From New York Times bestselling author Penelope Ward, comes a new standalone novel. The beginning of my sophomore year in college was off to a rough start. On the first day of orientation, I had an altercation with an infuriating British dude in a campus bathroom. (The ladies’ room was out of order. So, I used the men’s room. Don’t judge.)I got home later that night and realized that the foreign … realized that the foreign student we were expecting to rent a room in my parents’ house was allergic to our cat.
So, the spare room went to someone else: Caleb—the British guy from the men’s room.
And so it began…my love-hate story with Caleb Yates. Or was it hate-love in that order?
The guy knew how to push every one of my buttons.
Sometimes I’d email him to express my aggravation and disdain.
He’d actually rewrite my own words and send them back to me.
That was the type of infuriating person Caleb was.
So frustrating.
And…
Sometimes incredibly funny and endearingly sweet.
And hot.
He eventually grew on me, and Caleb soon became one of my best friends that year.
Too bad he was headed back to England soon, so nothing could happen between us—for so many reasons.
I definitely couldn’t fall in love with him, especially since all we had was just one year.

This is one of the best books i have read all year. Really amazing
I loved this book so much! Penelope has done it again…at this point, I think she is physically incapable of creating anything I won’t absolutely love! This story has a few twists I wasn’t expecting and I definitely sat on the edge of my seat waiting for the happily-ever-after, but once again, she came through. Her stories are always original and you won’t be disappointed with anything she has written! Highly recommend!
Meh. It was all over the place. Even worse, once she arrived in England. Very disappointed as I LOVE this author.
Just One Year, is Penelope Ward’s latest standalone novel. A swoon worthy, slow burn, dual perspective, college romance that will keep you reading into the wee hours of the morning.
Teagan Carrol, a beautiful, intelligent, down to Earth introvert is about to embark on her sophomore year of college. Caleb Yates, a sexy, British foreign exchange student, is attending university in Boston as part of a one-year exchange program. The two have an awkward, embarrassing first meeting which takes place in a men’s bathroom. Teagan is nothing if not relieved, to think she will never run into Caleb again. That is until he shows up at her family’s dinner table later that night.
Teagan’s stepmother applied to host a foreign exchange student in their home for the year. It just so happened that that student was severely allergic to their cat, Catlin Jenner. Yes, insert laughter here, that is the actual name of the family’s cat.
Caleb and Teagan slowly begin to form a genuine friendship with one another. She teaches him about s’mores and tutors him in his studies, he teachers her about family and letting loose every now and then. Together the two form a deep friendship as they help one another overcome their own personal struggles. As the two grow closer to one another, their feelings eventually develop into something more, whether they want to admit it or not. It becomes harder for them to not give in to their growing attraction for one another, but Caleb is only there for the year and it won’t be long before he’s headed back to England.
I’ve read several of Penelope Ward’s books. She is a fabulous storyteller. I found this latest book of hers to be refreshing and a nice change of pace. I was immediately pulled in with the first chapter. The characters are well developed, the story engaging and the chemistry between Teagan and Caleb drips off the pages. This swoon worthy, slow burn, college romance, is unique and well written.
I listened to the audio version of this book, narrated by Andi Arndt and Shane East. They did a great job with the narration and were enjoyable to listen to. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I highly recommend it and I certainly look forward to reading more from this author.
Teagan’s family has decided to host a foreign exchange student for a year. The student they were assigned ended up having allergies and couldn’t stay so they were reassigned Caleb. The hot Brit that she had the misfortune of meeting when she was forced to use the men’s room. That awkward exchange and some choice words Caleb had when he first moved in got them off on the wrong foot. They were able to work out their differences and became friends. While Teagan was tutoring Caleb they ended up becoming close and bonding over their past issues/traumas. This bond makes them realize that they both want more than just friendship but it is only temporary because he goes back to England at the end of the semester.
