From New York Times bestselling author Penelope Ward, comes a new standalone novel. The beginning of my sophomore year in college was off to a rough start. On the first day of orientation, I had an altercation with an infuriating British dude in a campus bathroom. (The ladies’ room was out of order. So, I used the men’s room. Don’t judge.)I got home later that night and realized that the foreign … realized that the foreign student we were expecting to rent a room in my parents’ house was allergic to our cat.
So, the spare room went to someone else: Caleb—the British guy from the men’s room.
And so it began…my love-hate story with Caleb Yates. Or was it hate-love in that order?
The guy knew how to push every one of my buttons.
Sometimes I’d email him to express my aggravation and disdain.
He’d actually rewrite my own words and send them back to me.
That was the type of infuriating person Caleb was.
So frustrating.
And…
Sometimes incredibly funny and endearingly sweet.
And hot.
He eventually grew on me, and Caleb soon became one of my best friends that year.
Too bad he was headed back to England soon, so nothing could happen between us—for so many reasons.
I definitely couldn’t fall in love with him, especially since all we had was just one year.

I have been a huge Penelope Ward fan for years. I have my certain one that was my go to favorite of hers, but Just One Year, I think I have a new favorite. This story is about growing up, raw emotions, and oh so much more. Between their “meet cute” moment which had me laughing so hard, to the intense moments that Caleb and Teagan have when they connect on a deeper level, I fully devoured this book! There was so much that made you feel in this book. I adored the concept and the flow was perfect. Seeing the character build of both was amazing as well. Honestly, it is hard to write this review because I just want to scream about the epicness that is Just One Year.
Overall, this is a book that needs to be read. I giggled, I swooned, I got angry but mostly, I felt the emotions that both Teagan and Caleb went through. You feel what they do. It felt real. Like you were watching this play out in front of you!
3.5 stars
Teagan Carroll’s year did not start on the right foot. After an embarrassing encounter with a hot British student, things got worse because Caleb Yates ended up being much closer for comfort.
Teagan was studious and closed off and I liked how Caleb brought her out to her full potential without pushing her. He had his own issues but was still considerate and caring.
This was a light and easy read. I like that there was some angst, but I prefer more intensity between the two main characters and some parts were slow for me.
Just One Year is a story of taking chances. It would appeal to readers who enjoy a light NA Romance.
3.5 star.
Just One Year was a wonderful friends-to-lovers college romance with a twist.
Caleb is an exchange student from the UK. He’s set to be in Boston for one year of his education and so happens to be living with Teagan’s family.
Teagan and Caleb clash at the beginning which made for some hilarious emails and verbal exchanges.
I loved how the author took the time to build up the tension AND their friendship.
It was sweet, cute and heartwarming how they started opening up to each other about their issues and their dark pasts.
As there was so much time spent building up their relationship, when it finally did happen, it felt rushed. A lot more happened in the last 30% than in the entire book which made it feel just a little off balanced. Nonetheless, I still enjoyed this story.
This was a fairly easy read and a definite page-turner. I’d recommend it.
YES YES YES!!!!!!!!!!
THIS BOOK JUST BECAME MY FAVORITE PENELOPE BOOK EVER!!!! I seriously could not put this book down at all, I just wanted to keep reading it and nothing else. Penelope wrote such a sweet, cute, funny, and romantic book. Just One Year had me laughing, crying, and swooning like crazy.
Caleb is an exchange student from London, he was everything. I loved how sweet and I just wanted to hug him. He is in the states for school nothing more, he doesn’t have time to get attached and fall in love. Teagan was everything, I loved how sweet she was, she was someone who always thought she didn’t fit in, she thought she didn’t matter as much.
These two meet in the most funny way possible, they weren’t expecting to meet but destiny had other plans. These two needed each other, they completed each other and gave each other the strength to love and feel loved. This book was amazing, this is a must read!!
