A little too New York
By the time the words are used they are unnecessary. The declaration should be the best bit. A guy should tear his heart out and hand it to her. But New York novels have a tendency to dance around the L word and commitment til the reader doesn’t care anymore. Plus I need more angst, possessiveness and longing. It’s a personal failing but I need the solid manly man to loose his mind over the idea that she won’t be there. Dude, it’s my favorite specific trope and Ty missed it.
Five single male friends open Flatiron Five Fitness Club. One partner, Tyler McKay is too busy securing his financial future to pursue a serious relationship, but he needs a fake date to his sister’s wedding—one whereby no expectations follow. Shannyn Hawke is set to take freelance pics for the club, and thinks Tyler won’t remember her or her belittling remarks from her days of secretly crushing on him during college. Tyler wants to prove she has misconceptions about him and a deal is struck involving a fake date. The problem is, he likes her unpredictability and wants to get to know her better and she is positive she has him all figured out. I enjoyed the story well enough but downgraded it because I shouldn’t like the hero so much more than the heroine. It is understandable if a hero takes a long time to get to know and like her but not as desirable for the reader to take a long time to connect and understand her. She is supposed to be smart but she makes so many assumptions… That said, I think it is good that the heroine is not typical in other ways. The romance does seem a bit too fast to be so believable, but the unexpectedness of the romance was good. I like enough of the secondary characters to continue with the series. The Flatiron Five Fitness series: Just One More Time, Bk 2 (Kyle & Lauren), Just One Night Together, Bk 3 (Damon & Haley), Just One Hometown Hero, Bk 4 (Cassie & Reid), Two Weddings and a Baby (an F5F Novella), Just One Second Chance, Bk 6 (Theo & Lyssa), Just One Silver Fox, Bk 7 (Jax & Pierce)
enjoyed reading this – great dialog between the characters
I loved this book. And all of the ones in the series. Couldn’t put them down.
I read this book many years ago and enjoyed it enough to reread it.
I don’t like that you can’t find original publication dates on ebooks.
thanks
I loved this book!!! So much that I’m up to the 6th in the series! And I’ve read them all in like 3 days (between everything else).
Highly recommend!
Flatiron Five Fitness series is great! This is Tyler and Shannyn’s story. I totally enjoyed it. His mother is one heck of a piece of work. Driving him to the exact woman his mom doesn’t want. Her Ex has left her in pieces. But, fate keeps giving them (Tyler and Shannyn; not the jerk x) reasons to connect. They are very much the modern casual sex generation. Actually, the sex was well written. I usually skip those sections, but these were good in depth of who the pair are. Now looking forward to next story! (I have read on F5F before, just can’t recall which one).
04/22/2021 Deborah A. Cooke has demonstrated her writing skills with “Just One Fake Date” (nook). In November 2019 I read her original version, “Simply Irresistible,” and I rated it as 4-1/2 stars. “Just One Fake Date” is so much better that I was unable to put it down until I finished. Romance, angst, self-doubt, determination – all lead to a heartwarming HEA.
I might even be tempted to rate “Just One Fake Date” as 6 stars.
Another great story from one of my favorite authors. I loved the dynamic between the two characters. And the ending was phenomenal! A surprise that totally made the story perfect.
Wonderful characters make this story fun-filled and passionate. The dialogue is brilliant and moves the story along.
I enjoyed this book and works like to continue the series. I like how she finally gets her man
I just came across this author. This is my first read and must say I like it. A lot!
Was given an ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
Shannyn Hawke is a live in the moment kind of girl.
She has been hired to take pictures of a gym called Flatiron Five Fitness. However one of the members is Tyler McKay who she had insulted while in college.
Tyler McKay is one of the members of F5F. One of the things that Tyler remembers is Shannyn telling him that he was a smug entitled a-hole.
Shannyn is willing to go on a fake date with Tyler in exchange for a night of sex.
Must read to find out what happens.
This is an old book with a new title and cover. I enjoyed The Flatiron Five but I’m glad that I recognized the plot. They’re good reads but I hate buying a book only to find out that the only thing new is the name.
Just One Fake Date is the first book in the Deborah Cooke’s Flatiron 5 Fitness Series. This is a contemporary romance that leans to the wild side in the relationship. However, the fake dating trope worked well for this couple even though their past did not end well. It could also be considered an enemies to somewhat friendship to love type of story.
Shannyn Hawke is much more complicated then she first lets on. Her dreams haven’t panned out as well as Tyler’s but she is on the road with readjusted ones. Then Tyler McKay through his interactions with family members and his best friends is also seen as more than an arrogant workaholic. As the fast-paced story progresses, the characters show that they are more complex and not so easily pegged as you might first think. There is growth in both characters as well as in their relationship which is always an important aspect of the story.
It is a quick read but the background of Tyler and his friends/business partners is given, making the way for future books in the series.
The publisher/author gave me a complimentary ARC of the book which I voluntarily chose to read and reviewed. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I couldn’t put it down! I loved the story and the chemistry between Ty and Shannyn. This story is supposed to be a rewrite of Simply Irresistible, but it reads and feels like a completely different book. I devoured it in one sitting and my only wish was that there was more so I could enjoy their company for a while longer. The author does a great job of weaving odd bits of details into her stories that make them more robust and fuller, and the characters realistic.
JUST ONE FAKE DATE is the first instalment in Deborah Cooke’s contemporary, adult FLATIRON FIVE FITNESS erotic, romance series focusing on the five friends -owners and proprietors of the exclusive Manhattan fitness club Flatiron Five Fitness-Tyler, Kyle, Damon, Cassie, and Theo. This is Flatiron Five Fitness part owner and financial consultant Tyler McKay, and photographer Shannyn Hawke’s story line.
