A wonderful book about the Holy Spirit and how our lives are impacted by Him. This is often the area that is fuzziest in the minds of believers. Exactly how do we relate to such a Spirit. God the Father we can grasp. God the Son we can understand. But God the Spirit? Who is that? And how do we relate to Him?
Anne brings the fuzzy concept of God’s Spirit into crystal clear focus in this non-fiction and scripturally sound presentation. Your eyes will be opened to the third person of the Godhead in ways you’ve never considered. He will move from a mystical vapor into a dear and close friend and companion. Don’t miss this book!
An excellent read for anyone wanting to live a Christian life
okay
I’ve been slowly working my way through this one – actually, savoring and re-reading sections frequently – until I reached the final pages. I hope that you will find a copy of it – either e-book or softcover – and make the time to dive into the wonderfully refreshing and challenging words offered in Jesus in Me by our sister-in-the-Lord Anne Graham Lotz.
The Holy Spirit… It seems like one section of Christianity runs headlong – maybe sometimes a little irreverently – toward Him. Another section of Christianity, made nervous by what they see as blunders by the other section, avoid talking about Him – or talk about Him as an “it”. (I remember hearing Charles Stanley say that, many years ago, in college/seminary, he and a group of friends were discussing the Holy Spirit; Charles referred to Him as an “it”. One of the group – a kind and wise young man – took Charles aside later and said something to the effect of, “You need to better know WHO you’re talking about; He is not an IT.” Charles relates that the explanation/conversation that followed proved incredibly helpful in his understanding and growth as a believer.)
Sometimes just the two words put together for His Name invoke uneasiness… not really the response expected for One who is supposed to be our “Comforter”, our helper, our friend, guide… the One who is “Jesus in me” – and Jesus in you.
Anne Graham Lotz gently yet firmly peels back the layers of uneasiness, using Scripture as the backbone to show the Holy Spirit’s character and role in the lives of those who are His. She illustrates her teaching profusely with pertinent and vivid stories from her own life and the lives of others. (I loved how every story closely tied to the point being made; they weren’t in it just for filler, entertainment, etc.) Having grown up in the evangelical church and being a Christian for most of my life, I have rarely heard sermons that deal specifically with the Holy Spirit, so I was intrigued yet cautious as I opened this book. I spent time thinking about and comparing what Anne Graham Lotz taught with what the Scriptures teach… and came out on the other side of this book very blessed by its contents. It’s one of those books that I will keep on my shelf and re-read, along with My Utmost for His Highest and The Hearing Heart. Sensitive yet unapologetically Biblical, Jesus in Me spends most of its pages dealing with who the Holy Spirit is and what He does in the individual’s life, from His role in conversion to conviction of sin and empowerment in the believer’s life. An excellent appendix section provoked thought and discussion in our house as well regarding the gifts of the Holy Spirit in the church today.
I give Jesus in Me my highest recommendation and recommend it for both men and women who are looking for a deeper walk with Jesus.
* I received a copy of this book from the publisher and was under no obligation to provide a positive review.
This book was uplifting and encouraging for my spiritual Life. Ann Graham Lotz writes with a beautiful style, much like her father, Billy Graham. It is packed full
of truths and challenges you to a deeper relationship with our God. It’s a must read!!!
This year, I decided to read more Christian nonfiction along with all the novels that I love. I couldn’t have chosen a better one to start the year off with than this one. I feel like I’ve had a spiritual growth-spurt. Highly recommended!
After reading this book I now understand why Anne Graham Lotz is considered such a great author and speaker. She has been able to help me understand The Holy Spirit in a way that I never had before. I have been a Christian for many years but I still had questions about this third part of the Trinity. Lotz uses her battle with cancer and her overwhelming assurance that The Holy Spirit is always with her to better explain this amazing presence in our own lives.
Jesus in Me It has twenty-seven chapters that have been divided into seven parts and the first part is devoted to the names given to The Holy Spirit. He is known as our Helper, Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor, Counselor, Strengthener, and Standby and we are shown why He has these names. The other six sections deal with His presence, power and purpose and Lotz truly enlightens with her understanding and knowledge. She reminds us that whether we are a new believer or a mature Christian, we can deepen our relationship with Jesus Christ by better understanding the Holy Spirit. This book is perfect for personal bible study but it would also be a wonderful resource for a group study.