What can I say about this book. It was sooo good and I absolutely could not put it down. Caleb was such a cheeky lad that with such a good heart. Teagan is such a badass that doesn’t take crap from anyone. They were both dealt a crappy hand at a point in their lives and both still hold on to those thoughts. It was a good buildup to a friends to lovers storyline.
Side note- I love the Teagan was one of the name choices for my daughter.
From New York Times bestselling author Penelope Ward, comes a new standalone novel: JUST ONE YEAR. With a college romance, a British hero, and some angst—you can’t really go wrong!
I read Just One Year in one sitting- it so was fantastic I couldn’t put it down! My son sat down to read with me (poor kid was having to read for an English class assignment and I was so glad my read was for pleasure and much more enjoyable than his) and long after he got up, I just kept reading. Just One Year was emotional and angsty and full of fantastic banter, hilarious moments and so much steam. I always have a soft spot for quirky heroines, being a bit quirky myself, and I’ll never turn down a British hero. I count Penelope Ward as one of my favorite authors who never disappoints.
Seriously… I don’t even know where to start.
Penelope is amazing and her words are so amazing!! Yet again I’ve fallen in love with another one of her book boyfriends & and the story and I’m not even sorry lol.
I loved how Teagan & Caleb meet for the very first time in the men’s toilets at the college. ” Smell you later, love” haha.. Teagan is wanting to die of embarrassment and Caleb is finding it hilarious. She thinks she’ll never see him again.. But boy is she wrong lol.
Teagan lives with her Dad, Stepmum and sister whilst she’s in college. They rent a room out for either people traveling through Boston or students needing to rent a room. They’re all waiting for Bo Cheng who’s an international student from china… But something crops up and he can’t move in so somebody else takes his place.. . You can see where I’m going with this right haha.
After her run in with Caleb in the men’s toilets she doesn’t like him so when she finds out he’s the person who’s renting the room she’s like this can’t be happening. So there’s emails exchanged and she’s thinking who does he think he is.
But then they realise they started off on the wrong foot and then they become friends.
I can’t even say anything else… But he only has a year in Boston till he has to go back to the UK and they start to get close.. *sobs in a corner*
Even though I knew where a part of the story would kind of go but when it happens I still wasn’t prepared for it when the time came and I ugly cried lol.
Caleb & Teagan’s story made my heart so darn happy. The sweet moments made me put my hand on my heart and gave me all the butterflies.
Whatever Penelope writes a book I read it, fall in love with the story & characters and they stay with me forever.
Well done on another fantastic read xx
I really loved this book i hadn’t really read any blurbs or teasers for this one i just wanted to go in blind so i wasn’t sure what to expect.
This is a NA story of pretty much first loved but when someone is only is only going to school in the same country as you for a year it should mean to keep clear but with this story we got a tiny bit of enimes first, then friendship and then well love, but it wasn’t an easy love.
I really did love the way Teagen and Caleb talked to eachother at times had some really great communication other times not so much. I really loved how they brought eachother out of their comfort zones and basically brought the best out of each other. I loved both of these characters they were both fighting their pasts and trying to move on.
One thing that really drew me to this book was the meaning of family you didn’t have to be related to have a family and letting people in can make you realise all the good you have and not to dwell on the past.
Another amazing book by Penelope ward and why she will always be a one click author for me
I get to the end of the book and I’m still trying to swipe right to left. I’m yelling turn the page, why won’t the page turn? Then it hits me…..the book ended. I had to read the last few sentences to actually register that the book ended.
Teagan and Caleb had chemistry from the beginning, just to blind to actually see it.
I will say get some tissues handy, I got teary eyed!
What would you do for love? True, blissful love? Teagan she proves her love as well as Caleb.
Once I started this book I had a hard time putting it down. Penelope has another hit on her hands. Just One Year is a fun, sexy story with an extremely funny meet cute and as with all of Penelope’s books so far, I highly recommend it.
