A Word From The Author To Readers
Q: What makes the Kana Cold series so special?
A: I love weird stories, it’s why I have a Facebook group called The Wonderfully Weird. Urban Fantasy is full of so many great stories and characters, but I wanted to write something that went beyond wizards, zombies, and vampires or Greek and Roman mythology. There are thousands of strange myths, old and new, that haven’t been explored that can be made into great stories. The Reaping of the Black Grimoires is based on the very real grimoires written by former Popes and are rumored to be locked away in the Vatican Archives. There are African and Scandinavian mythologies I want to dig into as well. And of course, since Kana is of Japanese heritage, the treasure trove of Japanese legends and Eastern philosophy will be explored in a narrative form.
Kana’s heritage is also important. We’ve heard so much about how underrepresented Asians are in Western pop culture, even when the stories are based on popular Asian properties (Death Note, Ghost in the Shell to name a few). I decided to flip it: Kana’s in a world where her contemporaries look and act like the typical heroes of the stories – buxom blondes and suave, muscular leading men – and she struggles with measuring herself against these people despite how good she is. That’s a theme throughout the series.
Q: What Are The Main Influences For This Series?
A: There are quite a few:
The Dresden Files is certainly an influence
The globe-trotting and treasure hunting of Indiana Jones
The attitude and spunk of Jessica Jones
Clive Barker’s scary-yet-beautiful way of creating worlds and monsters
Creepypastas and lesser-known urban legends that are beyond bizarre
Shayne Silvers and his Nate Temple Series
more
This is a very good start to what looks to be a very intriguing series. I love the characters and the storyline is ultra unique. The main character has grace and is down and gritty at the same time. It makes her come alive off the pages. I really enjoyed this book and recommend it highly.
She has dropped out of school to be a paranormal investigator at first all her cases are fake. Then she gets one about a girl haunted by a demon and finally it is all real. Can she solve the case? What will happen next? How will She get on? See how she solves her first real case

Kana Cold: Case of the Shinigami: A Paranormal Thriller Short Story Paperback – January 1, 2019
by KC Hunter (Author)
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
It is a rare thing for an Urban Fantasy to focus on Asian paranormal legends and mythologies. Ms Hunter does a good job introducing us to the world of Kana Cold and the Shinigami. As people who haven’t watched/read Death Note, a Shinigami is a Japanese Death God.
Kana Cold is called into to investigate the terrors and possible possession of a little girl. She discovers that it is more than just your avergae possession and more than a poltergeist. She has to make a decision that will change her life. She also reflects a little big on her own past.
The story is told in varying omniscient third person between Kana and the father of the little girl. The solution to the mystery does at times seem to be telegraphed with Kana’s own story. Kana and AJ are supposed to be teenagers yet seem to act like they are in the mid-twenties, yet we are not given a clear idea of why. The mother is a bit stereotypical.
Overall, it is enough to make me want to read the next book for the mythologies explored.
4 stars out of 5.

This PG13 paranormal investigation has a POWERFUL opening and only takes a couple hours to read.
I read an Advance Reader Copy and this voluntary review is my own opinion.
Contemporary urban paranormal with more than dash of horror
Starring a broken anti-hero, Kana Cold does a good job balancing darker elements of paranormal fantasy, snark, and a bit of real heart. This is a good introduction to the series giving the reader glimpses into who Kana Cold is, they type of cases she works and the world she inhabits.
Wow, a powerful beginning to what promises to be an intense series. Thank heavens it is in Kindle Unlimited! Very intense.
I don’t normally read paranormal stories, but this one sounded intriguing, so I thought I’d give it a go. A little girl has been waking up in the middle of the night, screaming, and her body shows bruising, so her father tracks down Kana and AJ, in the hope that their background with paranormal activity can help uncover what is really going on. It was an interesting story, touching on various types of ghosts, demons, and other ethereal beings. It could have used a bit more back story in several places and more questions were left unanswered than were answered. I think it could be an interesting series, but unfortunately, I was never really able to connect with any of the characters.
I received a free ARC from BookSirens and have reviewed it willingly.
Excellent series. I want to read more of the series. Keeps a steady dialogue and engagable characters. Received ARC.
