The man I fell in love with is a f-cking liar… I don’t have much time to reveal all the details, but I will say this: The “Woman disappears after wedding” and “Woman flees after honeymoon” headlines are lying.I’m not missing.I didn’t run away after my wedding.I would’ve never run away right after our amazing honeymoon. My husband has taken me.No, correction: He’s kidnapped me because he claims … me.
No, correction: He’s kidnapped me because he claims that “its what’s best.” That I’m a mere pawn in his twisted game of chess.
Despite the fact that my heart is still tethered to his, or the fact that he’s still the most gorgeous and beautiful man I’ve ever met in my life (he can still make me wet with a single sentence), I have to focus on getting away from him.
I have to accept that he’s no longer the man I fell in love with.
He’s the king of lies…
King of Lies is the first episode in the Empire of Lies series.
more
King of Lies was an intense read that flipped back and forth between the past and the presence.
Meredith has a past as well as a secret life. She was born with a silver spoon in her mouth but has decided to work her dream job at Vogue rather than live off her family money. She is desperate for love and a real connection but can she find that on Tinder?
In comes Michael, who seems too perfect to be true and he sweeps her off her feet.
This story was interesting and intriguing.
The first book hooked me and I read the trilogy in 2 days.
What I liked about the three books
1. Books are Written in Whitney Gs signature protagonists— written in the first person.
The relationship had its ups and down but the considering bizarre circumstances, their interaction sizzled. The dialogue was funny.
2. A hit man is trying not to complete the job but has great difficulty doing it. He fell in love with her.
3. Heroine has a mild case of Stockholm syndrome
So amazing!!
Is there any trope/genre that this author can’t write??? This book started out with all the smoldering swoon i expected but then veered off into total suspense. That ending made me actually gasp and now I don’t know how I’m going to survive the wait until book 2!!
“I ask what kind of work they do, their real name, what they like to do on the weekends.”
“I’m in the entertainment business and I own a lot of companies in the city.” he said. “My name is Micheal Anderson, and I like to play chess. I also like to fuck.”
“Is that last line supposed to turn me on?”
“No,” he said. “Me staring at you from outside the window already did that. Did it not?”
Randomly ran across these books and devoured them. I’ve been a book funk for 2 months now. These are the first ones that have held my attention. I’m so glad I found them.
Well this was a page turning, exciting beginning to this three book series!
Firstly, the story starts off in the now and then winds back to the beginning to explain how the now happens.
Meredith is looking for a much needed night of hot sex, on Tinder. Well it’s not called the booty call app for nothing and it turns out that it can deliver her just what she wants.
The Devil turns out to be the hottest sexual experience she has ever had and a one night stand turns into a repeat edition. For weeks.
However, Michael is hiding the truth from her. Meredith has no idea that the truth could kill her, in more ways than one.
I cannot wait to read more of this trilogy because I need to know what happens to Meredith.
Another fabulous read from Whitney G 🙂
Always, always love everything Whitney G. writes!
This storyline is so different from her other tropes, and I loved it. It has a touch of humor, lots of very hot love scenes and an unexpected cliffhanger!!
I already have the other books, ready for me to read!!
This series started off with a bang! This is a different departure for her, apparently she needs to keep bringing it. Im lucky all 3 books are out. Off to book two! Whitney G books.
Meredith and Michael, she is this naive woman who always chose the wrong guy, he’s somewhat mysterious. The story is told in the dual POV and has a lot of twist and turns until the jaw dropping moment in the story. It is different from anything Whitney G ever wrote but I love where this story will takes us. Can’t wait for the next book in this series. I honestly volunteered to review this arc.
Oh my gosh! This book is delicious and dark and it totally blew my mind before dropping me off one serious cliff!
’The man I married no longer exists. The king of my heart is long gone, and he wears a new name. He’s the king of lies.’
With a few time jumps, we meet Meredith and learn of her unsuccessful Tinder dates/hookups. When Michael interrupts one such date, this has all the makings for a wonderfully, sexy rom-com. Except that’s not what we get. Things take a decidedly darker turn and the Whitney G world as we’ve always known it is shot to smithereens. And holy heck, was it wild and exhilarating!
This kept me turning pages as fast as I could. Being the first of a trilogy, it’s very short but rich with twists and turns as it drops little nuggets along the way. The next book is to release pretty soon, I believe. So I’m doing my hardest to be patient, but that cliffhanger doesn’t help any. I want book 2, Queen of Lies and I want it now!
This short story is the first book in the Empire of Lies Trilogy, a first Dark Romantic Suspense from Whitney G. Wow! We really need more Romantic Suspense from her! Meredith and Michael’s story is captivating! They are two opposites attract. Meredith is feisty, and pretty, but a little naive and reckless. Michael is ruthless, dark, and very intriguing. They share an instant attraction, and a great chemistry. The supporting characters are great. I love Gillian, Meredith’s best friend. Trevor, Michael’s brother is also an intriguing character. The storyline has it all!: fun, suspenseful, fast-paced, gripping, thrilling, intriguing, and filled with danger, mystery and twists and turns. The story ends with a big cliffhanger, and I’m looking forward for the next installment, Queen of Lies. I can’t wait to know more about these characters. I truly loved it!
