Working with the British Secret Service on an undercover mission, Maisie Dobbs is sent to Hitler’s Germany in this thrilling tale of danger and intrigue—the twelfth novel in Jacqueline Winspear’s New York Times bestselling “series that seems to get better with each entry” (Wall Street Journal). It’s early 1938, and Maisie Dobbs is back in England. On a fine yet chilly morning, as she walks towards … morning, as she walks towards Fitzroy Square—a place of many memories—she is intercepted by Brian Huntley and Robert MacFarlane of the Secret Service. The German government has agreed to release a British subject from prison, but only if he is handed over to a family member. Because the man’s wife is bedridden and his daughter has been killed in an accident, the Secret Service wants Maisie—who bears a striking resemblance to the daughter—to retrieve the man from Dachau, on the outskirts of Munich.
The British government is not alone in its interest in Maisie’s travel plans. Her nemesis—the man she holds responsible for her husband’s death—has learned of her journey, and is also desperate for her help.
Traveling into the heart of Nazi Germany, Maisie encounters unexpected dangers—and finds herself questioning whether it’s time to return to the work she loved. But the Secret Service may have other ideas. . . .

I love a Maisie Dobbs. This was yet another great book in the series!
loved the tie in to pre-war Europe…
Maisie’s intelligence and character always shine through but it’s always heartbreaking to read about this era and the rise in fascism and the horrors to follow.
This is just one in a series of novels starring Maisie Dobbs. While it can stand alone, the reader would understand the characters and history better by starting with book 1. Having said that, “Journey to Munich” is a thrilling page turner. Following Maisie as she must go to Germany on the eve of WWII while having to relive her traumatic past horrors from the Great War, she plays a cat and mouse game with the Nazis – not knowing if her mission will be successful or if she will survive.
Great read.
Typical Marie Dobbs
I love the Maisie Dobbs series. This installment is set in the years during which Hitler came to power in Germany, and the sense of foreboding throughout the book is palpable, but not overwhelming. Maisie is gifted, courageous and loyal, and can be counted on to complete her assignment. A unique blend of mystery and history, I recommend this series!
Another good entry in the series for Winspear. Maisie is a spy for the British secret service.
J. Winspear has written several books with the character Masie Dobbs a rags to riches
Can’t get enough of Maisie Dobbs. Jacqueline Winspear has created a wonderful cast of characters in this series.
I really liked the slightly-imperfect but very promising Maisie Dobbs (first in the series), and by the time I came to Journey to Munich I was totally addicted. You will be too. As with most really good series, where character and place development are crucial, it does work to read them in sequence.
I have read all of jacqueline Winspear’s books and have enjoyed them all. This one, though was fantastic
Loved this book. I think I found a new author.
Yeah for Maisie
Journey to Munich: A Maisie Dobbs Novel Reading this book was taking a big step out of the box of my normal genres and Journey to Munich made it most worthwhile. Maisie is truly fantastic. We are first introduced to Maisie when she decided to take on the assignment to bring an Industrialist, Mr. Donat, back to London from Munich. Maisie knew for this to be a successful assignment, it required
Transformation or immersion into an entirely different persona to rescue another. Given the plot setup she would be self sacrificing and that’s when I got hooked. At one point Maise comment’s to herself about when she “became” Edwina Donat that spirits joined to become one. From then on as I read, it was from the perspective of Edwina Donat. How she had to deal with the German Headquarters to get her “PaPa” released. Then the dilemma that the Germans had lost Mr. DONAT. It was surprisingly at that moment when something shifted in Fraulein Donat’s being driveness. It was Maise. Edwina had to do what Maise the seasoned spy does, track down leads ’till she finds Mr. Donat. She arranged transportation out of the country with someone under normal circumtances would not be in the same social circles. The next day Edwina watched Mr Donat head to freedom. That night in the hotel room is the last we see of Edwina Donat. The wig came off and Maise looked in the mirror for some time an said, “Nice to see you again, Maisie.” WOW. And, when I saw The Epilogue it was truly knowing that I would no longer be reading about my new friends. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK. IT’S A GREAT BOOK.
What a journey this book takes you on. This book takes you back to WW2 a bit and Nazi time. What will happen to Maisie Dobbs? The story gets even better as you read.
Why is everything a secret? They need to get a British man home from Munch. Will that happen? Maisie got to go to Germany as a family member of the man who being held by Hitler.
Maisie needs to be careful and Also protected. Will she return back home safe or will she be caught?
Jacqueline Winspear has become one of my favorite authors with the first book that I got to review. I will be looking for more of her books. I love to finish off the rest of the books in this series. She captured my attention the min you start reading. It takes a bit before getting to the story of a book. She gives a little background about Maisie Dobbs from the earlier book and continues on in this book.
Again, a great series. We’ve seen the main character move from Victorian housemaid to wife of a titled aristrocrat, all while running her own detective agency, beginning soon after the end of WWI. Great period piece, and it is impossible not to care about Maisie.
Another book you don’t want to put down.
I could not put this book down. Maisie is a great character. Very well written.
Ms. Winspear is one of my favorite authors! Excellent book!!
Great series loved everyone of them.
