A Word From The Author To Readers
Q: What makes the Kana Cold series so special?
A: I love weird stories, it’s why I have a Facebook group called The Wonderfully Weird. Urban Fantasy is full of so many great stories and characters, but I wanted to write something that went beyond wizards, zombies, and vampires or Greek and Roman mythology. There are thousands of strange myths, old and new, that haven’t been explored that can be made into great stories. The Reaping of the Black Grimoires is based on the very real grimoires written by former Popes and are rumored to be locked away in the Vatican Archives. There are African and Scandinavian mythologies I want to dig into as well. And of course, since Kana is of Japanese heritage, the treasure trove of Japanese legends and Eastern philosophy will be explored in a narrative form.
Kana’s heritage is also important. We’ve heard so much about how underrepresented Asians are in Western pop culture, even when the stories are based on popular Asian properties (Death Note, Ghost in the Shell to name a few). I decided to flip it: Kana’s in a world where her contemporaries look and act like the typical heroes of the stories – buxom blondes and suave, muscular leading men – and she struggles with measuring herself against these people despite how good she is. That’s a theme throughout the series.
Q: What Are The Main Influences For This Series?
A: There are quite a few:
- The Dresden Files is certainly an influence
- The globe-trotting and treasure hunting of Indiana Jones
- The attitude and spunk of Jessica Jones
- Clive Barker’s scary-yet-beautiful way of creating worlds and monsters
- Creepypastas and lesser-known urban legends that are beyond bizarre
- Shayne Silvers and his Nate Temple Series

Thank you to Booksirens and the author for a complimentary e-ARC. I am choosing to leave a fair and honest review.
This is my second trip into Kana Cold’s world. And I enjoyed every minute of it. Kana is one of the most unique heroines running about the Urban Fantasy genre. I had the privilege of reading book 0 – Kana Cold and the Shinigami.
Cleverly set in our time, with the recent presidential impeachment trial as a background, Kana takes on a case that connects to her last one. The FBI has her chasing down Tomas, the Man From Rome, for them because, to them, she is expendable. At the same time, her crew, AJ and Piper are trying to track down more information about a family mystery involving his family and the titled asylum. What’s better than a haunted asylum? And as for the Shinigami? Enjoying its role in Kana’s life.
Kana will eventually join UF heroines like Dante Valentine, Anita Black and Rachel (Kim Harrison book). She is complex, angry and oh so psychically talented. Mr. Hunter has created a wonderfully dark, rich and treacly world, where two refugees, Liu and Kenny, might hold the answer to all the problems or they may be a red herring. They do make a perfect modern-Greek chorus.
I enjoyed the unusual monsters that Mr. Hunter puts against Kana. They do not fall into the Western Stereotypes. They are all creepier for it. Whether it is the Shinigami or the new terror, The Hungry, the descriptions getting under your skin.
While Kana Cold straddles the line between horror and urban fantasy, readers in both genre will be happy with this offering.

Rather than pursuing artifacts, Kana and AJ find themselves playing bait and pawn in this thrilling addition to the series. Aj & Piper attend to his dying father while Kana deals with other issues at home including a couple new tagalongs eager to prove their worth.
Nothing is quite as it seems and the paranormal elements are maxing out the meters on this one! Kana’s world gains quite a bit of depth as this book delves into characters’ past, psyche and relationships – including a peek at a villain. Ghosts, demons, bio-engineered weapons, computer hacking, and a dangerous game of pool are just a few of the challenges in the book. Creepy on many levels, Kana has a lot of dark adventures ahead of her.
This is book 2 in the series, 3rd book if you include the prequel. While each book contains a self contained plot, each book builds on the last and contains threads that seem to be building up to a larger overarching story line. There are brief explanations of events and characters references from previous books but I would recommend starting with the Case of the Shinigami.
A totally kick-a** heroine. A perfectly plotted paranormal thriller that’s excellently written with a great supporting cast and perfect world-building. That’s the hallmark of KC Hunter’s Kana Cold Series, and it’s all amply demonstrated in Kana Cold: The Deception of Seraphim Asylum (Book 2). This is great stuff, and highly recommended.
Great characters. Story pulls you in and won’t let you go. Lots of haunted and paranormal activity. Goosebumps and spine-tingling.