Caleb is an exchange student from England who seems to be a mostly laid back, take nothing too seriously kind of person to Teagan who at first doesn’t find him very likable. She’s a little put off by how he doesn’t pull any punches and tells her what he sees to be the truth.
Caleb at first doesn’t see Teagan in a romantic way at all but does love to screw with her about how serious she seems to take everything and how introverted she is.
This is a very sweet, slow build, romantic story about finding your true love early in life and the sacrifices a couple might need to make to be together.
Teagan and Caleb’s relationship began with an awkward meeting in the Men’s washroom when Teagan used it in an emergency because the women’s was out of order. Then they meet again when she finds out that the student that was to be renting a room in her house for the school year had to switch houses due to a cat allergy. She was shock when she found out that the new person staying with them was none other than the British guy from the bathroom. She could not believe that she would have to be in the same house with this infuriating man. Things were rocky at the start. He passed judgment on her relation with her sister, and family which caused her to lash out through an email. When he re-wrote the email in different words and sent it back to her she was furious. They soon got over their dispute and things became tolerable. Over time their friendship grew to a point that they trusted each other and secrets were revealed from both sides. Both were dealing with a lot of emotional baggage that needed to be sorted through. When feelings started to change for both Caleb and Teagan they tried to push them aside. Caleb was only going to be here for a year and then he was going back to England. There was no point in starting something with him. It would only hurt the both of them when he left. However as time goes by they cannot hold back their feelings and they decide to act upon them. The chemistry between them is amazing but there is always the reminder in the back of their mind that the end of the school year will come sooner than the wanted it to. Caleb’s departure is hard on the entire Carroll family. They had become very close to him. With no promises made Caleb and Teagan part ways, vowing to keep in touch. When this does not go as planned they both try to move on, but something is missing. Will Caleb and Teagan find their way back to each other?

Teagan Carroll is 19 and on her first day as a sophomore things go from bad to worse when she is caught using the men’s bathroom where a foul smell is coming from and some British guy blames it all on her. Then the exchange student her family is supposed to have leaves as he is allergic to her cat and the family finds themselves with a new one and it’s none other than the British guy from the bathroom, Caleb Yates.
Soon Teagan finds herself in an email war with Caleb that is going from bad to worse as he corrects her on everything and re-writes it all to how he pleases. Teagan is frustrated to no end but then she finds herself jealous when Caleb starts dating Veronica and he criticizes how Teagan interacts with her own family.
But soon the tension between Teagan and Caleb begins to thaw but Teagan also realizes that Caleb is only here for one year and can she survive her heart being broken when he leaves?
This was such a great book filled with lots of laughs and some serious moments as well to make sure you’re not too comfortable!
Teagan was awesome and the first scene in the bathroom was incredible!! I was laughing so hard but also sympathizing with her as it was awful timing and I can’t say I would have done differently in an emergency! The emails between her and Caleb were so good and I was laughing so hard and I understood why she was so mad at him! I was sad when I learned about Teagan’s mom but give her dad all the credit in the world for doing what he could but I got why she was still a little guarded with her step-mom Maura and even her sister, Shelley
Caleb was a very interesting character as with Teagan he was a stuck up British guy yet with her family he was someone that they all quickly bonded to. His relationship with Veronica appeared one-sided as she was much more interested in him than he was in her but he carried on with her anyhow. I was heartbroken when I learned about his own past and then it made sense why he made certain comments to Teagan.
There was so much attraction between Teagan and Caleb and there was also more on a deeper level between the two but with Caleb leaving both were afraid to get too committed as they knew what was coming. That being said I really enjoyed seeing how much they each grew with each other and in turn with the people around them. I was super sad with the scene at the airport but I crossed my fingers everything w5 Stars – By Tina Review to Come

I was definitely not prepared for all of the next events and I was so mad at Caleb!! I was happy when Teagan really realized what Maura meant to her though!
