Working with the British Secret Service on an undercover mission, Maisie Dobbs is sent to Hitler’s Germany in this thrilling tale of danger and intrigue—the twelfth novel in Jacqueline Winspear’s New York Times bestselling “series that seems to get better with each entry” (Wall Street Journal). It’s early 1938, and Maisie Dobbs is back in England. On a fine yet chilly morning, as she walks towards … morning, as she walks towards Fitzroy Square—a place of many memories—she is intercepted by Brian Huntley and Robert MacFarlane of the Secret Service. The German government has agreed to release a British subject from prison, but only if he is handed over to a family member. Because the man’s wife is bedridden and his daughter has been killed in an accident, the Secret Service wants Maisie—who bears a striking resemblance to the daughter—to retrieve the man from Dachau, on the outskirts of Munich.
The British government is not alone in its interest in Maisie’s travel plans. Her nemesis—the man she holds responsible for her husband’s death—has learned of her journey, and is also desperate for her help.
Traveling into the heart of Nazi Germany, Maisie encounters unexpected dangers—and finds herself questioning whether it’s time to return to the work she loved. But the Secret Service may have other ideas. . . .

suspenceful.
liked it!
I recommend it mainly just because I like the Maisie Dobbs series. This isn’t one of the best, but it good to have Maisie back.
My only problem is 21st century morals in 1930-40s time frame. Good spy story.
I love this character and how the historical period surrounding WW2 is tied into the series of books.
Excellent story set amidst the beginnings of WWII.
Historical setting in pre WWII Munich made this an interesting and compelling read.
Characters sometimes a bit too perfect, but overall a light and enjoyable read.
Enjoyed the characters. Enjoyable whodunnit
Enjoyable addition to the Maisie Dobbs story.
Loved it. Will want to read more by this author.
All of her books are intriguing as Maisie is an unusual female for her time. She’s had an expansive education and remarkable life and career. Tragic and remarkable.
Love all this author ‘s books
This was my intro to Maisie Dobbs and it will not be my last!
Enjoyed its quaintness and language! A politer time in history….. will probably read more if her adventures
I feel like I am reading an Agatha Christi book which to me is a high compliment. Characters are developed very well. Really want Maisie Dobbs to succeed in her endeavors.
i did not buy into the great love of her life, so am not drawn to the great mourning. Also I prefer small mysteries to world events. If you don’t find these stumbling blocks, you will probably enjoy this more than I. Well written as always, and hope at the end for a return to theold fim.
I love this author and this book didn’t disappoint.
Enjoy the Maisie Dobbs series!
Just okay