I received an advanced reader copy of this book from Multnomah and a positive review was not a requirement. These are my own thoughts.
Jesus in Me is a powerful book on the Holy Spirit, written by Anne Graham Lotz who is a well-established author in Christianity. This is not just an informational book on the study of the Holy Spirit but it explains the possibility and power of experiencing a personal relationship with the Spirit of God. The author shares from her heart about her personal experience of the Holy Spirit as a constant companion. She begins the book by making sure the reader understands that the Holy Spirit is a living person and not an ‘it’ and that He is not an optional extra in her life but a divine necessity. He is the third person of the Triune Godhead who goes by many different names which the author goes into depth to discuss the personal and practical implications of each. Lotz uses examples from scripture and personal experiences and her intention seems to be to help the reader to recognize the presence and companionship of the Spirit of God. The book is divided into 7 parts. Several of the parts are Loving the Person of the Holy Spirit, Embracing the Purpose of the Holy Spirit, and Reflecting the Purity of the Holy Spirit. Often at the end of the chapters, there is a short section of thoughtful questions and practical suggestions intended to apply the chapter’s content to the reader’s life. There are so many ‘take away’ thoughts to ponder and nuggets of wisdom in the book. A couple of ideas resonated with me. Lotz shared that the Holy Spirit had changed her attitude from that of being a victim to recognizing that she is on a mission as His ambassador. Another idea is that the Holy Spirit works in us to make us holy so that we may reflect the holiness of God. One of the final understandings about the Holy Spirit that Lotz shared is that throughout the scriptures the Holy Spirit’s focus is on Jesus. Through creation, through the centuries of the lives of God’s people and the prophets, through the cradle and the cross and ultimately through the crown, the Holy Spirit makes known that Jesus reigns supreme. Jesus in Me is a wonderful book for believers whether they are new in their faith or have walked with the Lord for many years. It is a great book not only for one’s library but also to give as a gift to friends and family.
I received a complimentary copy of the book from Multnomah Publishing and was not required to write a review. The opinions are my own.
When I saw who the author of this book was I eagerly grabbed it. Although this is the first book of hers that I have read, I had read other articles and information about her. And I couldn’t wait to read more.
I’ve read the Bible accounts and accept His basis in scripture. I’ve also read quite a few books on the biblical foundation but I was also looking for something a bit more than Holy Spirit 101.
I liked the approach that she had when it came to all the different names that describes who Holy Spirit is and some of the ways that He functions. I got nuggets from some of her insights especially when it came to Holy Spirit as our Defender. That was really interesting to me. Equally enlightening was the chapter about His being The Strengthener and her trip to India.
When your spirit is restless or upset have you ever asked The Counselor why? Have you even realized that is what is going on? Where it is coming from? All very good questions.
Her personal life experiences of how she relied on Holy Spirit as well as the scripture verse made for an interesting, and balanced book for me.
I found her to be pretty transparent when it came to being a real person. Someone with failures, weaknesses and vulnerabilities. I ended up really enjoying this book.
“I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.”
PHENOMENAL!
I’ve had the privilege of hearing Anne Graham Lotz preach, worked through some of her Bible Studies and read some of her previous books. This book on how the Holy Spirit is Jesus in Me is written in her trademark style. It’s practical, easy to understand, filled with background information, encouraging and contains illustrations from her own personal life to make her point.
Lotz writes about the names of the Holy Spirit and one that I’ve read but somehow just didn’t dwell on is “STANDBY” which is found in John 16:7 (Amplified Version). Standby is referenced again in Psalm 46:1. Lotz reminds us that the Holy Spirit can always be relied on either for regular use or when an emergency occurs.
I think this quote best describes the role of JESUS IN ME:
“… the only way to prepare for an emergency is to be pre-prayered. A crisis leaves no time to establish a relationship with God, no time to get right with Him, no time to learn how to pray. It leaves. No time. Period. A crisis just erupts without warning! So it’s critically important to establish a personal relationship with God through faith in Jesus Christ . . . now. To make sure that relationship is free of any sin that might cloud it or put distance between God and us . . . now. To establish a prayer life . . . now. Now. Before the crisis erupts. Then when it does, you and I can count on the Holy Spirit to be our Standby. He may not keep us from the emergency, but He will be with us in it and bring us through it.”
