This author is a pretty new author to me, I have read one other book from her, but this book has put her on my list of go to authors. This is the story of (Luther) Hades, and Persephone. Persephone has lived a shelters life, told to stay away from trouble, in the form of the devil himself, Hades. But when Persephone decides to leave the safety of her sheltered life, she is put into Hades cross hairs, and must make a deal with the devil. This was an intense read, dark, suspenseful, twisted, dramatic, and steamy. This was well written, the characters has lots of hot chemistry, and I can’t wait to read the next book by this author!!!
Wow. Just wow. King of Shadows is a delicious and dark retelling of Hades & Persephone. Amelia Wilde builds the tension beautifully, and the chemistry between Luther & Persephone is sizzling hot. Don’t miss this modern myth!

I mean who does not love a story with Hades and Persephone in it? Amelia Wilde took their story as twisted as it is, I mean technically he is her uncle, and wrapped it up in a silky black bow.
The build-up in King of Shadows is perfection. And could Hades be any more sinister? I mean yummy? I mean dark and deadly? Hades is written true to character in my opinion. He is not a bachelor looking for the next hookup. He is the ruler of the underworld. He is The King of Shadows.
Amelia Wilde can write a book and it is like she picks you up and puts you right into her books. Each scene, each chapter you are standing right in that room as she directs this film that is going on in your head. From the home Persophone grew up in with her mother, to the looming mountain that is standing in the background. Her writing even makes the mountain a character in the book. No, it does not talk and it is not a “character” but it is right there in the background, dark and brooding.
The only thing left is I need Summer Queen, pronto! Amelia, you got on that train and you left us at the station.
Very interesting
Luther Hades is big, he is bad, and everyone knows not to cross him. He rules the mines with his massive dog Conor and a ruthless attitude.
Persephone is a sweet young girl who is held oppressive under the rule of her mother Demeter. She longs for freedom, love, and the library. Demeter refuses to let her out of her sight. She tells her one thing over and over…Hades will find you and he will kill you.
Persephone makes a daring escape attempt, but of course, falls right into the hands of Hades. Things get…complicated.
I loved this introduction to Hades and Persephone. They are going to be HAF together and I already know there will be suspense and drama!! It ends in a cliffhanger but that’s ok.
Oh my! I loved Hades! I can’t wait to read more of him. That cliffhanger was crazy. Persephone was so sheltered, but that only seemed to make her want Hades more. Hades is definitely the antihero that we hate to love.
Amelia Wilde is a genius. This is my second time reading King of Shadows and it literally couldn’t be better! I have never read a modern Greek mythology book before this, but I truly believe it is done perfectly.
I am obsessed with Hades, yes OBSESSED! His voice is outstanding. He has so many layers it is hard to pinpoint which is my favorite but I love when he straddles the line between his dark and Persephone’s light. He may be cruel and demanding but he’s beautiful in all his forms. He pretends from the very first moment that he meets Persephone that their fate wasn’t sealed before she was even born all while he feels this new emotion growing in his soul.
Persephone is sheltered and naïve probably because she has been controlled since her birth. Her mother, Demeter, doesn’t seem to understand Persephone’s need to be free and so she is forced to do the unthinkable, escape the only life she knows.
Twists and fate are etched into this story from the start. There is not one chapter I didn’t love. Amelia has the best detail and characters that makes it impossible not to be completely entranced. The mountain is the fortress, The Underworld, where both Hades and Persephone discover a need for each other that is so powerful that it shines like the diamonds Hades supplies. There are secrets and deceit so deep that the only way to break them is by welcoming the dark. Hades and Persephone are perfect for each other and their chemistry is everything. Amelia truly brings the hear in this powerful story that is consuming in it’s perfection.
“He’s not the sun, and he’s not the moon. He is total darkness, a place no light can touch.”
Persephone leads a sheltered, captive life because her mother insists that Luther Hades is a terrifying monster if she so much passes the fence. Curiosity and a little trick lure her out, and she is thrown right into the monster’s lair. It’s dark, it’s suspenseful, breathtakingly erotic, and I was mesmerized by the intensity and the slow transformation, until eye popping surprises push your heart to your throat and leave you with your jaw dropped and wanting to dive right in to the next book. It’s a dark, entrancing, hypnotic ride!!
“The wanting—the wanting could turn me inside out all on its own. If I couldn’t see him breathing, I would think he wasn’t a man at all. Something more. Something darker. Something that could consume me. Something that already has.”
I seriously love this retelling of the Hades and Persephone story. It is dark and hot, thrilling and sexy. The imagery is vivid. The characters are addictive. The story twists and turns, drawing you in deeper. And there’s a library. A wonderful library. I can’t wait to fall into the next book in the series, Summer Queen.
