Even better than the first!
I read this as soon as I was done with book one in the series. I needed to know what happened next.
This book has not one, but two, villains, and it’s hard to decide which is more sinister. And the usual band of Internet trolls are still at work. It’s a nail-biting thrill ride trying to anticipate what’s going to happen next and how Gwen and her family will get through it.
I love how the stakes are higher, the problems more complex, the danger more perilous. This is everything a sequel should be but seldom is.
I give this novel an easy five stars and am already onto the next one.
This was the second book in the still house lake series and I love how the author put in the four different point of views. Normally I can’t stand the way books are wrote like that but this author executed it so well it was like it flowed naturally. My favorite point of view was Lanny and Connors. They have a way of pulling you into the story and the emotion they feel. The one person I don’t care for is Gwen she is down right annoying. I find that the author repeats herself when Gwen is speaking she becomes over descriptive. But the dark twisted story-line is well worth the read in the end. Just wish I could feel it was a 5 star read but it just wasn’t there.
Book two of Rachel Caine’s Stillhouse Lake series was even better than the first! Once again, I chose the audio version to listen to Killman Creek and it had me captivated from the start. There were four narrators and they were all perfect. In this book, serial killer Melvin Royal, Gwen’s ex-husband, has broken out of prison and she must use everything she has in her bag of tricks to destroy him.
Gwen Proctor is one major bad-ass, gun-toting momma who will stop at nothing to protect her children. Once again, they are in danger and she must leave them with friends while she and Sam Cade leave to go hunting for the killer. Through manipulations and mistrusts, Gwen’s life is soon turned upside down and she must depend on herself to annihilate the monster.
This was an edge-of-your-seat, chilling, and nerve-wracking installment of the series. I recommend it to anyone who loves a good suspense-thriller read. I have already moved on to the next book, Wolfhunter River, another excellent addition to the series. I give Killman Creek five heart-stopping stars!
Once again Rachel has written an absolutely stunning book. This is the second in a series and I would HIGHLY recommend reading the first before you read this one. The first book was a ferocious debut for this series and it will forever be one of my favorites. But Killman Creek has only upped the ante for the third in the series coming soon!
We meet Gwen Proctor again with her two children Lanny and Connor who are on the run from her murderous ex husband. After the findings of a local policeman that had taken the steps to follow after her husband kidnapped her children she knew she had to leave Stillhouse Lake.
Along with Gwen and her children Sam Cade is along to help her as much as he can with his FBI friend Mike Lustig. Both men prove to be a huge promising of help for Gwen and her kids. Not only do they help her they also prove to her that you can’t always trust everyone when videos show up of her helping Melvin while he is carrying Sams sister into their house.
While these videos are released Javier and Kezia who was also in the last book keep the children out of the way in order to keep them safe. But they don’t know just how much Connor is involved with his father.
Lanny and Connor want nothing more than to be safe in a home with their mother. Connor still has a penchant for his dad that he hopes will somehow come true. He still thinks Melvin can be a good guy to him even if all he has ever heard is the sugar coated version that he’s a monster. When Connor is slipped a phone from Lancel Graham that kidnapped him he is told that he isn’t supposed to tell anyone he has it and he can’t contact his dad at any time.
While his mother is away he can’t help but want to get in contact with his dad. He wants that love that he craves so badly from a male figure. He wants to believe his dad is nothing more than a lie that he has been told. But once he starts he can’t stop. And that leads to so much more than he ever realized.
This book was so beyond explosive within the action, layers of mind games, truth and lies. Emotion was ever present in every move that Gwen made because she knew she couldn’t lose her children. That was her kryptonite. And for good reason. They were all she had left that was true in the aftermath of her ex husband and the monstrosity that he was behind closed doors.
Gwen is such an amazing characters who is no holds bar and will risk her life to save her children. She refuses to go down without a fight and you have to give her major props as a parent and person for doing what she does. Yes at times she makes some rash decisions. But all with good reasoning. She literally goes through the ringer with every emotion in this book.
At times she questions everything. But she is nothing but human at the end of the day. Super by all means. But she is still human.
There was nothing that I didn’t love about this book. I had so many feels, cringes, heartbreak and at times anger. But there is nothing better than a book that can elicit every emotion from you within the written pages. And this book is EVERYTHING.