I was provided an ARC of this book by WaterbrookMultnomah & NetGalley. The opinions expressed here are completely my own and without influence.
This book has been an eye-opener for me. The author has brought to light the truth about the Holy Spirit and made Him so accessible to all of us. Lotz inspires and convicts and encourages throughout the entire book.
I will admit this is a rollercoaster of a book and there were some chapters that I struggled and trudged thru. Still I would greatly recommend this book as a beacon of truth in our dark world.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Readers Copy of this book.
Best book I have ever read dealing with the Holy Spirit. Easy to read and understand, perfect for everyone. Ms Lotz is a great teacher.
When I first heard about this book I knew it was one I needed to read. So much has happened to Anne Graham Lotz recently. Her husband dies, her father dies and then she is diagnosed with breast cancer. So much for any one person to handle in so short of a time. But she wants us to know that the Holy Spirit was there for her in all her heartache, to comfort and sustain her through it all.
She teaches us to love, enjoy, rely on, trust and listen to His whispers. And most importantly to me, how to be filled and stay filled with the Holy Spirit.
Her father, Rev Billy Graham, has called her the best preacher in the family. I’ve had the privilege to hear her in person. She is a powerful voice for God. I highly recommend this book to anyone that needs a closer walk with the Lord and the encouragement and support of His Spirit in good times and difficult times.
I am thankful that Anne Graham Lotz has recently finished her last chemo after a long year of chemo treatments. God is good!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher but was not required to write a review positive or otherwise. All opinions are my own.
Using both Biblical examples, as well as, examples from her own life, Anne Graham Lotz teaches in a clear and understandable way about having a real relationship with Jesus. She includes thoughtful and practical applications for daily life. I appreciated that Lotz shared openly about her life including the suffering and her own heartbreaks. She certainly hasn’t been exempt or sheltered from life’s difficulties. Yet she has learned to rely on the Holy Spirit to guide, protect and comfort her and I can tell that she wants that for everyone. I am glad that I had a chance to read this wonderful message. I was given a copy of this book by the publisher. All opinions are my own.
In her book, Jesus In Me, author Anne Graham Lotz talks about the person of the Holy Spirit; what His job is and how He helps us. Drawing on her life experiences, Lotz gives examples of how the Holy Spirit has helped her, and how she has learned to tap into this rich resource. Her warm writing style will cause you to feel as if you’re having coffee with a friend who loves to teach about the Holy Spirit.
I liked the way the author broke down each chapter in easy to read topics. And of course the Appendixes should not be optional reading with this book. There is much meat, much instruction on how to be filled with the Holy Spirit, how to hear Him, and other subjects. I highly recommend it!
I received a complimentary copy of this book but was not required to leave a review.
Discover how to better love and rely on the person of the Holy Spirit. Often, we overlook the third person of the trinity- the Holy Spirit. The author breaks down how we can experience the Holy Spirit as a constant companion. To often we reject what we do not understand. When Anne’s husband passed away, she found comfort from the Holy Spirit, as a counselor, helper and intercessor. The book reinforced that the Holy Spirit is with me every day through thick or thin.
Chapter 22 “His Purity Is Beautiful In Us” spoke to me in several ways. One of the responsibilities of the Spirit is to make us holy as He is holy. Our responsibility is to cooperate with Him if we truly want to experience purity. How often does the Holy Spirit talk to us about forgiveness and we sometimes do not listen? When He says we need to forgive, we need to forgive.
Hebrews 4:15 This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testing’s we do, yet he did not sin. I think every Christian needs to read “Jesus In Me.” The book deserves a 10/10.
I received an ARC from the publisher Waterbrook & Multnomah in exchange for an honest opinion.
The Holy Spirit, third member of the Trinity, is probably the least known and understood despite the awesome work He does in us today. This scripture-based book shares who the Holy Spirit is and what His work is in our lives, including and especially pointing us to Jesus. I have been familiar with Anne Graham Lotz since attending one of her Just Give Me Jesus weekends several years ago, and appreciate her sound teaching and manner of speaking, as if there are simply a few friends talking over coffee. Through her encouragement, honesty, and shared scripture, I want to continue learning more about the Holy Spirit, loving Him, and letting Him work in my heart.
