Author D.L. Finn’s diverse poetry collection Just Her Poetry is full of reflection, creativeness, and soul searching. The book is divided into nature poetry, the seasons, poetry written by her while riding on the back of a Harley, and emotional contemplations.
I enjoyed every poem in this book; although, the poems about nature and the seasons were my favorite. The heartfelt poems in this section reflect her love of nature. It seemed the author drew inspiration from nature to impart hope. As an animal lover, I enjoyed the poems “The Dog Stare” and “The Huntress.”
The poems in the other sections were meaningful and thought provoking. One poem in particular, “Your Words,” struck a chord with me in a positive way.
D.L. Finn’s free-style poetry is genuine, vibrant, and full of imagery. Her words came to life in living color in my head, invoking a plethora of emotions. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys beautiful poetry.
Just Her Poetry: Seasons of a Soul by D.l.Finn lays bare the beauty of Spring, which is welcomed by her in the company of her furry friends who gather around her to rejoice in the bliss of blooming trees and gentle breeze. With a touch of realism, her nature verses invite you to recline on a chair, forget all fears, listen to the sounds of birds, feel the love and rejuvenate your soul. Finn meets the bees, the butterflies, the dragonflies and hummingbirds with a child-like charm and records her reflections so well that I got transported to her garden to hear those songs of bees.
Finn’s poetry is like soaking in the splendor of music, each note original and fresh; each emotion spontaneous and convincing. I could relate to her bike rides, which took me down the memory lane, reliving moments of my own delight with each ride, ‘flying through the landscape’ on her Harley, she took me across mountains and rivers, ‘majestically crossing the mighty Yuba river,’ as if life is just an idyllic journey.
She does come back to the coarser realities of life, talks about anguish and worry but inspires you to dismiss them by cleaning the closet of your mind. Her poems stem more from observation than imagination, some of them seem to relate stories.
These poems would mesmerize you, make you appreciate nature, inspire you to have a closer look at the beauty around us and be happy with whatever life offers.
This is a beautiful collection of poetry with vivid glimpses into the natural world and the many myriad nuances of emotion. The reader is even treated to “musings from the back of a Harley” as the author shares visions penned while riding with her husband on their bike. I was especially enthralled by the nature poetry which is broken into sections for Spring and Summer as well as Fall and Winter.
Sights, sounds and senses come alive in poems like A Day at the River, Thunk, Crisp, and Spring Gone. As a cat lover I also really enjoyed The Huntress which was rendered in such attention to detail it was equivalent to viewing a live-action video. The prose is beautiful and vivid. Some of my favorite lines include:
From Spring Day
The gentle tapping of the woodpecker
Reminding me of a blessing in Morse code.
From Mist
It is a time of in-between.
Between the sun baking the earth
Or the forest being covered in ice.
From The October Sun:
The October sun bleeds through the trees
Clotting up before it reaches me.
There are so many gems in this book, you’re certain to find your own favorites. So escape to a peaceful setting, and let this exquisite collection of poetry soothe your soul.
The perfect accompaniment to the sweet scents of spring! I read this while sitting outside with birds singing and a soft breeze tinkling the chimes. The author leads the reader on a journey through the forest around her and the way it can heal the soul.
Many of the passages are obviously personal. I could sense pain, peace, and a timeless sense of how much Ms Finn connects with the world around her.
Some of my favorite lines:
The blue skies showcase the beauty… In an abstract painting of an untamed scene.
Just Her Poetry: Seasons of the Soul by D. L. Finn
It is a day for new beginnings…a new seed A place to plant buried dreams in the stars
Just Her Poetry: Seasons of the Soul by D. L. Finn
As I reach for the stars with my dreams Spring reminds me that all is possible if you just plant it.
Just Her Poetry: Seasons of the Soul by D. L. Finn
Soothing and inspiring, this book will definitely be a great addition to anyone’s reread shelf!
Just Her Poetry Seasons of a Soul by D.L. Finn is a collection of poetic paintings of nature through the seasons. The vivid imagery creates a virtual reality for the readers to share the author’s experience. Sitting on her deck bathed in the warm sun, surrounded by sky-reaching cedar, redwood, and Douglas fir trees, Finn observed the colorful flowers, bees, birds, and quietly watched the animals while accompanied by her pets. As a nature lover, it’s a privilege to be in the company with the author to appreciate the beauty of nature. This poetry is also an honest outpour of the author’s deep emotions through her states and stages of life. It reflects the anguish, pain, fear, anger, dilemma, love, acceptance, strength and hope. Poetry lovers will enjoy the refreshing songs of nature and the heart.
My favorite lines from Spring and Summer:
The gentle breeze…
Blows away the remnants of winter.
The blue skies showcase the beauty…
In an abstract painting of an untamed scene.
My favorite lines from Fall and Winter:
My soul sways like the trees,
Both rooted firmly in the ground.
Water pours out of the sky.
The winds pound furiously.
Trees bending, but not breaking.
They ride the storm out.
Then, in the silence, the snow.
A temporary frozen situation.
That soon disappears back into fall.
My favorite poem from Emotions
PIECES
You are always safe here I try to reassure.
Your eyes flicker with hope for a brief moment,
But suspicion quickly replaces that hope
I know your trust is hard to come by.