Amazingly intense!!! I love the story of Persephone and Hades and I am always looking for re-telling of their tale! Ameila Wilde did not disappoint with this updated dark re-telling!!!! You will be left on the edge of your seat with every page turn to see what Hades will do next! This book has everything that you need from captivating dark scenes, to intriguing intense ones! I was sucked into this story from the first page!! The ending will leave your mind blown!!!
Wonderful Read! I enjoy the possessive alpha male and the untouched, vulnerable, inexperienced virgin. I always enjoy a book of self discovery and this seems to apply to both characters. There’s a sad part at the end along with the cliffhanger. I enjoy the slow heat buildup.
This book is well written and a little different than I’m used to but I’m thoroughly enjoying it.
King of Shadows – (King of Shadows Series) – Amelia Wilde
Every now and again I stumble on a book only to find out it is part of a series and that, probably every book in that series will have some kind of darkness in them. In this case these three books take you from beginning to middle to ending and with each story everything you need to know comes to light, all in good time.
King of Shadows is the first book in the series. This begins the dark love story of Hades and Persephone
This is not the Greek myth story rather it is the dark story of a man (Hades) who lives his life in darkness yet the one thing he craves is the light that owning Persephone will bring him.
Hades is older than she is, hence his actions and his ability to think ahead. Persephone is younger, naive and really except for a few short years away at school a babe in the eyes of the deep dark world that swirls around her. She does not have one clue, but eventually she will know the entire story and you need to keep your eyes open when the mature and worldly Persephone appears, because she is a tough cookie.
If you enjoy dark stories, if you enjoy a good amount of sexual tension between the dark hero and the heroine, if you like to unravel stories and try to figure out which way it is going and when might it explode, you will enjoy King of Shadows.
Again I say, have the next book on hand to start, Summer Queen because what clues have been left should start to make sense in the next book and then there are always the new clues to find that will take you into book 3.
King of Shadows by Amelia Wild is the tale of Luther Hades, who is the king of the underworld, and Persephone, an innocent who begs mercy from Hades for the boy she met. This well written and compulsive read will keep you immersed in the well developed characters and the complex plot with intense emotions, intrigue, sizzling chemistry, and dark romance. I highly recommend this addictive retelling of a mythological tale with a modern twist.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Persephone has been kept innocent and sheltered from rest of the world, but she is over her overprotective mother keeping her hidden away (She is 22 after all), and she plots her escape. She falls into the hands of a dark and dangerous man Luther Hades, who she has been taught to fear. Will he bring her the nightmares, her mother has whispered in her ears all these years? Or was her mother telling her lies? I loved this first book, Persephone might have been sheltered, but she is interesting and determine, and I loved reading the next books in the series too (because you don’t have to wait for your answers now, seeing they are all out).
I love Hades/Persephone myth stories. Ms. Wilde made this one of my favorites. It had everything you would expect with so much more you don’t. I can’t wait to read the rest of this series.
What have I just finished reading and I mean this in the best of ways!!! This was a little dark story about Luther Hades and Persephone. I was captured immediately with these characters and what a dark alpha Luther was had my heart swooning. The pace was quick, the steam was HOT and I am diving in immediately to book 2 right now as I need more.
I love modern day retellings of mythological stories and this is one of the best! The author’s description of Hades and Persephone brought them to life for me. Hades is a dark, intense, sexy character that Persephone’s mother warned her about. Persephone lived a sheltered life and her innocence was everything Hades never knew he wanted. This is a captivating story told in duo POV’s and ends in a cliffhanger that left me desperate for the next book.
I got this book after it was highly recommended by a book whore friend(you know it’s you Serena), and I was NOT disappointed.
I was sucked in from the very first chapter. There’s intrigue, of course there’s curiosity and desire. I’m a masochist myself so when Persephone’s mom told her that Hades is a bad man, I wanted Persephone to find out why her mom would say that. And Hades is a bad, bad man. In both good ways and bad.
Persephone has been sheltered by her mother her entire life, to the point that she hasn’t really left her mother’s property in her 20 years of life. So many things seemed so suspect, and you eventually find out why. Persephone ends up under Hades control, and she learns so much more about herself than she ever would have without him.
This book is a cliffhanger-just a warning. And it definitely leaves you wanting to dive right into the next book!
I loved this book, and can’t wait to read the next one!
I think there things that sucked me on the most was the unanswered questions. I know that there must be some underlying intrigue, and I’m going to keep reading to figure it out! What’s up with Hades? What’s going on with Zeus and Demeter and what business and there are so many questions!
King of Shadows is first Amelia Wilde book and OMFG it will not be my last!!!
This story is a retelling of Hades and Persephone. Luther Hades is dominating and hot AF! Persephone is an innocent and has been protected by outside evil. This just makes her want to see the world. Her wish is almost granted except she ends of in the hands of Hades. Talk about off the charts chemistry!! I thought my kindle was going to catch fire!!
All my boxes were checked with King of Shadows….
Age gap
Angsty
Intriguing
Hot and steamy
Yes, this does end in a cliffhanger and I can’t wait to read the next book!!!
