Keep You Safe by author Rona Halsall is a psychological thriller with suspense and intrigue. One evening Natalie is taken from her home to answer questions about a large amount of money which has been embezzled from a client at work. Her husband, Tom stands by and does nothing to help her. She has no proof or defense for her innocence because she has been living in a hazy existence since Harry was born. She has been very forgetful, and extremely fatigued and once she goes to prison she finds out why…she has been drugged since Harry’s birth and is addicted to narcotics!
Natalie has been in prison for three years for a crime she did not commit. Her baby son, Harry was taken from her and she has not seen him since she was imprisoned. Her husband filed for divorce and took Harry to his parents. Natalie’s mission to get Harry back will need to be carefully planned. She has been given the use of a holiday cottage for the summer in Connemara. Natalie is smart and considers her strategy for learning the truth of what has happened to her and she plots her way to protect her little boy from danger.
I enjoyed this book very much!

Thank you to NetGalley and the Publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.
What a fantastic and well written psychological thriller! I read this book in three sittings as the short ‘then and now’ chapters made this novel speed by.
The main character, Natalie, has come to the Isle of Man for one reason only, to find her son. With time running out in which Natalie must act, this novel has you clenching everything in the hope that she succeeds in her mission.
The ‘then’ chapters give the reader real insight into what Natalie has been through and how she’s overcome some of her bleakest hours, only to be faced with the bleakest of the bleakest.
If you enjoy a fast mover that leads to a heart stoping culmination of events, then give Keep You Safe a go.
The twist at the end surprised me.

Natalie is wrongly imprisoned for embezzlement, blood tests also reveal she is addicted to pain meds. Natalie doesn’t understand any of this because she doesn’t do drugs and has no memory of committing the crimes that she is accused of. She has been a bit out of sorts lately but she figures that is due to the stress of being a new mother. She ends up in prison and she starts to realize it must have been her husband Tom that set her up and had also been drugging her. All she can think of is getting her son Harry back when she gets out of prison. The story is told in the past and present day. When she gets out of prison she turns to her old friend Sasha to help her track down Tom and get her son Harry back. But can Natalie really trust Sasha? Is there anyone that she can trust? This story had some good twists and turns and I was surprised at the ending. I hope to read more by this author in the future.
I found KEEP YOU SAFE by Rona Halsall to be an engaging and well-paced book. Told primarily from character Natalie’s point of view, I enjoyed the switch between the present, where she is not only searching for her son, but running from people who have threatened her and her family’s lives, and the past, where we learn about how she ended up in prison serving time for a crime she claims she did not commit.
The author does a fine job of keeping up the tension throughout the book. Both in prison and outside, Natalie struggles in knowing who to trust. She can only rely on her wits; wits that her prison stint has helped her hone typically via unpleasant experiences. In fact, I quite enjoyed reading about time Natalie spent in prison. Her experiences inside shaped her and she certainly was not able to leave behind that life once outside.
One of my ‘buts’ with this story is that I guessed who the unknown narrator was much earlier than I would have preferred and this diluted part of the mystery for me. Also at times, I did feel the need to suspend belief with respect to some storylines. Having said all this, the book more than held my interest and I was happily turning the pages to find out what was going to happen next.
I learned after reading this book that it is the author’s debut novel. Well done! I hope she continues writing because I am keen to read what she comes up with next.
