A psychic without an anchor. A student in trouble. A shooter on the loose.I’m Jonathan Bane, a licensed psychic who consults for the police. I routinely help the police put the bad guys away and, for that reason, the criminal world doesn’t like me much. People like to take a swing at me, or go stabbity, or try for a gun. It makes for interesting times. My psychic ability prevents me from handling … from handling anything electronic—and I do mean ANYTHING, I fry it in seconds—so calling for help isn’t always a possibility.
I need an anchor, a partner, but I’m resigned: it’s just wishful thinking.
At least, I thought so until he walked through the door.
Donovan Havili looks like a thug and has the soul of a superhero. He shines so bright in my vision it’s like watching a supernova. He definitely has the right mindset and skills for this crazy job. But asking anyone to take me on long-term is a bit much. And now we’ve got multiple cases to handle, a Chinese exchange student falsely accused who needs our help, and someone taking random shots at me. It’s a bit much for any new guy to handle and I’m half-afraid that my new partner will run for the door.
But in Donovan Havili, the criminal world has met its match. And maybe, just maybe, I have as well.

Just loved all the fun that is this book, world, and characters. Definitely grab it for a exciting, hilarious escape!
The name and the blurb drew me in! This book is hilarious. Psychics, mystery and action? Count me in!!
Loved Jon and Donovan! I loved Jon’s abilities. Donovan- scary looking but a total teddy bear. Those guys are the best!
First in the series, so there are a lot of things left unresolved. Looking forward to more!
Jonathan Bane is my favorite psychic. He’s hilarious, smart, and incredibly cute. Donovan is his extremely protective partner. This book hits everyone of my buttons: protective partners, sassy and smart characters, exciting plot, drama, action, and sexy moments. The author also put a lot of work into the worldbuilding for this story. It was extremely well done and very believable.
Overall Rating: 5 Stars. The writing was extremely well done and the plot was strong and fascinating. Jon and Donovan were so well developed and crafted. This story gets all the kudos and stars, it’s so good.
3.5
I needed something light and fluffy after my latest angst-y reads. This series has been on my TBR for ages and I can’t say I’m disappointed, though I was expecting something slightly different, something more snarky and banter-y, and less sweet and wholesome.
I loved Jon so much. He was sweet and lovely and also very good at communicating: since he can read auras and emotions, it’s very difficult for him to jump to conclusions or to be lead astray or even misunderstand. I found that so refreshing; he’s also insecure and damaged and I loved that he was also unapologetic about the fact that he desperately needed somebody to help him and shelter him. I don’t think I have ever read books where there isn’t a balance in terms of the two characters needing each other, so I loved that Donovan was the overprotective, overbearing one and that Jon just needed smothering and protection and help in his daily life.
I liked Don too, with his gentle giant act and his protective-“I’ll murder you if you touch him” side.
I wasn’t overkeen on the insta-love though. I am one hundred percent okay with insta-lust, but falling in love at first sight just leaves me feeling a bit cringy. I’ll get over it eventually though. I also wasn’t overly fond of the writing style, but again, I’ll get used to it too and I’m sure I’ll enjoy the next books much more.
The side characters were wonderful and I’m so looking forward to see what will happen with Jon.
Just awesome…a very original story with a great mix of emotion and funny inner monologues and investigation work. I’ve read it at least 4 times and recently also listend to the audio book. (and the next book in the series is even better :-))
*WARNING* intended for mature audiences
Wow, I really enjoyed this! The characters are interesting and likeable (mostly). These to men run into homophobic people, which makes it more realistic. The mystery is intricate and even when it’s solved, it’s not the typical “the Butler did it”. The paranormal element is unique. I just don’t have anything bad to say. I will be downloading book two shortly.
„You listen to me. If you see another serial killer or whatever while you´re out, and I´m not with you, do not follow him. You call me, I will drop everything and come running.“
„Jon´s Downright Ridiculous Shooting Case“ is book one in AJ Sherwood´s „Jon´s Mysteries Series“
Come and meet Jonathan „Jon“ Bane and Donovan „Don“ Havili solving some special mystery crimes.