Yours has been shattered into many pieces.
I cannot find all those pieces—yet.
I won’t give up though until I return them to you.
I’ll find a way to relight the hope in your youthful eyes.
Bit by bit I will search with as much help as I can find.
It’s not going to be easy, but that doesn’t stop me.
Others may give up—I won’t.
Because I know once you are safe and loved
Some day…some day…the light will shine again.
All your pieces will be put back together.
And all of you can be whole once again.
This book, packed with exquisite poems, is divided into two main sections, namely, Just her poetry about nature and the author’s experiences investigating sites of natural beauty from her seat behind the driver of a Harley and Seasons of a soul which includes a variety of passionate and evocative poems about the author’s emotional state during various experiences and circumstances she has faced during her life.
I was attracted particularly to the second section of poems and was captivated by the author’s depictions and descriptions of the states and stages of life. I selection of my favourite lines are as follows:
“I am alone
Yet the voices from my past sit with me.
They can haunt me – or comfort me.”
From Now
“It’s time to let go of the things I’ve collected.
Leaving room for my heart to shine through my smile.
Then my peace will be complete within my soul.”
From Simply Gone
And this extract from my favourite poem:
“I’m figuring out why I keep repeating the same issue over and over,
Like walking by a shoe in the middle of the room, tripping over it daily,
But not moving it or even taking another route so I don’t fall over that shoe.
Then it became guilt for me, always been there, while I kept tripping on it.”
From The Shoe.
This particular poem really spoke to me and I could relate to it completely. That, for me an avid reader of poetry, is a rare and wonderful thing.
I’ve been curious for some time to read D.L Finn’s work. In fact, she has so many enticing novels, short stories, and poetry to choose from it was quite a job to decide on which to try first. I opted for Just Her Poetry, it is a sweeping poetry book with part one focusing on poems about nature, the seasons, and musings from the back of a Harley! Part Two is entitled Seasons of A Soul and expresses the author’s emotionally poignant poems about her experiences in darkness and light. There is a bonus section of Some Readers’ Favourites and bonus poetry too.
It’s a lovely book of poetry, so personal and moving. It’s almost as if you are sharing a day out with the author sharing her life, loves and sorrows via her words. In the author note at the end she mentions how nature inspires her writing. I am the same; I loved it. I particularly enjoyed the section of poems written on the back of her husband’s Harley motorbike! Journeying, seeing little details, observational poetry at its best. And some special mentions of poems that I particularly related to: Fingers of The Sea, Trees, Ocean, (as the sea is my spiritual home and I adore trees!)
My recommendation: A wonderful collection of poetry. Highly recommended.
JUST HER POETRY by D.L. Finn is a lovely collection of poetry that spans the breadth of heartfelt emotions. Reading this book is a delectable experience. I particularly loved Musing From The Back Of A Harley because I found the experience of traveling with Finn on the back of a motorcycle to be exhilarating. I felt the wind, saw the movement of passing scenes, and heard the road sounds. Extraordinary.
In the section entitled The Emotions: Darkness and Light, Finn writes about Together. Her verse captured my sentiments. “We’re together for this instant that will go on forever. It’s carefully placed in my memories, where my dreams come true. Together…even distance doesn’t keep us apart. Together…is where our souls remain. Together…always in these moments.”
Yes…together always. Five Stars!
Finn offers a generous supply of poetry to while away the hours. Part One of this collection focuses on the author’s love of nature and her peaceful moments of reflection when enjoying the world outside. It includes a number of selections based on motorcycle roadtrips through sunshine and beautiful scenery. Part Two is entitled Seasons of the Soul and focuses on a wide range of personal emotions from dark to light, including feelings of loss, anxiety, yearning, self-discovery, and love.
As a whole, the tone of the collection is positive with an emphasis on self-awareness, gratefulness, respect, and personal growth. A lovely book for readers who especially enjoy uncomplicated, sincere, and uplifting poetry. One of the author’s nature poems that I enjoyed:
Waves
The waves glide smoothly on top
Of the salty surface, proudly…
Blending against the azure
Until they merge together profoundly.
Their roar precedes them…
As they hit land—this is where it ends…
They are positive, but they are wrong…
That was only their birth, now the journey begins.
The first section of poems brings me to a place of peace. The author shows us her love of nature. “Palm trees gently swaying around me. The surging surf attracts my attention. Wave after wave reaches out to hypnotize me. It deposits its essence onto the rocky shore. My shoulders…slacken. My attention…absolved. My soul..smiles.” As the pages continue, I can feel a calmness enter my body.
In the poems of Fall and Winter, the storm arrives with bone-chilling cold. Goodbye to the sun and hello to the rain. Musings From the Back of a Harley brings adventure with the wind and changing landscapes. While the section, Darkness and Light, makes you ponder on the whys of the world. The author explores sadness and pain. The Book World gives readers the taste of family and vacations.
There is a poem for every season and emotion.
This book was such an amazing collection of verse. I can’t begin to say how much I enjoyed it. Every piece was well written, but the section on nature was truly outstanding. The references to nature were like sinking into meditation. I follow this author and believe it to be her best work yet . The Journey was my favorite poem.
Thumbs up.
