Like countless others in 1931, Samuel Wortham lost his job. And he lost his wife’s inheritance, their home, and much of his self-respect. Samuel, his wife, Julia, and their two young children hitchhike from Pennsylvania to Illinois in hope of work. Caught on the road by a sudden storm, the Worthams take shelter in an abandoned farmhouse out of desperation.
Feeling oddly at home, Julia insists on … insists on finding the owner of the property, despite Samuel’s objections, and asks for permission to stay. The owner is Emma Graham, a woman in her eighties who longs for home but can no longer live by herself. Emma and the Worthams work out a plan to live there together and restore the farm. Samuel struggles with not being able to provide for his family, and Julia and the kids confront unpleasant surprises when a busybody neighbor turns against them.
Julia’s Hope is an endearing story of faith and faithfulness as Emma teaches the Worthams to live fully, give generously, and love unconditionally. She insists that the family grow where they are planted, like the garden they tend, and each member of the family is forever changed by her wisdom.

Couldn’t put it down. Loved the whole series.
Enjoyed reading this book. The characters give you hope, especially in one of the more difficult times. You really see the good in people. Helps one remember how you want to be remembered and you can’t take it with you.
A great, inspirational, thought-provoking story; first in a wonderful series.
A story of good folks in bad times who had to make do for food, shelter and work.
Yet, they had hearts of gold and shared whatever came their way with love, a new wonderful friend and hope. A sad but a story of life in the olden days when times were so terribly tough. It’s a great read.
Loved this book. It give’s hope in humankind caring for one another.
I really enjoyed reading this story. Made me happy to think that there are such good people in the world.
I loved the perspective of a family in need–how it feels to be in that position, at the mercy of those around who have the choice to be kind or mean, loving or judgmental. The story itself is inspirational with lessons for all of us in a position to choose how we treat those in need, not just in difficult economic times but at all times.
I loved experiencing what it was like during the depression. Well written and not predictable. Good characters. I went ahead and bought the rest of the books in the series and enjoyed them as well.
I loved it. The characters reminded me of stories I had heard about my mother’s childhood as a child of the depression.
Very good read! Read five more of her books.
Good to read a book like this. Encourages us to live right and treat others kindly.
This story is a Christian story based on the Depression and how folks survive. But it is much more than that. I makes you cheer on the characters.
This book brought the depression to life in characters. The story started with a family that the Father had lost his as did many others in that day and they started out to visit another family member who thought there were jobs to be had, much to their dismay as they traveled on foot with two small children, they learned there was not any jobs …
The wife’s faith in God’s guidance is inspiring!
One of the best books I’ve read for quite some time.
I loved this book. Am now reading the second in the series as I want to continue to follow these characters to see what life hands them next and how they handle it
A great story about love & giving
Touching story. Finding hope, facing life while finding strengths they didn’t know they possessed. Accepting death as an end to a good life. Really enjoyed getting to know these characters.
It spoke to life and how people who are willing to go into the unknown and with God’s strength survive in very tough circumstances.