Jon is a strong psychic with the very special ability to recognize among other things people´s auras and emotions, their energy flows, in short, he can spot the bad guys at first sight.
With his remarkable abilities he has an irreplaceable job as criminal consultant with the police of Nashville. He is successfully helping putting the bad guys away what has certainly for consequence that the criminals don´t like him much. Which is an understatement. He gets attacked, even gets shot at. He urgently needs a partner, but more importantly, as such strong psychic he needs an anchor. But of all his partners who came so far, they left him even faster. So Jon hardly believes in finding a suitable partner anymore.
Then, one day there´s this new guy sitting in the office of Jon´s boss, having an job interview.
Thats the day, when everything changes. Jon meets Donovan Havili.
Donovan Havili, the former military policeman, with his intimidating appearance scares everyone away on first sight. But Jon recognizes what is hidden under the surface. Literally, a heart of gold. Jon convinces his boss to hire Donovan, who becomes his new partner. And more than that.
„In my entire life, I´d never felt as safe as I did in that moment, which was ridiculous. I´d barely known this man six hours.“
I enjoyed this story so much, Jon and Donovan are such amazing characters, that you can´t help but love them. They are both just so adorable and sweet together, a perfect match in all their imperfections.
Can´t wait to read more about them, their story continues in book 2 „Jon´s Crazy Head-Boppin´-Mystery“.
That´s where you can find me now!!
I have mixed feelings about this book. The story and the characters were awesome but the writing and storytelling was a bit boring and simply flat.
This story about a psychic and his new partner/boyfriend/anchor was unique and funny. The mystery inside was well built and had some twists that made it exciting.
What I didn’t like was the storytelling. It was too simple not diving into details of the mystery, adding plotlines that were wholly unnecessary and not saying enough on the relationship and its development. Up until the very end I debated not finishing but the myster pulled me through and I am glad I read it. Though I don’t think I will pick up the next book.
I learned about this book in FB and I decided to give it a try because the title and the fact that the book was about psychics. I loved it!!! I read a lot of books in paranormal romance and about psychics because the topic is never old, but this twist in psychics-working-solving-crimes in close collaboration with policemen is worth read it. And the cherry on top? The relationship between Jon and Donovan. In my opinion one of the best, sweetest and more respectful relationship ever. You are going to love them too!! I can’t wait for the second one in the series!!
I love this book! I was hooked from the beginning and couldn’t put it down. Highly recommended.
I read a recommendation about this author a couple of days ago and decided to give this story a try. So glad I did so, Within 10 minutes I was completely hooked. It’s an hilarious, action packed mystery with an original approach, great world building, and amazing characters.
3.5 appalled, predictable, and weirdly entertained stars
In a word, silly. More enjoyably silly than absurd, Jon and Donovan’s navigation of crazy, paperwork, and relationships amused me more often than not and drew me in to their dynamic. I found a lot of the story really interesting despite the predictability of the villain and their situation as well as the inappropriate cultural stereotypes. The idea of an anchor and the sweetness of Donovan to match the snarky Jon really drew me in and kept me invested in the story. I found myself snickering out loud and also trying to make guesses as to the premise for their continued investigative shenanigans.
So the frustrations first. Cultural stereotypes for the win…or more like for the eyes rolling so far back they got stuck. This dropped the rating by a full star. There were so many descriptions that made me cringe hard. I’m not sure why they were included at all. Not only did they not enhance the telling of the story, they made a mockery of diversity rather than enrich the community in the story. The villain was pretty obvious from the outset and there were many glaring clues that Jon glossed right over. It was difficult to see him get a weird feeling or know what was going on but then let the moment slip by without intelligent connections being made or taking action.
I quite enjoyed the budding relationship. The “brightness” of Donovan and his family was an interesting moment and I found myself wanting to know all of them. I’d like to see Jon get more involved with them to find a softening and a foundation on which to base his and Donovan’s relationship. There’s a lot of dysfunction in his own and he could use the honest goodness of his anchor’s family. Jon’s reliance on Donovan painted a picture of all that Jon was missing up to this point and I really, really liked them together.