An absolutely stunning sequel that held me in thrall even more than the first book, which is not an easy feat to accomplish. There was an artful melding of twisted psychological thrills and nail-biting suspense that made this story the ultimate page-turner. I can’t wait for the third in this series to be available!
Loved the second book in the Stillhouse Lake series! Rachel Caine has been added to my list of “auto-buy” authors. I’m counting down the days to the next book in this series!
This is my least favorite of the series so far. I hated the way some people treated Gwen, and the conclusions some jumped to, so I was angry throughout most of this book. But I still recommend it because it’s necessary to get through and onto book three, which was really good, and book four, which was fantastic. 🙂
Expect a late night! Very suspenseful.
Killman Creek by Rachel Caine
Book 2 in the Stillhouse Lake series. Thriller. Best to read Stillhouse Lake first.
Gwen moved with her children to Stillhouse Lake hoping to get away from the notoriety of her serial killer ex husband. When he escaped from prison, all sense of safety is gone and the family is in protection mode.
Absalom used to be an anonymous helpful source but trust is hard to come by for Gwen when she is being threatened.
Gwen and Sam are hunting for Melvin. The risks are increased when video clips show the unimaginable.
Jaw hanging intensity. Non stop tension and intrigue. Wow.
I loved this book for the thriller aspect and felt for Gwen when her closest allies had to question her innocence. Fantastic.
THIS REVIEW IS FOR BOTH THE AUDIOBOOK AND EBOOK VERSIONS
The narration was absolutely wonderful, it really helps pull you into the story. The book was well written and kept you on edge as well. Great characters and intensity. So very sick and twisted. Loved the end and anxious to see how the next book goes. I recommend this book.
Everything gets turned around in the second book from Still house lake! This one involves her children more and everyone begins to doubt Gwen.
You do not have to read the first book to enjoy this one but it is more so. This book picks up where the last one left off…Gwen Proctor’s serial killer ex-husband has escaped from prison. Now Gwen and her neighbor, Sam Cade, team up to find Melvin Royal. Along the way, trust is tried and Gwen may nit survive Melvin’s trap. This one evokes fear, tears and a great deal of anger…it’s excellent!!! Now on to the next book!
I didn’t like this book as much as the first book. I did like how the chapters were focused from the viewpoint of each character. But I felt too much time was spent on Gwen (Gina) and her endless ramblings. I would have liked more written about some of the places they found and the people there instead of just Gwen. I don’t feel this story was as believable as Stillhouse Lake #1. Killman Creek just seemed to be all over the place.
Having said that, it was still a good read. I’m hoping the next in the series is written more along the lines of Stillhouse Lake.
FOREWARNING: Some imagery may be disturbing for some to read
***Minor spoilers ahead***
Wow! It’s scary to think of the possibility that there truly is people like Melvin put in the world. He’s completely deranged.
The only thing that I actually took issue with was the whole doctored video recordings. The idea Mike might believe is acceptable, but the kids, Javier, Kezia and Sam is messed up. They know Gwen and should give her the benefit of the doubt. Otherwise loved it! Looking forward to the next installment.
I read Stillhouse Lake and really enjoyed it. But this one actually had me so invested in the two main characters that I cried. Don’t know that I would technically classify it as a tear jerker, I just get really invested in characters. One reason I love sequels. Great book. <3
The adrenaline is ramped up in this sequel to Stillhouse Lake. Even more suspenseful than the last one!
Not quite as good as the first one in my opinion, but definitely a good read for those who enjoy psychological suspense/thriller/mystery.
This is the second book in the series, and frankly, I didn’t much like it. I listened intently, but it was so dark, so disturbing-with no sliver of light or hope- that I decided that it was too much. If you know my books or my reviews, you might already know that the darkness doesn’t bother me–however- it needs to be laced with hope. If I read a book that just gets darker and more and more depraved and depressing, I just can’t.
In this book Her ex-husband, the serial killer is on the loose. If things were dark the first time, they are pitch black this time. You need to light a flashlight to get around in this one yall. It just gets sicker as the book goes on and it was a major turn off for me. I won’t be reading the rest of the series.
A fantastic sequel, and even better than the first book! I loved the different POVs, it added more tension and depth to the story as we see how each character deals with the aftermath of book one.
Once again, there’s non-stop action that keeps you turning the pages as you want to know what happens next. It’s full of twists and surprises, and has you rooting for all the characters as revelations are made and secrets come out.
I highly recommend this series. Now on to book 3!
I couldn’t put it down…
