Another great description from Ashley and/or her team, so I don’t have a whole to add to the arc, but hopefully fill in some of the gaps. I liked this contribution to the Albaterra series the most since the first book (sorry Rex was my favorite 0:)), but this one only left me with one question … why was Lena attacked / targeted by the Novai? Was it just dumb luck? Don’t know and maybe it will be addressed in future editions.
Again, these are really pretty tame when it comes to adult language and intimacy scenes, although there can be a more blunt description included in a scene or so, I believe they are more semi-steamy. But there is plenty of violence (kidnapping, assault, death), so if you are offended by that, then this may not be the book for you.
Lena Devereaux is a life coach that has felt a little lost in her work lately so she travels to Albaterra in hopes of finding her desire / purpose. To her this is even more emphasized since she helps others find theirs’. She is roommates with Isabelle, and they have since become best friends. The book opens with Lena running through the woods with the feeling like she needed to run or die. Normally she loves Pentaba, as it reminds her of the bayou where she grew up, but not tonight. She runs into the area where her friend Isabelle is sitting up in a tree star-gazing. After they talk for a while, they hear an explosion and the Novai starting to screech which had been noticeably absent before this. The Novai colony is guarded and not too far from Lena’s and Isabelle’s colony the Polder Quarter, where Lena also has an office. They take off for the Quarter and Lena realizes that Isabelle is running the wrong way. She yells for her to turn around and before she can do anything else, she is attacked by a Novai, holding her down and screeching loudly in her face.
Khrel is the War Chief for the Pentaba region of Albaterra. He is out patrolling and checking on what was happening on the front lines with the Novai colony, as everyone is uneasy with their settlement. During their conversation, the Novai start screeching and a couple of explosions occur. He sends his warrior, Xam, to get others and then he is attacked by a Novai, whom he is forced to kill during their confrontation. He sees what happens after one passes and believes that this one could have long-term mental impact (I loved this particular scene … thanks for details!). His warriors Xam and Qula arrive back and Khrel tasks them to bring the dead Novai to their Elder, Sevani, so he can direct them in how he wants to proceed. Before they can leave, two human female screams ring out. Khrel orders them to take the Novai away before everyone sees him and he takes off in pursuit of the females’ screams.
When he arrives at the scene, Isabelle and Lena had managed to get the Novai off Lena once through several actions, including a good set of teeth. They wouldn’t have been able to hold him off much longer, as he had started to lunge side to side while on all fours and screeching. Fortunately Khrel showed up and was able to talk with the Novai. He got them started marching back to the Novai colony so the rogue could be placed back with his people, then the Novai screeched again and leapt toward the human female again … I am going to stop there so I don’t accidentally provide any spoilers, which is what really adds to this story.
