HIS FANTASY BECOMES THEIR REALITY!High school can be a difficult time for a teenager, especially toward the end where one has to start making the sudden transition into adulthood. For Jimmy Hawthorn it is even worse. Not only does he need to successfully make that transition, he has to do it while hiding the fact that he is the one responsible for kidnapping two fellow high school students, both … responsible for kidnapping two fellow high school students, both of whom are hanging from their wrists in a secret underground fallout shelter he discovered behind an abandoned house on the outskirts of town.

William is a really amazing writer, and if you read many of his books, you can see how he has really grown with each one. He really has a way of making you feel as if you are in the book, experiencing what is happening. Now, this is a wonderful thing, however, I must be blunt- his books are not for the weak-stomached (is that a word? ha). But seriously, I can handle A LOT, and this had me cringing. I truly think it’s because of William’s ability to really immerse you in the book.
What is it about- well Jimmy is a highschool student that is REALLY into bondage, and he decides that in order to get what he wants, he has to kidnap a girl. As you can imagine, her stay is not pleasant. Jimmy continues both his “regular” life and his new secret life, which of course blows up in his face. The ending will not leave you smiling, let’s just put it that way.
Is this book for you? You will have to decide for yourself. I personally will continue on reading his books.
The concept of this book is twisted. Rarely do we get to root against the main character but here it was a perfect opportunity to see inside of “the bad guys thought process and root for him to get caught along the way. Before reading Jimmy I had read the reviews and was a bit hesitant to read it as all the reviews had said it was a hard read due to the crimes that are committed. However I feel the author did it as tasteful as possible leaving out the needless details of the actual acts and letting your imagination fill in the blanks. Great read.
Sick, twisted, demented and horrifying! I am not, by nature, a violent person, but I found myself wanting to come through the pages and kill Jimmy Hawthorne, myself. But, only after hanging him from his wrists, beating him with his own belt then ripping off his package and shoving it down his throat!
Malmborg does an exceptional job of making you hate Jimmy. So much so, that you find yourself imagining all kinds of depraved types of torture you’d like to use on him in retaliation for the ways in which he physically and emotionally abuses and psychologically manipulates the girls that he kidnaps.
This book grabs you and drags you down the long, disturbing corridor of Jimmy’s ever-evolving psychosis, before gleefully and unapologetically plunging you, tandem, into a spiraling decent of madness.
It was ok, more of a light read not a grab you and not let go till you are done book.
I knew from the other reviews and description it was going to be disturbing, and I’m ok with that. It just seemed to contrived and forced. It was predictable and just came across as “paint by numbers”.
At least it was free.
Hard Pass.
I love creep! And this author known how to invent a creepy character.
A human monster walking the high school hallways nobody knowing. Pretty scary story. A very good read.
Great bones…the author has a solid handle on storytelling. Characters a tad flat, but not too bad. Not enough build up to be gripping. I’d happily buy again from this author, there’s some real talent to develop.
A++ Best book I’ve read in a long time!!
Disturbing.
It was a thought provoking read in that you never know what’s going in a persons head! Jimmy came across as a Norma kid, other than being a bit reclusive. Even his girlfriend had no clue. It’s not so much that the book was an erudite read, as much as reminding you that you really never know a person….
Frustrated by the ending…..
Didn’t like
Save your time. I read this because of a hesitant recommendation. Yikes. This is a fetishistic fever dream. Malmbourg drives the plot well enough, but the characters are one-dimensional stereotypes, except for Jimmy who has duality but outside of any context – there is no explanation for anything he does. He just acts. One gets more depth and understanding of this type of homicidal sadism from one-hour of “Criminal Minds.”
This clearly owes a lot to the popularity of Fifty Shades. A lot of time was spent recounting the protagonist’s fascination with bondage and a great many plot holes were left in the story.
How can a child become so twisted. Scary!!
At times was a bit graphic, but scary!
Totally unexpected but kept me entranced all the way to the end
This book was extremely disturbing and has caused me many lost nights of sleep… and I enjoy dark stories. This one was too much. There were only two redeeming characters, who were tragically impacted by Jimmy’s actions. I felt no compassion for Jimmy, and his girlfriend, though obviously nowhere near as bad as Jimmy, was not a pleasant character either. Reader beware if torture and rape are triggers for you.
Whom ever wrote this, has a very twisted mind. The thought of something like this happening, would take a sick SOB.
