From New York Times bestselling author Penelope Ward, comes a new standalone novel. The beginning of my sophomore year in college was off to a rough start. On the first day of orientation, I had an altercation with an infuriating British dude in a campus bathroom. (The ladies’ room was out of order. So, I used the men’s room. Don’t judge.)I got home later that night and realized that the foreign … realized that the foreign student we were expecting to rent a room in my parents’ house was allergic to our cat.
So, the spare room went to someone else: Caleb—the British guy from the men’s room.
And so it began…my love-hate story with Caleb Yates. Or was it hate-love in that order?
The guy knew how to push every one of my buttons.
Sometimes I’d email him to express my aggravation and disdain.
He’d actually rewrite my own words and send them back to me.
That was the type of infuriating person Caleb was.
So frustrating.
And…
Sometimes incredibly funny and endearingly sweet.
And hot.
He eventually grew on me, and Caleb soon became one of my best friends that year.
Too bad he was headed back to England soon, so nothing could happen between us—for so many reasons.
I definitely couldn’t fall in love with him, especially since all we had was just one year.

Sexy, British foreign exchange student….YESSSS PLEASE!!! Teagan’s about to get schooled and it’s never been HOTTER! A slow burn, enemies-to-lovers romance with the most intense attraction. You won’t be able to resist Caleb either!
Caleb is in Boston as an exchange student to complete his freshman year. His parents are back in the UK. He’s finally free to let go of some of his past and live happily in the present. He’s fun and witty which he hides his pain. He’s loyal and good. He’s just a little lost.
Teagan is a genius, introvert working toward her degree in marine biology. She’s driven and dedicated when it comes to her studies, however she’s not great with people or emotional attachments. From a loving family, she still keeps herself on the outside.
Her and Caleb get off on the wrong foot but since she’s now his host family while he’s in the US, they’ll have to find a way to get along. Caleb wins her over quickly with his British charm and s’mores.
They started out butting heads, but soon become friends who share their deepest secrets and painful pasts. It doesn’t take long for friendship to turn into romantic feelings. The only problem is Caleb’s stay has an end date.
Caleb and Teagan share an incendiary slow burn. He’s leaving at the end of the school year. He has family and obligations to get back to, so starting a relationship is the last thing they should do. However, the pull is just too strong. There comes a point where you need to decide whether to make the most of the time you have or live with the regret of never knowing how good it could have been.
This story was filled with emotion. Love and loss. Guilt and heartache. It was chasing dreams and finding your happiness. It was sexual chemistry and falling in love. The path is not always straight forward, but the ending makes it all worth it. You will fall in love with Teagan and Caleb!
Pure storytelling magic
This is why I lovelovelove Penelope Ward! The story of Teagan and Caleb has the feel of a classic Ward romance. The magic is in the writing, how the characters and their story blossoms as the journey unfolds. It’s deeply emotional on several layers and the story is very well balanced. This romance gave me all the happy feels. Caleb and Teagan is everything.
The latest from Penelope Ward!
OMG!!!!! Where does one begin to describe the feelings you’ve experienced upon finishing Just One Year!!! It started out with uncontrollable giggling and then went into heart breaking moments, which led to unbelievable happiness!! The smile i experienced was imbedded deep into my bones!! I mean pure joy!! What an unbelievable journey! Brilliantly written! Heartwarming and heartbreaking all in the same story! Phenomenal read!!
This is a full length stand alone romance but i can honestly say even with it being full length i still want more of these characters!! Told from both POV’s it had me hooked and i couldn’t put it down from beginning to end!
Caleb is on a student exchange programme and fate has him spending his year with Teagan and her family.
I loved so many aspects of this journey. Characters that you instantly like and it just keeps growing.
Caleb is a young man with an old heart and is beyond adorabubble !!! Definite swoon fest through out the entire book and beyond !!!! His past has made him have to grow up fast and he carries some heavy demons.
Teagan is a young woman, good student, but her past has left her with issues and doubts, she finds it hard to trust and also to show love or emotions, yet she has a beautiful soul.
