Lorna Kepler was beautiful and willful, a loner who couldn’t resist flirting with danger. Maybe that’s what killed her.Her death had raised a host of tough questions. The cops suspected homicide, but they could find neither motive nor suspect. Even the means were mysterious: Lorna’s body was so badly decomposed when it was discovered that they couldn’t be certain she hadn’t died of natural … natural causes. In the way of overworked cops everywhere, the case was gradually shifted to the back burner and became another unsolved file.
Only Lorna’s mother kept it alive, consumed by the certainty that somebody out there had gotten away with murder.
In the ten months since her daughter’s death, Janice Kepler had joined a support group, trying to come to terms with her loss and her anger. It wasn’t helping. And so, leaving a session one evening and noticing a light on in the offices of Millhone Investigations, she knocked on the door.
In answering that knock, Kinsey Millhone is pulled into the netherworld of unavenged murder, where only a pact with the devil will satisfy the restless ghosts of the victims and give release to the living they have left behind.
Eleven books into the series that has won her readers around the world, Sue Grafton takes a darkside turn, pitching us into a shadow land of pain and grief where killers still walk free, unaccused, unpunished, unrepentant. With “K” is for Killer she offers a tale that is dark, complex, and deeply disturbing.

PI Kinsey Millhone’s latest case is a cold one. Lorna Kepler has been dead for 10 months, and when she died she had been dead for two weeks before she was found, so the police couldn’t even determine the cause of death. As Kinsey begins to investigate, she realizes that Lorna had a completely secret life, and the investigation causes Kinsey to become a night owl like Lorna was. Will following her footsteps lead to her killer?
This is another great mystery. The cold case quality leads to some interesting complications to the investigation. Lorna’s life included some things that don’t normally pop up in my cozies, but we didn’t get gratuitous detail, which I appreciated. The ending was a bit rushed, but that’s a minor complaint. We don’t see much of the other series characters, but Kinsey is fantastic as always, and the book is populated with real people that draw us into the story.
Lorna Kepler, a stunning loner, dies suddenly. Her body is so badly decomposed when someone eventually finds it in the lonely hut she called home, the cops think she may have died of natural causes. But she was only 24 years old and in perfect health.
Her mother hires Kinsey Milhone to investigate. And what a tangled mess it is!
Lorna led a complex life. By day a receptionist and college student, by night she connected with powerful men, wiling to pay a fortune for her “services.”
This volume leads us into the dark side of life in southern California. As usual, Ms. Grafton’s writing is impeccable, and her plot twists so deft that even I couldn’t figure out what was going on until the very end. Five stars.
Love Sue Grafton’s books and Kinsey is a very believable private eye and you really get to know her character reading the A to Z books.
I miss looking forward to a new Sue Grafton book and know there are no more
to come. There isn’t even one of her books that I wouldn’t recommend because I
have read and loved them all. Laugh out loud books. Superb reads.
One of my favorites in the series. Ms. Grafton can paint a picture with words that makes it easy to get caught up in the story. Read this one, read all of them – that is my suggestion.
This is a wonderful series. I have read all of them so far.
Great book! All of Sue Grafton’s books are great.
All of Sue Grafton’s books with Kinsey Millhone are good. I was very sorry when Ms. Grafton passed away.
Read this series!
After writing a book g
This Sue Grafton series is a must read for mystery book enthusiasts. Start with A book.
I love Kinsey!
I always liked Sue Graton, her mystery writing was good and I liked her main character who was original but not weird. A good vacation or beach read.
We listen to these books when we travel and have loved every one.
Sue Grafton-Always entertaining
Will miss Grafton’s last book – she was great.
As usual, Sue Grafton doesn’t disappoint!
I was really disappointed in this one. The story kept me turning pages, but that was the most unsatisfying ending to a book that I remember in a long time. They answered one question and left me with about a hundred more. I don’t need a mystery to end the way I envision, but I would at least like a good 80% resolution. I closed this book feeling annoyed. The last 5 pages tainted the previous 280 for me. Blah.
Kinsey is always getting into mysteries that are different
Love Sue Grafton
I love the way the characters grow from book to book. You feel like you know them.
