A St. Louis widow named Irma Rombauer took her life savings and self-published a book called The Joy of Cooking in 1931. Her daughter Marion tested recipes and made the illustrations, and they sold their mother-daughter project from Irma’s apartment.

My first cookbook, my grandmother used this cookbook and I have given copies to both of my children. With this reminder, I will send copies to my grown grandboys as well! A must for every kitchen!
When you need a GREAT RECIPE this is the book to check for inspiration and information!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It contains recipes from around the world, it will teach you how to use new ingredients for spectacular results!!!!!!!!!
The 1975 edition is my go-to cookbook – not only for recipes, but for advice.
Using it a lot despite being able google all and every recipe I’m interested in. It is the “go to” book.
This is a classic. It should be in everyone’s kitchen whether you cook or not.
Reference book and basic recipes….all good!
Best cookbook ever
I still recommend this book for new cooks as a wicked good basic go to cookbook. If nothing else use it to research to create your own version of a recipe.
A classic
Far better cooking resources out there
I received my first copy of this book when I was a child. It has been my favorite cookbook for over 40 years. Every home cook MUST have this book in his/her kitchen. In addition to great recipes, it has lots of definitions, techniques, skills, etc. Many of my favorite kitchen “adventures” involve degrees of success with recipes in this book. I would never even consider having a kitchen sans the book!
Get it. Gift it. Use it. You’ll love it!
Can be complex to understand. Good for starting point to create your own recipes
Electronic version of my well worn broken spined missing pages copy.
If you only have one cook book this should be it. It is a cooking Bible.
Excellent as a reference book on every cooking topic. Every household should have one of these. I have the original and revised versions
Best all to,e cookbook, a great place for everyone to start!
It’s a classic. Has a prime location in my collection of over 400 cookbooks!
Best basic cookbook for beginners…and those who want to improve their general cooking knowledge. I found the “know your ingredients” sections particularly helpful as a young cook. Confession: I have my grandmother’s, my motber’s, and two of my own versions.
Have it also in hard copy!
I bought this a million years ago and it still occupies a spot on my cookbook shelf. While it does, indeed, contain many wonderful recipes, I mainly value it for the advice it gives in tacking a huge array of cooking challenges, from how to truss a turkey to the best way to make various sauces. It’s particularly helpful if you are not an exceptionally experience cook. I consulted it constantly in my 30’s, 40’s, and into my 50’s. I’m in my 60’s now and look less often. However, did I get my money’s worth? Oh, yeah!
