She’s always played it safe…
College junior Lucy Washington abides by one rule—avoid risk at all costs. She’s cautious in every aspect of her life, from her health, to her mock trial team, to the boring guys she dates. When a brash, gorgeous jock walks into the campus coffeeshop and turns his flirt on, Lucy is stunned by the force of attraction. For the first time ever, she’s willing to step … to step out of her comfort zone, but can she really trust the guy who’s determined to sweep her off her feet?
He’s always played around…
Entering his last year of college eligibility, linebacker Matthew “Matty” Iverson has the team captaincy in his sights. And it’s his for the taking, if he can convince his quarterback Ace Anderson to give up the starting position. Luckily, Matty already has an edge—the hottie he’s lusting over just happens to be Ace’s childhood best friend. Getting Lucy on his side and in his bed? Hell yeah. Matty is more than confident he can have both, but when he falls hard for Lucy, it’s time for a new game plan: convince the woman of his dreams that she’s not sleeping with the enemy.

I enjoyed this story. Matt was great, he was a party boy, football player and an all around “player” but he sets his sights on Lucy and something changes in him. He doesn’t know how to just be friends with a girl, but they do develop a friendship. Lucy got a little annoying, she was afraid of everything, she made a promise to her friend Ace that she would not date athletes or his friends for that matter. But Ace seemed like he could do what ever he wanted and kind of forces Lucy to abide by his promise. Don’t know why Lucy could not be her own person, she started out strong and independent but it seemed like she was just naïve and scare of the everything. I know I already said that but come on, she questioned everything. I get that there are consequences to every action but she took it a little to far at times. Even though I just said all that, I still think this is a good-humored story of friendship and love. Ms. Fredrick knows how to pull you into a story and makes you yearn for more.
Matty is just coming off the high of winning the national championship but wanted a break from the bars and jersey chasers so he wanders into a coffee shop that in his 3 years at school never once wandered into. While there he meets Lucy and is instantly drawn to her. He is shocked that she doesn’t recognize him but that also excites him a little. Lucy is a planner and a risk assessor. She is on the mock trial team and wants to go to law school but her anxiety is getting in the way of that dream. Her best friend since 3rd grade is Ace, the quarter back for the football team, and they have a hard fast rule, she doesn’t date anyone on the team and he won’t go near her friends. So when Lucy realizes who Matty is she has to friendzone him. But Matty can’t keep away from Lucy and thank goodness because Matty is the best risk she has ever taken.
So the bad – this one was slow and took a bit for me to get into it. I think it was a me not you scenario. The blurb was misleading as all get out – felt like the blurb had nothing to do with the story or at least the whole Ace portion of it. Irked me but at the same time I liked the actual story line better so I don’t let that bother me too much.
The good – I adored Matty and Lucy, they were such polar opposites that were so perfect together. I loved how he pushed her boundaries/limits; how he forced her (in a good way) to step out of her comfort zone. And at the same time she did the same for him. She helped him to open his eyes and see things in a different light. They were fun, flirty and sexy. Their I respected the heck out their stances that they both took when it came to Ace’s position on the team. But mostly these two were perfect together. I adored them and the journey they went on.
*4 Stars*
I enjoyed this book and I really liked the characters, apart from Ace by the end. Our main characters, Matty and Lucy were awesome, and I like delving into their personalities and discovering their depths.
This was a fun and flirty book, and for the most part it was really enjoyable. I enjoyed the chemistry between the two main characters, and I enjoyed their interactions with their close friends as well. I’d really like to read a book about Hammer.
An enjoyable read, and I look forward to continuing this series.

Jockblocked is the second book in the Gridiron series by Jen Frederick.
Confident, cocky and gorgeous, Matthew Iverson has the college world at his fingertips. He’s the consummate player on and off the field; yet everyone loves him. He’s a great defensive player, potential candidate for the NFL, and a possible captain for his last year in college. He meets the one person he has to work for, Lucy Washington. She’s a beautiful poly sci major, crazy busy with mock trials, and is immune to football players. She is best friends with the quarterback and has a pact to never date one of his teammates.
Frederick takes us through the development of the budding friendship, the fall, and the trials and tribulations that come with it.
I loved the characters of Matty and Lucy. They were both humorous, sassy, sexy, intelligent and complex. Frederick was also successful with developing a strong supporting cast adding to the appeal and the overall complexity of the storyline.
Frederick’s use of humor was abundant through bantering and snarkiness, adding to the appeal further.
Frederick dove into the mechanics of the football team behind the scenes as well as the minute details of preparing for a mock trial tournament. Both aspects brought greater depth and dimension to the story line.
All in all, I was thoroughly entertained and intrigued from beginning to end. I’d really like to see stories for Ace, Hammer, Jack, Stella, Sutton, Charity and Heather whether in this series or a spin off. There’s even intrigue surrounding Hammer’s sisters. I can’t wait to see what’s next on Frederick’s horizon
