unlimited. He is cruel, ruthless, arrogant and cold hearted. He enjoys her tears and demands her complete submission. The dominant in the devil is arousing the dirty, filthy, forbidden and humiliating needs in Persephone. And she does not know how to deal with them. It’s more complicated as Hades sometimes shows a totally different softer side of him. They have this electrifying chemistry. Hades is using her, breaking her down and owning her without a doubt. But she is also challenging him. I am completely captivated by him and I want more of his brooding, possessive and alphahole goodness. The story ends with a brutal twist and I cannot wait for the next one. So many puzzle pieces are in to play. And so many things are at risk including Luther’s diamond empire.
King of Shadows by Amelia Wilde was pure ecstasy and sinful deliciousness for me. I lost myself into the powerful writing. A brilliant beginning to an epic series.

Love mythology and even better when there is a modern twist to it. Grab this book today. You wont regret it.
King of Shadows by Amelia Wilde is the sexy, twenty-first century retelling of the story of Persephone and Hades. Persephone is hidden away by her mother, almost to the point of smothering her, she isn’t allowed to experience the outside world for fear of men trying to kidnap and hurt her. One night, she has arranged to escape with her friend (maybe more) Dereck but is caught by Luther Hades and told to choose, her life for her lovers. Herein lies the story of how Hades captured Persephone and the journey their story takes.
Persephone is certainly intrigued by Hades, after all, he is dark, handsome, gritty and sexual…all of the things she wants to experience but is afraid to. We also see the darker side of Hades in this book, he is demanding, deviant and will stop at nothing to devour Persephone and often he can be cruel in how he treats Persephone.
What I really liked about this story is how up to date it was but how relatable the characters were. You could see Persephone being in the flower fields, wanting to escape and being a bit naïve. You can see Hades owning a huge company that might be under threat and him being all dominant and only caring about his dog.
There are a lot of conflict of feelings from both characters and it was good to see both POV’s which definitely makes the characters appear more human and emotional. Sexy scenes and chemistry between the two are hot and there are certainly a lot of twist and turns in this book to keep you turning the page. Alas, there is also a cliff-hanger…how we hate those! But it will definitely leave you wanting to read more of this story and what is going to happen to both Persephone and Hades.

When I started King of Shadows by Amelia Wilde, I could not stop reading! A wicked and steamy read with such an unexpected ending! Persephone has been kept very sheltered and because of this is a bit naïve. All she wanted was to experience the world beyond what she has known. When she gets the chance, or so she thinks, she encounters a dangerous man. Luther Hades was dark, determined and gruff. When he takes Persephone, she knows it’s wrong, but something about him draws her to him. Their story is full of surprises and twist and I can’t wait to see what happens next!

