The author never ceases to amaze me with her writing ability. Once again she has written a story that not only draws me closer to God, but uses biblical stories to capture the essence of His love. It was so refreshing to witness Jewel talk about Noah and others from the bible to Boaz. I loved Jewel and her determination to go to Alaska. She is very much grounded in faith and it plays a big part in her decisions. The trip by sea was extremely exciting to read and I could feel the sway of the steamship as it skimmed the ocean. I was so intrigued by the gold Jewel hoped to find and how her journey was not without a bit of mystery.
When Boaz was introduced I started to think of him as a snake. His mother and him have set their eyes on Jewel and scheme to win her trust. He is so confidant of himself that he actually believes he will capture Jewel’s heart and with it her wealth. Boaz better watch out. Jewel is a very smart and level headed young woman who is not about to hand over her fortune or is she?
There is a part in the story when Boaz finds out something about his mother that makes him look at her differently. It is a great example of trying to survive when you are alone raising a child. I loved how the author allowed Boaz to examine his heart and try to understand that his mother felt she had no choice in how to provide for her and Boaz. There is a lot of secrets that come out that make this story full of twists and unexpected outcomes. Boaz has a family history of underhanded deals and many he himself has participated in. Will he be able to follow through with this scheme?
The author has given us a look into the bible while telling a story of redemption, forgiveness and renewed faith. Boaz has many challenges along the way and I loved how he spent time reading the bible. I loved the exciting adventure while Jewel and her crew looked for gold. Alaska has always been a place I would love to visit and it intrigued me even more as I read about the beauty of a place that is rich in history. I have come to really feel close with Jewel and Boaz as they face danger, share a love for the bible and remind us that God is a forgiving God. No sin is too great for God not to forgive. Sometimes we believe that our sins are unforgiveable. This story will help readers understand that God loves us and is there with open arms to embrace us.
I received a digital copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.
Jewel’s Gold is the perfect title for this adventure. She is strong, sure of herself, self-reliant and just a very nice young lady. He wants to take her for everything he can get but the only way to get close to her is to go along to Alaska and help her mine for gold. I enjoyed the trip as we took a ship and then hiked into the Alaskan frontier. Suspense, secrets, con-men, a little romance and a lot of faith brought us to a special ending.
I was gifted a copy, no review was required. My review is voluntary.
My Thoughts on Jewel’s Gold:
I loved this book! But then again, I’ve loved every book I’ve read by Caryl McAdoo. Her works are fun and fast-paced. They keep you hooked and draw you in. Her characters snag you and become your best friends. You just can’t stop reading!
The biblical references by giving characters Bible names and possibly characteristics of those people of the names is fun. I have to admit I was a bit shocked by the blow of who Jewel was at the end too. Interesting to have her family tree re-written a bit.
Jewel is definitely a fun and feisty character in her own right. She knows what she wants and she’s not afraid to go-to for the getting of it. Her father was the main love of her life until he died. She loved him to distraction and all she does now is shadowed by what he would do or how he might have gone on. To this bit, she loves Alaska and their gold claim. The time she spent there with him was some of the best memories she has.
The one person in this book who has their head on straight when it comes to money and business is Jewel. She’s quite the businesswoman. Very astute and quite the bridge player as well.
Maybe I should poke in now with the fact that I’ve never played bridge or any other card game besides solitaire in my life. So that was probably the hardest bit of the book to get into and understand. The playing of cards. I have no idea what the references mean. Does not affect the enjoyment of the book.
Boaz is a fun character to watch grow and develop. He too learns all about his family and what went on in the years gone by. Already he knew about the cheating and cons that have gone on. He’s participated in plenty as well. Can he finally get free of that life? Would God have anything to do with a man like him? Also, would Jewel?
Loved the book, highly recommend this one and any book by Caryl McAdoo you can get your hands on. You’ll love her writing style and have books to last you a while.

Author Caryl McAdoo has written a lovely Alaskan Gold Rush tale in Jewel’s Gold. She is a master storyteller extraordinaire, and I always look forward to her books. The author has a way with words that will take readers to times and places never before travelled.
I found this tale so fascinating. The scenery was well defined that I felt like I took the trip with them. This is much more than a romance tale. I learned about The Alaskan Gold Rush. It has adventure, mystery, deceit, romance, and lessons on forgiveness, self discovery, and faith.
The characters are feisty and realistic. Jewel is sassy and pretty. Boaz was hard to like at first but then I warmed up to him. Both of their mothers were a hoot! This book provides some comic relief, too.
I highly recommend this sweet story. As with all books, the author writes she brings glory to God. I read this in one sitting and wanted more! It definitely earned a 5 star rating from me.
A copy was provided by Celebrate Lit but these are my honest words.
This delightful novella takes place in the wilds of Alaska. {mostly} Jewel’s deceased dad always spoke of hitting the Mother Lobe and now she is determined to follow in his footsteps. She purchases a sailing vessel and outfits it with goods to trade and mining equipment, hires a few men other than her father’s faithful crew and sails to Alaska. Boaz Branson is one of the new men and as all he has ever known is conning folks, he plans to somehow steal the gold and flee. His father has hatched up the plan and has taught him well. He didn’t plan on things turning out the way they did. You will enjoy turning the pages as others on this trip turn out to be other than they were first believed to be. There is adventure, suspense, romance and lots of God’s love and forgiveness. Thanks McAdoo for an interesting read.
Caryl McAdoo has combined a romance, mystery, adventure and message of salvation in one story. The book has wonderful characters. The story isn’t preachy but gives the wonderful path of forgiveness and redemption. Jewel and Boaz both have to face a few truths about their family tree. I totally enjoyed this book.