I really really wanted to like this one but it just was a miss for me. The blurb makes you think that they have a year together but they don’t. He has a gf for the first 46% of the book and once they break up, Caleb and Teagan still don’t move past friends for another 20% of the book and then he leaves a couple chapters after that. I didn’t want to read about Caleb being with another girl for a majority of the book. I wanted to read about them being together and there wasn’t a whole lot of that. And I didn’t really like the characters, I couldn’t relate or connect with them. This one had potential to be really good but it was a miss for me.
I enjoyed this book. There wasn’t anything life shattering about it, but it was a well written and entertaining story. I enjoyed the email exchanges between Caleb and Teagan and wished there would have been a little more of them. I’d recommend this book if you need something to pass the time.
Two things about this book that got me hooked.
1. Enemies to Lovers
2. A British accent. Gah…there is just so something about a British accent!
The way Caleb and Teagan met was horrifying, yet hilarious. Once Teagan and Caleb hit the reset button, they built a really beautiful friendship that blossomed into more. Watching the bond these two built, the trust is something all relationships should strive to have.
Another great book to add to the collection!
College exchange student from England romance with the daughter of the familyhe is living with. Slow burn
I am in constant wonder on how Ward creates these beautiful characters. At times they are broken, but when you mix in her unique charm, romance and likable characters, you simply cannot go wrong.
”Not bad for a love story that started in the loo.”
Another hit from Penelope Ward!
You will be wanting just one more page!
Or one more chapter… or two!! This is another fantastic read from this amazing author. This was an incredible sweet and utterly endearing story between British exchange student Caleb and Teagan, the daughter of his exchange family. When they first meet, things are not so smooth as Teagan is completely affronted by Caleb’s brash, in-your-face attitude. Each one has deep levels of guilt, fear, and insecurity regarding the events that have transpired in their lives, but fate keeps bringing them together and the evolution of their relationship is intense, sincere, overwhelming and all encompassing. It will leave you gutted and uplifted, sometimes at the same time. A truly fantastic read with well-written and engaging characters and an intense, heartfelt storyline. There is something for everyone! Simply another great read from an amazing author!
This book had me hooked from Caleb and Teagan’s first encounter which was hands down hilarious! If you enjoy a witty college romance, enemies to friends to lovers then you will want to grab this book NOW! These two got off to a rocky start but in the end their relationship grew to more and had me cheering these two on for their happily ever after!
Penelope Ward once again delivers an emotionally beautiful story that will make you fall in love right along with the main characters. It’s funny and sweet but you’ll definitely shed a tear or two so be prepared with those tissues!
British exchange student Caleb is all of your teenage fantasies come true. Sexy, funny, charismatic all wrapped up with a killer accent. It’s no wonder Teagan couldn’t help but fall in love with him! Caleb is everything you hope for in a hero, complete with a sensitive side that will make you melt. I sure as heck swooned something fierce! He’s a little bit lost, trying to find his place in the world and decide which direction his life will take. Teagan is also lost, living at home with her father, step-mother and step-sister but unsure how she fits into their world. Her past has defined her present and future and she’s stuck behind some pretty steep walls that she has erected. When Caleb comes to live with Teagan’s family, the two forge a beautiful friendship and, eventually a relationship of sorts. I loved watching these two beautiful souls heal one another. Of course nothing is easy as Caleb is only living in America for a year. What will become of their budding relationship? Will they find their way back to one another after they’re separated? There’s a happily ever after on the horizon for these two but you’ll have to read the story to see how it plays out. 4.5 stars
I absolutely love this latest book by Penelope Ward. Teagan and Caleb were such a great pair. I not only read the book but I listened to it on audio as well. Could not pass up Shane East narrating the part of Caleb. This book was full angst, a budding friendship and a connection between Teagan and Caleb that was indescribable. Once they opened up to one another and discovered even though their backgrounds growing up were different they still dealt with the same issues all of us face. This book is so entertaining and very well written. I could not put it down at times. I had to find out what would happen next. There were some very sweet parts to the book. I loved the connection Teagan made with Emma and how she was able to become closer to her sister; Shelly. My heart went out to Caleb and all he was dealing with with his father and what happened to his sister Emma. How he felt it was somehow his fault and why he wanted to come and study in the US. These two were able to help one another and from there the connection grew into a deep love. I loved the HEA they were able to find and how that came about. I highly recommend this book!