As for the criminal/case aspect, it was definitely predictable from the outset. What intrigued me most though, was the small building blocks for additional cases that will likely come up in the future. Rather than setting up a story for a crime to solve and only one crime, it felt a bit more genuine that there were pieces of multiple cases building in the background along with the progression of the featured crime. That small element is quite important for a good continuation of the series and I’m interested to see where we go next.
This was the sweetest urban fantasy I’ve ever read. I liked the world the author started to build. The psychics work alongside police detectives to bring criminals to justice by using their gifts to find the truth. It makes them invaluable and the detective’s work easier. This is low angst, medium heat romance told from Jon’s POV only. (although epilogue afforded a glimpse into Donovan’s mind, so that was a treat).
I liked Jonathan Bane. He has the ability to see emotions that manifest in colors in every person but his life is challenging because he destroys anything electronic around him and sees too much without wanting to. Many would think him a menace. He gave up on personal happiness since one time he tried, it didn’t work out well. But he will settle for a solid work partner. What he gets is the best of both worlds. I liked Jon’s vibrancy, his zest for life despite the difficulties he encounters every day. He is a genuine person who cares about people around him. I loved his family, his niece Skylar was a riot!
Donovan Havili has been judged for his appearance all his life. His size intimidates not only his possible coworkers but makes any personal encounters almost impossible. Jon sees Donovan’s kindness, patience and generosity as soon as he sets his eyes on him. For the first time Donovan feels accepted and respected. His patience and protectiveness makes him perfect partner for Jon. But Jon being his amazing self, and Donovan can’t help but fall for Jon fast hook, line and sinker.
These two were so cute together. Jon’s need to be protected and cherished was fully met by Donovan’s need to be the protector and provider of everything Jon might possibly need. It felt like they were made for each other. Despite them declaring their feelings in the end, the relationship was still new and the feelings will deepen later in the series, it seems. I was fond of these two men by the time the book was over.
The work Jon and Donovan were doing was a uncommon. They were constantly on the go, and their help was invaluable. The case they investigated this time was a bit of a conundrum. Truth that was and wasn’t, actions that contradicted the facts, shooting that didn’t make sense and the victim who is is not what they seem. I liked the case. As with all the psychics, the investigation was unconventional just as the result was. This was a well-written PNR romance, and I am curious to know what happens next. I recommend it!
Really enjoyed this one, though the romance part did get a bit sappy/cheesy. That said..it was very interesting, I love psychics !!
Such an original story. I was pulled in by these warm-hearted characters. A HFN ending with so much more still to be told.
4.5 rounded up
I really enjoyed this book. It has a unique plotline that kept me thoroughly engaged. The characters are well developed for this first installment, but I look forward to getting to know more about each of them as the series continues.
Jon is a great character. He’s a psychic in a world where psychics are well respected and their findings are admissible in the court system. His talents are strong and quite unique. But, they also make daily life a bit of a hardship. He’s not had a good track record with depending on people in the past, so he’s reluctant to let his barriers down at first.
Donovan is former military, an MP, in fact. His physical appearance causes most people to shy away, or actually cringe in fear. But, when he’s brought into the office for an interview, Jon sees his true colors and tells his boss to hire him on the spot. His boss agrees, and though Jon doesn’t think it will work out, Donovan becomes his new partner.
The way Jon works with the police is interesting, and it does put him in danger quite often. But, with Donovan’s protective nature, he now feels more safe doing his job. The cases they work are entertaining, and make a great detective type of story. There is action, a bit of suspense, but the sleuth angle is what I really enjoyed.
The romance is sweet, and once the match is struck, it burns pretty quickly and hot. This leads to unforeseen circumstances that are a little premature for the relationship, but they both deal with the consequences well.
Overall, I enjoyed this story and look forward to seeing more of this series soon.
Happy reading!
