Another day, another dead woman in Ellison Russell’s study.Only this one claimed to be Mrs. Anarchy Jones. As Ellison juggles mothers, daughter, unhappy wives, and near-miss murder attempts, one thing is clear—someone will go to any lengths to hide the truth. Can Ellison and Anarchy catch a killer before the body count rises? Or will Ellison be the next corpse in the study?
I love Julie Mulhern’s Country Club Murders series. Killer Queen is the eleventh in the series and it just keeps getting better. Ellison Russell, dead bodies and hunky Detective Anarchy Jones…a combination that continues to make it hard to put the book down. This time Ellison isn’t home and a stranger stating she’s Mrs. Anarchy Jones is waiting for her. When she gets home, the woman is dead. Shortly after that, she’s walking Max and someone tries to run her down. While all this is going on, Anarchy’s mother shows up. Oh boy! Between her and Ellison’s mother trying to break the two of them up, Anarchy has other ideas. This is a very well thought out plot with great characters, some laughter, romance and definitely mystery right to the end. The dynamics between Ellison, her daughter Grace and her Mother are always fun to follow. This series is set in the 70’s with no cell phones, but lots of coffee. And what about Detective Anarchy Jones for her love interest? The book ends with a marriage proposal. Did she accept? Read it and find out. Looking forward to the next one.
Oh! Wow! So Awesome! Julie Mulhern does it again for the 11th time with Killer Queen. The Country Club Murders series has been hit after hit and Killer Queen may be the biggest winner of all.
This audiobook series should come with a huge warning….you will laugh out loud repeatedly while listening to this book so if listening in public be cautious of when you take a drink! Seriously, I absolutely love this series and while I am sure the books are great, this series is a must listen series for me as the narrator does an excellent job of bringing the characters to life and giving their personalities that little extra oomph of greatness! The 70’s have never been so much fun and it is fun to read/hear about landmark KC locations that I remember from my youth. I’m only sad that I have finished the book and now must wait for the next to be available!
I love Julie Mulhern’s Country Club Murder series. She kills about 2 people per book and still manages to have you laugh out loud. The thoughts going on in the protagonist’s head are nothing short of hilarious at times. The writer also touches in levels of family dysfunction most people were unaware on in the time period she writes about. If this is the last book, I will truly miss Ellison Walford Russell – as her mother calls her.
The entire series is delightful. Funny, original, worth waiting for each new volume.
Killer Queen is the latest (and eleventh) installment in Julie Mulhern’s Country Club Mystery series, and it’s just as good as its predecessors. Ellison finds another body—in her own house. Worse, the dead woman had introduced herself to housekeeper Aggie as Mrs. Anarchy Jones. Since Anarchy has no Mrs, not even an ex, it takes a while to figure out who the dead woman is, as well as her connection to Kansas City country club society. But of course there is one. In fact there are so many connections that Ellison can’t find one suspect who had motive, means, and opportunity at the same time.
Ellison’s supporting cast is here—her daughter Grace, her friends Libba and Jinx and the rest of the bridge-playing gals, and her parents. And—terrifying—Anarchy’s mother. Kansas City in the early 70s, when computers and cell phones dominated no one’s life, also plays its part.
I love this series. Next one arrives in February—I’ll be waiting.
This whole series is charming.
The main character, through whose eyes you see everything, is a winning and admirable person, which makes it easy to root for her.
I look forward to more entries with great anticipation!
KILLER QUEEN (A Country Club Murder Book # 11) by Julie Mulhern is by far the best book in the Series to date! This book may be read as a stand alone but it really should not be. It needs to be read in the order in which it is written to truly understand and appreciate the many details and nuances contained within. Also, the reader needs to be prepared to block out a period of time to be able to read it from first page to last page in one sitting. Yes! It is that good! It is going to distract you from whatever else you may have going on in your life.
Mulhern starts this book off with an opening sequence that will grab your attention on so many levels. Her beloved characters Ellison Russell and her boyfriend, Detective Anarchy Jones are preparing to leave for a trip to Italy in just a matter of hours. Ellison comes in from running errands and her loyal, devoted Aggie meets her with a downtrodden look on her face. Ellison quickly realizes her trip to Italy is vanishing before her eyes! She asks Aggie what is wrong but nothing, NOTHING, could prepare her for Aggie’s answer: “There is a woman in the Study to see you and her name is Mrs. Anarchy Jones.” As Ellison regains her composure, she enters the Study and rounds the chair where the woman is sitting. Ellison starts talking to her and that’s when she notices it—the woman’s head is drooping over to the side and as Ellison moves closer, she notices the woman’s lips were terribly contorted and her face was swollen. As if that wasn’t enough, the woman was DEAD! Everyone knows how Ellison’s Mother hates it when Ellison finds another DEAD BODY and particularly when she finds the body in the comfort of her own home!
With a beginning like that, readers have so many stingers to look forward to: 1) Max and his adopted wild, hoodlum pal Pansy who makes one of the greatest entrances of all times. Pansy is the Great Equalizer who puts everyone in their place! 2) Dueling Mothers — Is anyone ever good enough for your child? 3) As the old song says, “Who’s Cheating Who?” If Ellison didn’t have such a great network of friends, it would make her sleuthing much more difficult! 4) How much evil and the plotting of more evil is going on in this book? 5) Can True Love prevail even if it has its beginnings with a Funeral Visitation and a Shopping Spree at the Magnificent Mile?
This book has everything you could ask for — murder, mayhem, mystery, humor and love. Don’t miss it! Be sure you read it in order!
I love this series. This author writes with humor, has interesting characters, always a great plot that keeps you reading page after page. It’s a read in one sitting book because there isn’t a good place to take a break.
Ellison Russell comes home to find a dead woman in her study. She has been through this drill before, but this one identified herself to Aggie as Mrs. Anarchy Jones about 20 minutes ago and now she was dead. Worse her mother arrives before she can even call Anarchy. “Now strangers are coming to your house to die?”
Julie Mulhern is one of my favorite authors and her imagination continues to amaze me. She effortlessly takes readers back to the 1970s with no cell phones, avocado green appliances, and Ellison’s love affair with her Mr. Coffee.
The characters were strong in book 1, The Deep End, and they are still fresh and engaging in this 11th installment. The great thing is they continue to evolve and have plenty of room to grow.
Ms. Mulhern also knows how to serve up humor generously. The scene where Ellison’s and Anarchy’s mothers meet is absolutely priceless. I read most of this book during one of my chemo treatments and really tried to hold the laughter in but couldn’t help myself.
The author brings more than wonderful characters and fabulous humor, she also gives her readers an interesting and complex mystery with plenty of twists and turns. Killer Queen is no exception. Pop the cork on a bottle of Moët et Chandon or get your Mr. Coffee out and brew up a cup then sit back and enjoy Killer Queen.