My heart was happy again with the events of Christmas Eve although still a little frustrated with Caleb! I was proud of Teagan for following her heart! The book took another sharp turn with Emma but I was so proud of how everyone embraced each other and how it brought everyone even closer together!
The end was great and I really was happy with the way it all ended!ould be okay.

I love how Penelope can make her characters fall in love in Just One Year but she can make us fall in love with her characters in Just One Chapter. I absolutely loved this story. Everything thing about it. I loved the slow building friendship that started between Teagan and Caleb. And then when their feelings turned to more before either even realized it…just beautiful.
Caleb really brought Teagan out of her shell and made her a new woman. Teagan helped Caleb realize what an amazing person he truly was.
I read this book in a day because I couldn’t put it down…nor did I want to. I also didn’t want the book to end. Wish it could have gone on forever. Penelope’s books just keep getting better.
I always anticipate when I know a Penelope Ward book will be coming out. As soon as it pops up on my kindle, I drive in. This 6 star story had me reading it in one sitting. It’s that amazing.
Teagan’s family always have exchange students stay with them for the year. A change of plans lands Caleb to this family. The best or worst part depends on Teagan, they already met, in the “Loo”. Just one year will not be enough.
I started reading it on a very slow night at work and all of a sudden, I’m done. I wanted more, so much more. I was so enthralled by this story that it sucked me in and nothing else mattered. It was funny at times and heart shattering too. What makes the best part of a story, in my opinion are the characters. Caleb was funny but also felt deeply. Teagan will discover her true self. She was in a shell but Caleb will slowly bring her out. The development and progression of these characters was beautifully executed. You can literally feel them change. I felt so much for them.
There’s a reason why I love this writer so much, no 2 books are the same or similar. So I’m always baffled by the turn of events and surprised all the time. They are good and meaningful surprises. It’s highly entertaining and captivating. Rest assured this story will give you all the feels. Bottomline this is a must read.
Standalone told in a dual POV with an HEA. I strongly recommend this story. All of this authors books are all well worth the readers precious time and money.
This book is emotional and sexy and sweet. I love that Teagan is a genius and a loner yet closeted extrovert. She doesn’t have time to date and really just wants to be alone anyway, even from her family. Caleb is a hot British college student that I wish would have been around in my days 😉
He’s basically and exchange student that lives with Teagan’s family. You don’t see much of the school part tho. It’s also a super slow burn. The emails are one of my favorite parts of the book.
Overall, if you like slow-burn, angsty, hate-to friend-to lover, emotional college romance, this is the perfect book.
Another great PenWard read 🙂
What a sweet, heart warming read! I really enjoyed Caleb and Teagan’s story. Such a funny meet cute for these too. I would have been mortified if that happened to me! Caleb is super yummy. I imagined the gorgeous cover model, Chase Mattson while reading:) My favorite parts were the emails between Caleb and Teagan and how Caleb would rewrite them. It was hilarious! I love Penelope Ward’s books because they not only have heart, but also humor. There were definitely quite a few times I found myself laughing out loud. I always enjoy her stories. They take me away from my everyday stresses and relax my mind while touching my heart with her endearing storylines and relatable characters. If you are looking for a fun, light read that is not heavy in drama, Just One Year is for you! I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. I highly recommend!

If I were able to, I would have given this book more than five stars. I was 4% in and totally hooked. When I was thrown into a scene that got me all flustered and reaching for that glass of wine to cool down. Wow, it was red hot; he was hot, I was hot! The sexual tension between the two characters was just electric! I cannot express enough how much I enjoyed this book which was well written, has a great story line, and Teagan and Caleb just steamed up the pages. Thank you Penelope for one of the most enjoyable reads I’ve put my hands on this year. And I must add that I read it twice!
Just One Year was another great read by Penelope Ward. I really liked it.
It’s about Caleb, the British exchange student and Teagan, the girl who’s family he lives with it. Caleb was such a great guy. I loved Caleb and Teagan. I loved the way their relationship grew. They had great chemistry! Definitely recommend this!
