A St. Louis widow named Irma Rombauer took her life savings and self-published a book called The Joy of Cooking in 1931. Her daughter Marion tested recipes and made the illustrations, and they sold their mother-daughter project from Irma’s apartment.

A book of basics and more that should be a foundation cookbook for everyone.
I have owned this book for years. I recently ordered a second copy for our second home. Lots of simple recipes and a great reference.
Great basic cookbook!
If you want to feel good about what you are cooking for you and your family, this is the cookbook you want.
Great cookbook. I received my first copy from my grandma when I foolishly got married at 17. This book was a life saver. It has instructions for the basic cooking techniques through complex recipes. If you cannot cook at all, this book will teach you. If you are an experienced cook, this book is a fountain of knowledge that will expand your cooking skills. I have gone through several copies of this book and never want to be without it. I highly recommend it to anyone who has to do any cooking. It covers every meal and snacks and dessert and baking. It is the one cookbook I would have if I could only have one for the rest of my life. I have many, many cookbooks but this one is the one I have used the most.
Great basics cook book. A reference book that should be in every kitchen.
Must have
If you only have one book in your kitchen, make it this one! I’ve read (yes I read them) at least one hundred cookbooks. I love the ideas presented in other books and enjoy their photos, but when I want to cook – and always have great results – I open the Joy of Cooking. I’ve loved this book for 30+ years. The recipes are excellent, well written and easy to follow. Throughout the book you also find helpful details about ingredients and techniques. My favorite part of Joy of Cooking – the index! You can look up any ingredient and find numerous results! I can always find something to prepare with that one random ingredient I have in my fridge.
Cant have a complete kitchen without this book on your shelf!
Received this as a wedding gift and let it languish on the shelf for some time because it looked too intimidating. Then during a long power outage I pulled it down, curled up with a camp lantern, cup of something hot, and started paging through. It’s a veritable gold mine of everything one needs to become an accomplished cook. From learning how to pick the best cuts at the butcher or how to cut your own, to finest pastries, this is overflowing with delicious foods. My husband loves simple food and I had thought this a bit fancy, but honestly, the food is great, wonderful fare honest enough for every family meal, and yet impressive enough to satisfy even the grandest of guests.
The be all end all of cookbooks
Great reference cook book but hard to navigate for many recipes. Turn to this page for that part of the recipe and to another page for something else. Almost need a copy machine, sizzors, and glue to paste up a recipe that can be followed. Hardly ever use this book but comfortable knowing I have it for a reference.
Lots of common sense cooking knowledge