NOTE: JUST ONE FAKE DATE is the rebranding and rewritten story line of Tyler McKay first introduced in the original SIMPLY IRRESISTIBLE. The author has reworked and reimagined Tyler’s story so that it no longer resembles the original release including a new heroine whose personality is in complete opposition to the one before.
Told from several third person perspectives including Tyler and Shannyn JUST ONE FAKE DATE follows the building relationship and romance between former college classmates Flatiron Five Fitness part owner and financial consultant Tyler McKay, and photographer Shannyn Hawke. Shannyn Hawke’s latest assignment finds her face to face with a part of her past she had hoped to forget. The odd woman out in a class of beautiful and sexy students Shannyn discovered that she was the only woman whom Tyler and his group of friends never considered worthy of their time. Fast forward twelve years wherein Shannyn is offered an opportunity to photograph the owners and members at Flatiron Five Fitness, an opportunity that finds our heroine falling in love with the man who had once broken her heart. Tyler McKay, along with his business partner Kyle Stuyvesant vaguely remembered our heroine but something about Shannyn pulled at Tyler’s rapidly beating heart. A one-night stand proved not to be enough for our story line hero so Tyler made Shannyn an offer she couldn’t refuse- a fake date for his sister’s wedding in exchange for a few weeks together to keep his mother and sisters at bay. What ensues is the acrimonious but building relationship between Tyler and Shannyn, and the potential fall-out as Shannyn struggles with past heart break and pain, and the realization that she is on the outside looking in as it pertains to the McKay family dynamics.
JUST ONE FAKE DATE is a Cinderella story. Shannyn struggles to make ends meet, and Tyler is a man of wealth and stature. Shannyn is a strong-willed, independent and oft-times exasperating heroine who needs to be in control of her destiny and her life. Tyler McKay knows to stop his mother from harassing him about his love life, he is going to need to act fast, and Shannyn is the perfect foil to his mother’s need to control his life but Shannyn refuses to draw outside the lines, and in this sets a set of rules to be adhered, rules that Tyler is determined to break.
The relationship between Tyler and Shannyn is a frenemies to lovers in which Shannyn battles between head and heart. Having suffered heart break in the past, Shannyn refuses to be placed in a situation where she could once again, lose her heart to a man who is unable to see beyond the truth, and in this, Shannyn is determined to take control, having the upper hand when it comes to losing her heart. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.
There is a large ensemble cast of colorful secondary and supporting characters including Tyler McKay’s partner at Flatiron Five Fitness: Kyle Stuyvesant, Cassie Wilson, Theo Tremblay, and Damon Perez: Tyler’s sisters Stephanie, Lauren, Paige and her husband Derek, Katelyn, and their parents Jeffery and Colleen McKay; Shannyn’s brother Aidan, and her best friend Kirsten.
JUST ONE FAKE DATE is a story of family, friendships, business and love; of heart beak and revelations; of acceptance and hope The premise is engaging and inviting; the characters are stubborn, quirky, and energetic; the romance is spicy and moving.
Tyler McKay, one of the founding members of Flatiron Five Fitness, is desperate to blunt his Mother’s incessant attempts at matchmaking, and having a date to his sister’s wedding in a few weeks is part of his plan. When Shannyn Hawke, a young woman he briefly knew at college many years ago, appears at the fitness club for a photo shoot, Tyler throws caution to the wind and agrees to an outrageous deal where she would be his fake date for the event. The fact that Shannyn seems to enjoy provoking Tyler intrigues him, as he struggles to change her long ago opinion of him. As secrets are revealed, past histories told and obstacles hurdled, Tyler and Shannyn move closer to their eventual HEA. As usual with Ms. Cooke, her stories are well written, pulling you into the characters’ lives from the first page, and unwilling to let you go after the last page. I highly recommend this book. A copy of this book was provided to me with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read this book and my comments here are my honest opinion.
This was a very well-written, entertaining book. Shannyn is living in the moment, and a work assignment brings her to a meeting with her college crush. Tyler is working on a plan for his future and has no time for relationships. He needs a pretend date to his sister’s wedding and Shannyn agrees, in exchange for a night of satisfaction. The chemistry between the two was clear, and there was plenty of humor too. This book can be read as a standalone story, though it is the first in a series. I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more books by this author.
Wow what a great book and start of a series! I am just delighted by Deborah reworking this opening book to her Flatiron 5 series because it’s just FABULOUS! Her stories just keep getting better with each release. I can’t wait to reread the series. That’s saying something as I hardly ever reread anything!
Tyler McKay is in a bind. He needs a date to his sister’s wedding and everyone he dates seems to be a golddigger. Then there’s his mother who is determined all of her five children have to be married asap and start producing grandchildren. She is in a competition with her sister and she’s behind. Ty is a catch as he’s one of the 5 partners in Manhattan’s hot fitness club Flatiron Five Fitness, all friends from college. He’s also the only one with a day job. He’s day job is at Fleming Financial and he’s the finance guy of F5F. When he sees Shannyn Hawke walk into F5F he knows he’s found his perfect fake date for the wedding since he knows she hates him, if he can convince her to do it.
Shannyn Hawke is a freelance photographer who’s been asked to take on a quick job for her college Alumni magazine. She’s on deadline but she needs the money to reroof her house. She remembers these partners from college. She actually told Tyler exactly what she thought of the “smug entitled a$$hole” at an end of year party. When he approaches her with his proposition she makes a deal with him. She had a huge crush on him in college and now is her chance to see what she’s been missing so they make a deal…you gotta read the book to find out what and how many deals they end up making! It’s good believe me.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced readers copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
