Absolutely loved this dark page turner from KL Donn. King is the man.
Dark romance is normally not a favorite type of read for me, but if done right, it is oh so good! King is the king of the mafia, he is ruthless, he is an anti-hero, and when he wants something, he will get it. And what he wanted was Lilith. Lilith has had a tough life, she’s made decisions that she regrets and one of those decisions has put herself in King’s path. When she is finally caught, she was resigned to not leaving alive.
I loved their story. Lilith was broken and seen as weak, but you find her so much stronger than realized. King saw this strength in her and knew she was meant to be his queen. Their chemistry was off the charts hot! King’s possessiveness of Lilith is absolute, he would do anything for her and his ways of doing things for her was ruthless and kind of brutal, but not without reasons. When Lilith is taken, all hell breaks loose. Lots of twists and turns in this story, it definitely keeps you on your toes.
Overall, I really enjoyed this story, there are some trigger moments so one needs to be prepared. The secondary characters are fascinating and looking forward to their stories.
Okay, so that was a very different book. There are very few times when I am so affected by a book that I feel the need to write a lengthy review. This book has me so frustrated. I can see why others love this book, it is quick, simple and easy to read. It just had too many inconsistencies.
For me, the longer I read this book the more I disliked it. It was recommended it by quite a few people in a mafia book group I belong to. It got good reviews so I gave it a try. I tried the sample and found it interesting, albeit short, it was deceiving. This book is not for me, I am so past frustrated with it.
Lets start with the over all book and then I will explain a few issues in more detail. The story it was well written, flows well and there were no spelling/grammar/editing errors that I could find. It did, however; come across as an unfinished book, like an outline. It is so fast there are no details, no build up. The story just jumps into what feels like the middle and ends with no flair. I could not connect with any character because I know nothing about them. How old are they? What do they look like? What city are we in? I need basic info to help build the story and to connect my emotions.
There are contradictory personality traits throughout this book. For example: in the beginning chapter King is hard and determined to break Lilith with pain; then in every chapter that follows he is soft and sweet, almost kid like to her. Or, how about, King loves Lilith so much and so hard he is willing to torture her abuser… until he gets a phone call, then he just walks away.
Lilith; I have so much to say about her. Lilith acts like she is 13 years old, I swear! She gas mood swings, tries to hide behind a grown man, she askes stupid questions (TSTL), she’s insecure and whiney.
King is written as a strong aggressive man, but his is so far from alpha. He is almost bi-polar in his demands. I dislike him and cannot understand him at all. I really don’t care if he gets a HEA. There is one point in the story where he is setting in front of his advisors completely naked; just carrying on like it is just another day.
And don’t get me started on those other men… The way Atticus, Luther, Carver and Castiel act, you would think that they all love and have claimed Lilith. There is little emotional distinction between the way they act towards her and how King does. This could very easily be a reverse haram story.
After all of that, I still have a lot of questions. I am completely unsatisfied with thus story. I might read more from this author, I just don’t know about this series.
Lilith Riley isn’t a woman who is happy with her life. King Adair is a man of authority. They have an interesting beginning. It hooked me in because they are polar opposites. He is very forthcoming in what he expects.
This is a book with no excuses, not for the timid or shy, and probably not what you might expect. But if you’re up to the challenge you might just enjoy it as much as I did. Then your decision becomes whether you’re going to read this in one sitting. I wanted to but that’s not possible when you’re at work.
Our author shows the violence of their world but she’s good to her readers by not getting too graphic. You might get the shivers but nothing more. It doesn’t overtake the story but helps move the scenes along. There were a couple of times that the author had me chuckling and that was especially true when it came to the ending. I’m sure that I’ll be somewhere in line happily waiting for the next installment.
I was not compensated nor was I required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

I need more of the Adair Empire series. KL Donn did a amazing job on this new series.
Lilith made a deal with the devil. She makes a choice knowing exactly what it will end up costing her. When it was time to pay, she knew her end was near and she was willing to accept it with as much grace as possible. What she never expected was to find King Adair on his knees offering her his kingdom.
King Adair rules his city. He’s ruthless and feared by anyone who knows his name. He’s been watching Lilith, however and decides he will make her his queen. He knows there is more to her than she shows the world, and he plans on having it all. He’ll break her to make her into the woman he knows she is capable of being . . . one that can rule by his side.
A man like King always has enemies, however, and this time, they’ve taken aim at the one thing he cares about . . . Lilith. Now it’s up to King and the men who stood beside him as he built his kingdom to find Lilith and bring her home while destroying everything in their way.
KL Donn has stepped completely out of her box to provide readers with a deliciously dark, sinfully sexy tantalizing tale. King was an amazing journey into the criminal underworld where men kill and torture to get what they want and rule through fear and intimidation. King Adair knows what he wants and has no issue doing whatever it takes to get it. He has surrounded himself with others who follow his orders and commands and thrive in his darkness.
Even though Lilith seems to have a bit of light in her, she immediately fits into this new world she finds herself in and thrives with the knowledge that she is wanted and cared for by King and his associates. King and his butchering band of associates are anti-heros with their own set of standards and morals they adhere to. I was thrilled to take this journey with KL and can’t wait to see what she has in store for King’s right hand men – Luther Atticus, Carver and Castiel. Long live the King and his Queen! 5 stars!
Oh my dayz. This is my first read by this author and talk about starting off with a bang. I went to bed tonight to read a chapter or two and read the book. Yes it’s so so good.
King is the king of the Adair Empire. He’s the king of the mafia. When he sees Lilith he realises she is what he needs, what he wants. These two are a force to be reckoned with. Lilith has been through so much yet she is such a strong feisty character. King gets what he wants. He’s a strong alpha character and I love how we got a glimpse of his softer side.
This was an awesome read. I’m really hoping we don’t have to wait too long to read more of the Adair Empire.
