JUSTICE was thoughtful, poignant, heart wrenching, and above all, centered on strong Christian themes. Jake and Brooklyn’s character arcs proved to be ones I was completely drawn to. Their choices throughout the book had me thinking about the choices I would have made if I were in their positions. Emily Conrad has crafted a carefully thought out story with characters and a setting that stay with you long after turning that last page.
Conrad’s debut novel is one of the best I have read! If you are looking for an up-and-coming author to follow, Emily Conrad is one to watch. I couldn’t imagine how she would tie all the threads together at the end, but she does in a way that both satisfies the reader and is believable.
If you enjoyed The Atonement Child by Francine Rivers you’ll love Justice!
So good I have read it twice.
The plot presents an incredibly challenging relationship, in view of the female lead character’s pregnancy and the circumstances surrounding this pregnancy. The author weaves this story of the long term close relationship between the two main characters, and the impact of their families and friends as they wrestle with this life changing challenge. I appreciated the author’s ability to build a plausible plot line, that was consistent with the character’s Christian worldview, and develop the character’s belief system throughout the book.
Great story of God’s grace and forgiveness
Very good book. Interesting twists and turns.
Two people in a push-pull for love and life. A coffee shop owner, Jake, rethinks his engagement when his fiancee tells him she’s pregnant. And it’s not his child. Add in an aggressive bookstore owner across the street who thinks Jake’s little shelf of books in the shop constitutes competition and the perfect life Jake planned starts to unravel.
Full of hope and grace, I loved this book!
I absolutely loved this book! Real life is not easy, and the characters in this book stay true to this in their dealings with the events in their lives. The characters show a range of reactions that are very true to our own human nature. From being angry & wanting to seek justice on our own rather than turning it over to God, to finding a way to forgive, not only others but themselves as well, the author made these characters very relatable. While dealing with some very serious topics, the author also did a good job of infusing moments of joy and lightness into the story as well. I found the book to be very enjoyable to read, while also helping me to remember that we are to leave judgment and justice to God. I highly recommend this book. I received a free copy of this book for review, but all opinions and comments are my own.
Justice is a great debut novel by Emily Conrad. It comes with a hard-hitting message about the dangers of seeking “justice” and not allowing God to be the one to take care of matters for us. The author led me on a path where I wanted “justice” to be served in the same way Jake did.
Jake was a great mix of too-good-to-be-true in the way he cared so deeply for Brooklyn and was so patient and caring towards her and hot-headed and vengeful in the way he wanted to deal with the father of Brooklyn’s baby and with Harold. He was such a great example to the teen boys he worked with of abstinence and living like Jesus up until the events of the story. And yet his heart was not so hard that the lessons the Lord wanted to teach him couldn’t get through.
I really admire the way the author was willing to leave several of the mysteries unsolved in the story. Not for the purpose of setting the scene for a sequel, because this story does stand alone, but because some crimes are just never resolved here on earth.
Though there are some heavy themes, they are handled very well and in such a way as to not make this a dark or violent book. There is just enough detail about what happened to Brooklyn to explain, but not to make it inappropriate.
I will be watching for more books by this author.

I would like to thank Pelican Book Group for giving me this item. My opinion and review were not influenced by this gift.
Justice was as very hard and very serious for me to go into – the book has real subject matters – serious subject matter that many women go through and many men are going though also and with having to sort of dealing with whether they are aware of it or not but if they are Christians like those in the book. In the book GOD takes care of those involved and HE guides and takes care of the situation on all ends. HE also takes vengeance – like in the Scripture where it says “Vengeance is mine saith the LORD”. I would not want to be on the other end of that would you? In this story this goes through a lot more than you know, right now trust me , way more and she has GOD, that is how she is making it through it all – this is one to read if you are into a very serious book. I received a copy of this book from the Publisher and Netgalley; all the opinions expressed in this review are all my own.
