When flying monsters break through the veil into her world, Mackenzie Scott has nothing left to lose. Her brother has been taken, her future has vanished, and all that remains is a desperate need for revenge. After discovering the breach the creatures used as a gateway, Mackenzie devises a plan to stop them, whatever the cost.
When she finds an injured stranger in the street, he just might be … might be the key she needs to succeed. What Mackenzie doesn’t know is that this stranger isn’t the helpless boy he appears to be. He’s one of the monsters. And he’s got plans of his own.
Thrown into a dying city in another realm, Mackenzie is powerless to get back. With the gateway closing, time is not on her side. But the stranger is, and if they can escape execution, this girl and her monster might be able to save both their worlds.

I can’t think of a thing that I liked about this book. I did finish it though. There have been several that I haven’t been able to finish.
A good read in as far as it being science fiction, lots of flying monsters and maybe the end of humanity on earth. A pretty wild concept this reaping of souls from our world to save another. You have to be a science fiction enthusiast to enjoy this story.
Interesting spin on the concept of parallel dimensions where the fey may be involved. Cool tie in but, the plot was a bit transparent. Has potential for future books. Characters were not quite as developed in this first book. While entertaining, I’ll be looking for more fleshing out in the next book.
I had a little trouble connecting with this story. It is written well from Mackenzie and Hunters view. Yet even after finishing this first book I am not sure I understand the why and how of the reaping.
King of Ash and Bone story started off slow.
The story got better, things became really interesting, and the end was a big nothing.
I still don’t know what happened and why. .
This was an empty read.
Confusing. Much less interesting than it appeared. Couldn’t finish.
Read this quite awhile back, loved the characters
Great world building, love reading supernatural stories! They take me away from everyday life and give a paradigm shift to our reality!
Could not put this down. A waking nightmare of loss and love for brave young woman. I am haunted by this story.
Good YA read. Okay, i read this about a year ago. So, lets get to it. Meet McKenzie and her brother Riley. They are caught in a storm, okay, they are in their house, but there is a storm. This is not the normal storm. In the morning they see their house is damaged, but all around are demolished. Weirdness continues, there are monsters.
What they are, and where they come from is what the story is all about. McKenzie’s actions, Riley’s actions all support the story about where they are from. Oh yeah, let’s not forget, the brother and sister are separated, she saves a young man and relationships are built.
One thing i didn’t like. The story is continued.
It was just ok. Not going to read the next one.
I couldn’t get into this book so I don’t think it’s fair to rate it
Exceptional put together plot makes for easy reading
I love the books I recommend it for teens and adults but its a good book
Well written ,imaginative, exciting . I hate when I finish reading s book and the have to go buy the next one. I have also finished the next one and it was worth the money. I look forward to reading other books by this author.
The story is original and the world building is good. This is an interesting take on a post apocalyptic world, where a gateway opens to collect souls to keep the second world running and the humans try to fight them off. Then things get complicated when a human befriends a “monster”. I would have liked for the characters to have a little… just… more, but I can say that they are realistically driven by their own motivators all throughout the story. The writing and dialogue is well done. I am interested in checking out the sequel.
I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
.I enjoyed reading this book. It is fast, readable and original.