Ok, not my favourite Penelope Ward book but the storyline had enough substance in it to keep me interested and invested in it till the end. I liked both the main characters, Teagan Carroll and Caleb Yates. I thought the manner in which they met was hilarious and very unusual. It seems as though fate had huge plans for these two lovers, and even though they were pulled apart at one point in their relationship, their Love for each other was too strong to keep them apart.
The storyline was sweet, with not too many unexpected twists and turns in it. I thought the secondary characters were great. I loved Teagan’s family, especially Maura, her stepmom. She was everything a caring mother aught to be: loving, supportive, thoughtful, respectful and kind.
My heart bled for the Yates family and the tragedy they were dealt with. I thought Penelope handled this aspect of the book really well.
All in all, I thought the book was okay. A great easy read but definitely not one of my favourites. Give it a read and see what you think.
Not a fan! Sure, this author makes sure to cover all the elements, But in a very simple narrative as if it is merely stating… Facts – with only the necessary few emotions… which is more pronounced in the conversations between older secondary characters. This type of story was eye-opening in a way that reinforces my dislike for… normal romance!
Teagan has an unfortunate encounter with a hot British guy in a bathroom that leaves her shaken. She goes home a few hours later to find that the new foreign exchange student her parents have taken in is Caleb, the guy she had the altercation with.
This is an enemies to friends to lovers story. It has a bit of a slow burn element to it. I loved the details that Penelope Ward put in the story and it was fun to see Teagan and Caleb’s relationship progressing. They became best friends before becoming anything else.
Unfortunately, the last third of the book really fell apart for me. The end seemed really rushed and it didn’t hang very well. It was frustrating given how well the story developed during the first half of the book.
Loved it! One of Ward’s best!!
Ahhhh I’m in love with this story !!!! It was absolutely amazing adventure !!!
I adore Penelope Ward and Her books for a while and I can assure every reader – nothing has changed since the day no1. With every new book this author prooving again and again – she is only getting better.

I felt deep in my heart ever breathtaking moment, every tear, every laugh….. gahh It was amazing journey but just like with other mrs Ward’s books – You need to be prepared for an emotional ride.

Highly recommendet title.
Caleb and Teagan.
An unexpected whirlwind romance with an angsty-twisty happily-ever-after. In the beginning, you’ll laugh while these two navigate a beautiful friendship to fated lovers. Anxiously awaiting each moment of emotional escapades and flirtatious bits both friendly and intimate. This book is full of all the feels and romance one could ask for. Caleb is a young man with broken pieces and Teagan is wonder of unique brilliance and battered hope in those who love her. However, these two breathe life into one another again even as changes and revelations come to pass. They save each other and every second until their lifetime begins again together is so beautiful your heart will ache. Watching them grow, learn, struggle, and triumph together resonates and you will feel a song of love in your soul. Everything. This story is everything.
Let me start by telling you that you are going to love CALEB!!! PW did it again. She wrote a beautiful story that will melt your heart. I couldn’t put it down.
The banter between Teagan and Caleb was so much fun. Who would have thought that an encounter in the toilet would lead to a romantic, heartwarming and emotional story?
Teagan is a strong willed, , clever and funny woman who puts up a good front about not allowing her emotions to consume her.
Caleb had me at hello. His outgoing personality is endearing but we soon find out that he has his own secret…
You could feel the connection between them. It was funny, sweet and sexy at the same time. Once again PW has wooed me with her words and her characters. I love the banter between them, I love their vulnerability, I love their connection and more importantly I love how they get each other.
