Ex-cop Kurt MacKinnon resents leaving his training stable to dive back into undercover work. He’s seen enough sordidness to last a lifetime. But when his former partner is murdered, Kurt ships his Thoroughbreds to the backwater track where his partner was last seen alive. He intends to make someone pay, even if the killer turns out to be a talented rider with a smoking hot body and a disarming … smile.
Julie West is chasing a big win, struggling to boost her reputation and propel her into the elite jockey ranks. There’s no time for love, but she’d have to be blind and maybe dead not to notice the magnetic new trainer in town. With her talent for handling problem horses, she agrees to work for MacKinnon, never suspecting she’s already a person of interest — and it’s not because of her riding skills.
Kurt never expected his contrary colt to flourish under Julie’s feminine touch nor for his own cynical heart to soften. But when his investigation tightens around the truth, his deceit thrusts them squarely into the killing field.

Good book, I enjoy books relating to animals of any kind as long as they end well. Also I like the author
Ms. Pettersen is one of my favorite authors especially if you like horses. She makes you smell the dust on the track as the horses round the turn. This book has murder, mystery, and tons of sizzle between the main characters. She kept me turning the pages and shed a happy tear at the end.
Not at all what I expected and that was refreshing and why I enjoyed it!
This was one you didn’t want to put down. What really does go on behind the scenes at a race track???
Hated to see this one end. Loved the book!
This story was fantastic. The background surrounding the horse racing was wonderfully accurate and really gripped your attention. there was a fabulous mystery intertwined within a dreamy love story. A really fun read!
It was a change of pace, a little mystery and romance.
I’m not sure how I found this book but I might have seen it in passing and clicked on it because of the title. The author knows her subject. Once I read her bio-that she had competed on the Alberta race circuit- I knew she’d get that right so I was intrigued to read it. Plus the hero is a Royal Canadian Mounted Policeman, which also interested me …
An entertaining story with good character development. Nice to see one that isn’t a former seal. Interesting story line.
If you have any interest in horse racing, this makes a good read, and it doesn’t hurt to have a little romantic story line going! I enjoyed this book so much that I got the next 2, and a few more of different sets by the same author. Easy reading and thoroughly enjoyable!
very well written and knowledgeable about race horseing. Good mystery to the end trying to figure out what the “bad guy” was up to.
Good story.
I enjoyed learning more about life involving the horse racing business. The main characters were interesting and real. An interesting plot with lots of action.
As someone who worked at a racetrack, I thought the depiction of life on the backside was pretty spot on.
I really liked the characters and the mix of action with some romance. I learned more about horses and the racing trade as you did with Dick Francis. This was the first of this author I’d seen and I will definitely read more.
Love the characters
Bev Pettersen is one of my favorite authors. She never disappoints with just the right amount of animals, mystery and romance. Her characters, both two footed and four footed, good and bad are interesting and, I think, well developed
As always, one of the best Author’s out there. Every book I have read of her’s is exciting and romantic
Enjoyed reading about the world of horse owning and racing as well as the Romance/suspense.
love horse racing, nice story with a twist