Despite their attraction for each other they grown into a deep and meaningful friendship.
Omg Penelope Ward just hits all your emotions and had me literally screeching inside my head for this couple to get together, and not worry about their limited time and having to say goodbye !! I cried whilst worrying how they were ever going to navigate their world turning on its axis. My heart hurt, really hurt for them, and once departure day for Caleb was swiftly on the horizon i was shattered and gutted !! So not fair Ms Ward!! The characters felt so real and i love how this author uses her amazing skills to bring you in and makes you feel involved both mentally and emotionally, feeling and connecting with everything Caleb and Teagan!!!
This is a book you just have to read, this couple are the embodiment of Love, Trust, Acceptance, Faith, Family and so so much more !!! I’m still sobbing over Calebs letters and when you read it you will get it !!!!
HOLY HECK! Ms Ward knows how to slay words! What an incredible story! The story line… the characters… the chemistry between the characters… IT IS EVERYTHING!
Penelope at her best! Love all of Penelope’s books, but have not found one that has been an absolute favorite since Stepbrother Dearest and Neighbor Dearest until Just One Year! This book had all the feels and banter that I love. Teagan and her family take in an exchange student. Due to allergies, the original student Bo could not come, but instead a guy Teagan met in the restroom at school. Caleb and Teagan had a funny run in but she thinks he is a jerk. She is in shock when she realizes this is her new roommate for the year. They grow close and before they are both ready, the year is up and Caleb must go back home but promises to keep in touch. They lose their way for a bit, but in the end get the HEA. Just loved everything about this book. Caleb was such an amazing soul and loved seeing him help Teagan to come terms with her family and letting them in. Only problem with book was that it ended, I wanted more!!
Ahhh! I am a sucker for a British hero! Swoon!
4.5 stars! I loved Teagan and Caleb! This was a slow burn college romance that had all the feels! What do you do when you feel an intense attraction to someone, but they are only going to be staying for a year?
I loved the relationship between Teagan and Caleb. As young as they were, they both had “old souls”, having situations in their pasts that affected them deeply. Because of this, it was refreshing to see them both be open and honest with each other about their lives. Teagan and Caleb trusted each other on a deep level, which built a solid foundation for their relationship. That’s not to say there weren’t miscommunications that caused some angst and heartache along the way, making my tummy ache and my heart clench. Penelope, boy, she knows how to write young love!
I absolutely adored Teagan’s family and Caleb’s mum. And the other people who become a part of Teagan and Caleb’s life along the way. I was really invested in the storyline, not only for the relationship between Teagan and Caleb, but the underlying storylines that Teagan and Caleb deal with along the way.
I don’t often read YA or NA books, but Penelope is one whose stories I can’t get enough of. Young love just makes my heart melt!
Penelope Ward has truly succeeded AGAIN! While not super angsty, Just One Year definitely has its moments of angst that are simply delicious. Teagan and Caleb are magic, and their union is intoxicating.
While these two do not start off on the right foot, their journey towards getting to know one another is charming and heartwarming. Two opposites on a path that is a bit bumpy, with a possible dubious outlook, makes for many bated-breath laden moments. I just couldn’t get enough.
A slow-burn romance, this story, for me, is truly about their exploration of one another. These two, bringing out different hidden qualities in one another…opening each other’s eyes to what was already there and the possibility of what could be. It’s a breathtaking story.
While a college-years romance is not typically in my wheel house, Penelope Ward had me smitten right away with this one. It provided lots of funny moments, and had me smiling from ear to ear many times. The back and forth banter between Teagan and Caleb is intriguing and not with out smirk-inducing moments.
I loved this story. It made my heart sing because their attraction was just so undeniable. I’m so happy this story made it onto my reading list because it is truly unforgettable.
I love reading anything by Penelope Ward. Her characters are so relatable, I can’t help falling in love with them. The story has a lot of laughs, angsts and it’s impossible not to love Calab. Calab and Teagan are everything! Just One Year is amazing!