OMG! This first book will grab you from the first page and keep you in the edge of your seat the whole way thru it!! I was so engrossed in Meredith and Michael’s story as it unfolded that I couldn’t put my kindle down!
The chemistry between the two was amazing and as more and more was revealed, I began to understand and figure out some things for myself. I am so excited to read the next book, Queen of Lies, and see what is in store for this couple! There are enemies in unlikely places that need to be taken care of and secrets that Michael is hiding. What will happen when these come to light? This is an amazing new series that I am so excited to embark on! FIVE EXCITING STARS
Michael think he is untouchable up to the day he actually meets Meredith. A subject of one of his jobs. He watches and watches. Then they meet and soon both are in lust and act upon it. But Michael is falling for her. Will he do his job.
This review is for all 3 books, since I can’t really recall where one ends, and the others begin.
First off, Michael was hot AF, even though he had some serious issues. It seemed like it would be easy to not like him, but for me it was quite the opposite. Guess it’s that bad boy attraction. Meredith has her own issues, too.
The way Michael and Meredith meet and subsequently “date” seems like this story is going to be a romantic comedy; something similar to some of Whitney’s other books. That isn’t the case, but that’s all I’ll say.
This story has a lot of twists and unexpected turns. Although the content was kind of heavy, the story read fairly light and quick. Some of the events are a bit far fetched, but that’s what makes it a good story. Romance reading is pure fantasy for me, and I suspend reality when I dive into a story. As you get to know Michael, you realize you don’t really know him. He’s not easily forgettable, that’s for certain.
This series is definitely different from what Whitney usually writes about. It was a passion project she wrote for herself, and I really enjoyed it. I love her other books, but I hope she continues to get out of her box with different material like this.
I’m screaming ” I knew it!”at the end of the book
A little predictable for the end of this first book but still the why is still a big guess. Can’t wait to read the next installment.
For the characters, I understand Meredith’s pain loosing her mom and the way she try to Cope. Maybe that’s why the way Michael charm her got her easy. For me personally his way is too charming to be true. Like they said, something too good to be true, usually are too good to be true.
And that’s Michael.
I still can’t put my hand on what exactly he do in the underworld. One second he’s the villain. The next, he’s cleaning out the world from one more garbage.
I need more pf their detail steamy. sue me for loving them in details
For me in those details I see and feel the characters feelings. The way it changes. The way they connect. I need to feel what Meredith feel when she falls in love with Michael through out all the steamy nights they spend together.
Very intriguing start to what seems will be an interesting story. Very short, more like a serial series, but I’m intrigued to see where the story goes. I had a feeling about the twist at the end and I’m curious to see what Michael is going to do. Nice start.
Actual rating: 2.5 stars
So… It’s a serial and the first one is free (apparently not on this website, again). Eventually there will be the “full series” book I saw on the placeholder cover. If serials are not your thing, you might want to wait for that.
Cliffhanger ending, but I didn’t mind it too much. It was actually predictable.
There’s nothing wrong with the new genre, it’s actually the kind of dark romance I like to read. I’m really glad about that. She didn’t overdo it.
However, my main problem were the main characters… Especially the heroine. Here, WG did overdo it. The hero wasn’t better, but still, nothing compared to the heroine. It’s a pity, I wish I liked them more.
p.s. Apparently heroine’s bff is Gillian from ‘Turbulence’ (I’m never using the “new” title or that horrible “new” cover) and I totally forgot about her, lol, but it was cute to see them in the future.
I really enjoyed this dark romance. I love the direction that this is going and really love Michael even if he is pretty dark. Ok like super dark. He says he isn’t book boyfriend material but I’m not so sure. Time will tell as I continue with this series.
(3.8 stars) Meredith Thatchwood has run from her husband. Michael Anderson isn’t who she thought he was. Cold, ruthless, manipulative and the king of liars. This is a short serial that ends on a cliffhanger. It’s told from past and present to see how they first met. An interesting start for this seemingly darkish story. Nothing is what it seems in this one. A little slow to start for me but I’m looking forward to see what happens from that ending. Told in dual POV
4.5 STARS
WOW. I didn’t see it coming!
I love Whitney’s writing, and I felt really intrigued with this trilogy.
Let me tell you, ladies, King of Lies may be a novella, but I was totally hooked, from the beginning.
It’s sexy, edgy and dark, and I loved every minute of it.
And the ending… Wow… I can’t wait to put my hands on Queen of Lies, and I have a feeling the author has so much more lies and twists in store for us!
Keeping the suspense with a novella was no easy challenge, but Whitney did an amazing job!