Happy reading!
Sinfully captivating!
Unapologetically ruthless and sexy as sin. Luther Hades is deliciously dark and he owns it. The darkness he knows… he knows how to handle it and what to do with it. What is foreign to him, is this light Persephone brings. Her naivety and innocence is such a contrast to Luther’s way of life, but also cant seem to keep away from. With just a few words Persephone turns her world upside down, therefore sealing her fate to Luther. Unbeknownst what the future holds.
“I’ll do anything.”
And that’s just the beginning. I love how these characters balance each other out and the changes and growth through the story. I couldn’t get enough and before I knew it, it was over too soon. I cant wait for the next book and get more of these characters. Greek mythology’s Hades and Persephone with a modern twist. Amelia Wilde did a great job in her adaptation to this classic tale. Cant wait for what happens in the next book!
Amazingly written in dual POV, King of Shadows is book 1 of this new series and does end in a cliffhanger. Book 2 cant come soon enough.
Now I’ve read this twice… that’s right, TWICE! I couldn’t get enough of him in the first round, that I had to go back to the beginning and read it ALL OVER AGAIN! That is how much this story drew me in and wouldn’t let me go. How do you turn away from Luther Hades?! When you figure out how, let me know, cause I need my brain and soul back.
Let’s start with the king himself… Luther Hades. King of the Underworld. Prince of Darkness. The Devil himself. This man… no, this GOD is everything I wanted him to be. Dark, alpha, dominating, and real. He knows himself, and won’t take sh*t from anyone, while taking what he wants… like Persephone. While he draws the darkness to him, he can’t turn away from the light that she is, so why not take it and bend it to his will, while tasting the tears along the way. The process is absolutely delicious, and you won’t want to look away.
Persephone. Sheltered, innocent spirit. She never had a chance against him. Hades draws out all of the secrets that hide in the shadows of her mind and uses them to play her like a finely tuned violin. Her internal struggle is sweet, but her final decent into the darkness of her passions is beautiful.
This is a perfect retelling of a classic mythological tale. It’s intense, and will have you so fully under its spell you won’t want to come back to reality. So when you do, you’ll be begging like me for the next installment, Summer Queen… Between you and me, it’s too far off for my liking.
Amelia did a great job with this dark world. Everything was so vivid and descriptive! Luther Hades was the ultimate cold, ruthless man. Persephone was the sweet innocent young women, whom her mother kept hidden in a prison like home. On her way to escape, Hades catches her. He was the one she was warned about. Now in the clutches of Hades, Persephone fights to become who she wants. Well on her way, something happens to put everything in jeopardy. A part two is coming as this book is left off in a cliffhanger. Lots of steam and action!
Arrrghhh.
Its so perfectly terrible!
Hades is a dirty rotten man.
While persephone is the definition of innocence. But no longer. He has tainted her, and she, him. I knew when I saw I was at 90% this would not end how I wanted. That I woukd infact have to wait for the next book.
The sweet, tortuous wait for spring.
I highly recommend this dark, disturbing, beautiful book.
Happy reading!

Note: I have voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this title.
Lately I’ve been in a bit of a book funk and nothing was grabbing my attention. That was until I started reading this. I thought I would read just a few pages to get a feel of the story. Before I realised it, I was already half way through the book in the blink of an eye! There was something captivating in the way the story pulled me in and wrapped itself around me. This is the third retelling of ancient myths I’ve read but I think is the possibly the best one I’ve read so far. One of the others I read wasn’t able to grab my attention and hold it the way this one did.
Hades is a fascinating character. He lives up to the book title. He is a master of the shadows and much of his intentions are hidden in the darkness. I was glad the story had a dual point of view because that’s when we get to see glimpses of Hades’ thought process. But even then, it is still uncertain about what his true intentions are. Sepphie or Persephone was a good character but at times I found her frustrating. She was naive and a bit of a cry baby however I had to remind myself that she had been sheltered most of her life and rather given the chance to experience life the way others did. In that regard, I understood her confusion and conflict.
There is a lot of questions still unanswered and hidden motives of people around Persephone. I’m looking forward to seeing what else is in store for Hades and Persephone. And I’m especially looking forward to seeing more of Hades.
I love a good mythology spin and the Hades + Persephone story is one of my all time favorites! This is definitely one of the more straightforward retellings, with a dark edge that’s an intense guilty pleasure. The writing is lyrical and the world described lush, even in the dark corners.
I’m anxious for the second one, because there’s a lot of Demeter, Zeus and Hades backstory we’re still missing and I feel like it’s going to be just as dark and twisted as the rest of this ‘love’ story!
Definitely worth a read if you like this kind of thing!
Holy Moly, what a book!! All I can say is try to prepare yourself for the epic sizzling darkness that is Luther and the sinful, twisted lusciousness he brings with him! As a big fan of Greek mythology and a huge romance junkie, this book felt like it was almost created with me personally in mind. I loved this book. Luther and Persephone’s story is a utterly consuming blend of scorching heat, warring desires, and intense emotional turmoil. Be warned that there is a cliffhanger at the end of this book and quite honestly, the next piece of this couple’s story cannot come soon enough to make me happy.