Well, let’s see here: an emotional, standalone, friends-to-lovers college romance with lots of angst and steam? AND a British hero? Yep. All the boxes are checked.
This was a cute read that I really enjoyed. Teagan and Caleb characters were fun and I really enjoyed their story.
Teagan is an introvert and always has her guard up. She keeps to herself and feels like she doesn’t fit in. Her stepmom hosts exchange students and they were expecting a Chinese exchange student. Things don’t work out when he is allergic to cats he and Caleb trade houses. After Teagan’s first encounter earlier at school she wasn’t too thrilled to see Caleb at her house.
The more time Teagan and Caleb spend together they begin to form a bond. These two were so cute and I really enjoyed their story. I like getting both POV’s. Just One Year was a cute book with great secondary characters.
Such an unbelievable story. Tears of sadness and tears of joy and everything in between. Their story will have you on the edge of your seats wondering how they can make this work. Love will find a way and it always does. Teagan and Caleb didn’t start out as boyfriend and girlfriend. Because of their living situation he thought a “pseudo-sister” relationship would be better. But when they did finally give into their feelings it was full speed ahead. Caleb found a “family” when he came to live with the Carroll’s. IT was sort of an escape of what he left in London. He fell in love not only with Teague but her family as well. Caleb and Teague understood each other. He helped her come out of her shell and open her heart to her dad and stepmom and Shelly. He helped with her abandonment issues from her biological mom. How could they survive when his time was up in the States and he has to return to London. Will love be enough to see them through.
Cute slow burn story. I found both characters quite adorable and likable. Caleb was loyal, playful, caring and just an all around good guy. Teagan was a bit more complicated. Smart and reserved she felt undeserving of love. I definitely felt a heart tug towards her. These two just give you all of those “awwwwww” feelings and you just know they belong together. Lots of feel good moments where you feel like fate and destiny just guided these two and their families on a journey that was necessary to be complete. Really liked it.
AND
Wowza! I really enjoyed this book. I loved how a friendship turned into something beautiful and strong. I enjoyed their struggle on how to make it work although it did frustrate me. The characters had intense chemistry and witty banter that had me in laughing fits. This was definitely a feel good read! Would definitely recommend!!
An embarrassing run in to finding out he’s your new roommate has Teagan and Caleb starting off on the wrong foot. At first Teagan pushes Caleb away, it’s not just him, she pushes everyone away. But the more time Teagan and Caleb spend together the more the have to fight their attraction.
Both are reluctant to start anything because Caleb will be going back to England after the school year…. but they can’t help it. Now they will have to figure out if there is a future or if this was a small fling.
So what happens? You’ll definitely want to one-click this charming, original story.
Teagan and Caleb meet in Boston when Caleb decides to spend his first year of college studying abroad and lives with Teagan’s family. Their story is one of friendship, sharing secrets, compassion, understanding and through this all wrapped in a love story that has an expiration date. Because after just one year Caleb has to go back to England.
They do figure out that they have a lot in common and their friendship is forged on the commonality of having parent issues and childhoods that were wrought with emotional crisis’s. Can they figure out a way to make their relationship work after Caleb leaves? Will the distance be too much? Can Caleb and Teagan figure out a way to make their relationship last past it’s expiration date?
Something special happens when I read a book by Penelope Ward.
And it happened again with this story.
I think I mention in every review that she has these little details that make the story so unique. Each character has some kind of quirky element or find themselves in the strangest situations and I am always so amused by them.
Caleb was so snarky and adorable at the same time. Teagan is such a strong, driven woman.
Together, they were perfection!
Well in true Penelope Ward fashion, I was hooked from the start in this sweet, charming and emotional new adult romance. She has such a way of telling stories, that even though NA is not my go to, this author definitely is. I devoured this book in one day because I just had to find out if Caleb and Teagan would ever give what was brewing between them a chance! It felt like their love transcended their ages. I loved these characters so much and absolutely adored this book!!
