A Word From The Author To Readers
Q: What makes the Kana Cold series so special?
A: I love weird stories, it’s why I have a Facebook group called The Wonderfully Weird. Urban Fantasy is full of so many great stories and characters, but I wanted to write something that went beyond wizards, zombies, and vampires or Greek and Roman mythology. There are thousands of strange myths, old and new, that haven’t been explored that can be made into great stories. The Reaping of the Black Grimoires is based on the very real grimoires written by former Popes and are rumored to be locked away in the Vatican Archives. There are African and Scandinavian mythologies I want to dig into as well. And of course, since Kana is of Japanese heritage, the treasure trove of Japanese legends and Eastern philosophy will be explored in a narrative form.
Kana’s heritage is also important. We’ve heard so much about how underrepresented Asians are in Western pop culture, even when the stories are based on popular Asian properties (Death Note, Ghost in the Shell to name a few). I decided to flip it: Kana’s in a world where her contemporaries look and act like the typical heroes of the stories – buxom blondes and suave, muscular leading men – and she struggles with measuring herself against these people despite how good she is. That’s a theme throughout the series.
Q: What Are The Main Influences For This Series?
A: There are quite a few:
- The Dresden Files is certainly an influence
- The globe-trotting and treasure hunting of Indiana Jones
- The attitude and spunk of Jessica Jones
- Clive Barker’s scary-yet-beautiful way of creating worlds and monsters
- Creepypastas and lesser-known urban legends that are beyond bizarre
- Shayne Silvers and his Nate Temple Series

Kana Cold: The Reaping of the Black Grimoires by KC Hunter is a wonderful story that I read writen by a brand new author I never read before this story. This is a wonderful start to a brand new series and I loved reading this story. I highly recommend this story to everyone.

Seldom do you come upon a book series that you simply fall in love with the stories and the characters, but that is exactly what happened when I started reading the Kana Cold series. I love how real and palpable all the characters are in this book as if you are reading a biography rather than a fictional character. Plus the mix of the paranormal with James Bond-like action is just perfect. I get done reading one of these books and I can’t wait to start the next one. This book series ranks up there with Twilight and Outlander for me.
Kana and her sometimes unlikely allies race across the world in search of 3 cursed religious relics that could spell big trouble in the wrong hands. Lots of action, a bit of a romance (with the steamy bits staying behind closed doors). Written with a cinematic eye, it was an exciting read.
I can see the influences the author claims. This book had a Indiana Jones meets Jessica Jones feel, except Kana is still very soft under her cold exterior. Hmm, maybe a bit more like Romancing the Stone. Where The Case of the Shinigami reminded me a bit of the Winchester brothers with the creepy paranormal monsters, The Reaping of the Black Grimoires was less about the paranormal and more about the treasure hunt. Kana is young, inexperienced and has just taken her first case in the big leagues. She has a lot to learn and a lot to prove.
This is book 1 in the series (not counting the prequel) so there is quite a bit of world building and character introductions. Lots of questions and possibilities are raised for future books. I think this has a lot of potential.
KC Hunter is a new author for me, but after reading Kana Cold: The Reaping of the Black Grimoires: (Kana Cold Paranormal Thriller Series Book 1), it’s clear that this is someone needing to be followed. I loved Kana, she’s just the kind of kick-a** heroine I adore, and this Jill with its secret societies, black magic grimoires, action, adventure and wild paranormal thrills, is just the kind of story I love. The publisher’s blurb promises that if you love Linsey Hall, Jim Butcher, Shayne Silvers, Patricia Briggs, Faith Hunter, or Steve McHugh then you’ll love this book. I’ve read just about everything written by those other authors and can happily verify that this is a promise that is kept. I’m happy to highly recommend the book.
This makes you feel like you are learning something about the paranormal. I like most of the characters. Some dynamics of the book are hard to believe. Left you with goosebumps and hair raising twists.
