I found the author’s writing style very easy to read and I got caught up in the story immediately. I love the vibe between Jack and Gareth. Their mutual attraction is obvious, plus I like how they get each other, and the trust between them on a subconscious level. I like how the title of the book works on two levels, and also the UK setting and feel of the narrative.
The plot is detailed and clever, and kept me turning pages, with a few shocking surprises along the way. The characters drew me in, and worked alongside the plot to keep me reading.
Jack has had a hell of a life, and he’s a very layered complex character. His quirks subtly show how he’s been damaged, especially with his tendency towards being a workaholic who runs on coffee fumes. I liked how he’s direct with the boys and straight up with them too. He’s been there, and so can connect with them on their level.
I love Gareth. He’s strong, capable, and caring. Exactly who Jack needs and vice versa.
I like how Gareth and Jack have to learn each other’s boundaries, and discover who they are now as well as who they were. The supporting cast feel very real, and I like that there are a number of strong women amongst them.
I’ve heard a lot of good things about this series, and they’re all true. I’m hooked.
This is an interesting, intriguing, and complex story with more than one plotline running through it. I enjoyed it, but I wanted more background on the characters. A lot of people are introduced, some suddenly and without much information (Skylar for instance). This is true even of the main love interests, Jack and Gareth. Hopefully, more will be revealed as the series continues. The story has corporate intrigue, human trafficking and abuse, espionage, and even a hint of political intrigue. There are a lot of threads to develop and the author does a great job of grabbing the reader’s interest in all of them. Jack Horwood, the primary *hero* is a complex person with a dark history that is only hinted at.
I loved him, and I want to know more. I just finished Job Hunt and I am so eager for the next book, which I already have in my possession. I think this will shape up to be a great series, and I recommend it. I have one WARNING though: This is sometimes a gritty, violent, and bloody story. So, if you are sensitive or have experienced PTSD, sexual, or other trauma, you may want to skip it.
I receive an ARC from the author and am voluntarily leaving this honest review.
Jack is one of those characters that stay with you long after the last page is read. Seeing this beautifully complex and compelling character grown up and having come into his own was awe inspiring and watching him work…I was up well into the wee hours because I just couldn’t stop reading. As soon as I finished I was ready for more Jack and Gareth, I can’t wait to see how their relationship develops and absolutely cannot wait to see more of Jack doing what he does best.