The author shares much about the Christian life, including special prayers for personal revival and how one comes to faith in Jesus as Savior. One learns step by step through the seven sections of the book, including Loving the Person of the Holy Spirit, Enjoying the Presence of the Holy Spirit, Relying on the Power of the Holy Spirit, Embracing the Purpose of the Holy Spirit, Living by the Precepts of the Holy Spirit, Reflecting on the Purity of the Holy Spirit, and Trusting in the Providence of the Holy Spirit. I like how each section is laid out; I can’t think of anything that was left out! We learn much about the Trinity throughout both the Old and New Testaments of the Bible.
I had not thought about it before, but Mrs. Lotz emphasizes that the Holy Spirit loves each of us individually and He isn’t “stuck” with us. But we have to allow Him to work in our lives, and the reader sees how the author demonstrates His work and presence through applicable illustrations, scripture, and her own experiences. Anne Graham Lotz has had many rich, as well as challenging, events in her life, from growing up with both parents being strong, faithful believers, to being a young mother, beginning to teach Bible study, and major life changes of recent years.
She shares these experiences without self-pity or anger. Instead, the author shows how the Holy Spirit has been with her through it all. He encourages her, convicts her, protects her, leads her even in the most challenging missionary journeys. She is open and honest about the hardest times of her life and how the Holy Spirit has comforted, helped, counseled, and led her through excruciatingly painful times.
I appreciate the demonstration of how she studies scripture with the help of the Holy Spirit. It is unique, and I want to try her suggestions after struggling with how to study in a manner that I can understand and remember it, difficult in recent years due to health challenges. I also appreciate the difference between being indwelt by the Holy Spirit and being filled with Him, a list of personal sins that can help with personal self-examination and confession, and various spiritual gifts.
This book is excellent for personal study along with a Bible and notebook, and I hope a study guide will be forthcoming in the future. Thanks to the author’s way of writing and teaching, I am definitely encouraged to learn more and allow the Holy Spirit to work in my life. I highly recommend this to anyone who is curious about Christianity, who wants to know more about Jesus and His Holy Spirit, and wants to have so much more of the Holy Spirit working through their lives.
From a thankful heart: I received a copy of this from the publisher and from NetGalley, and this is my honest review.
This book resonated with me on so many levels, I would read a chapter and then the same message would be spoken at church, and then it often followed me on social media.
The author points out with so many examples throughout this read how the Holy Spirt has been there for her, and when you begin thinking about it, I realized that yes, I could come up with my own examples.
The author made each chapter very personal, and they are short, but they stick with you and each gave me a greater understanding of The Holy Spirit.
I think personally I remember meeting Him when I was ten, and making my Confirmation, at that time we called him “The Holy Ghost”, but he has been real to me ever since.
A book that you won’t be disappointed in, and I know it enriched me!
I received this book through the Publisher Waterbrook Multnomah, and was not required to give a positive review.
Acceptance onto the launch team for Jesus in Me was a bit of a pinch-me moment, to be perfectly honest. I mean, Anne Graham Lotz — talk about a top-of-the-list name! Everyone knows who she is, or at least who her dad was.
Jesus in Me focuses on the third person of the Trinity – the Holy Spirit. Chock full of Scripture, the book makes me realize why Billy Graham called his daughter “the best preacher in the family.” Wow.
Lotz writes so approachably — she makes a mysterious topic both more mysterious and less so. Perhaps a better way to put it: she helps the reader test the waters of something and Someone we can always know more! We can’t ever hit a limit of knowing all there is to know about God.
Chapters are short, direct, and to the point, allowing the reader to engage even when short on time. Lotz uses real-life examples, both from her own and others’ experiences, to illustrate biblical truths; she also is quick to include the hard stories — ones that don’t have happy endings or even resolutions, period. She freely acknowledges our own limitations as humans. (This encourages me greatly; if Billy Graham’s daughter can say that, I don’t feel so bad … LOL! It’s not just me!?!) Many chapters end with a reflection, which could be used as a journaling prompt or opportunity to dive further into the Word or prayer.
Jesus in Me is definitely a book I’ll revisit over the years. It will surely get better with multiple rereads (hey, kind of like the Bible). I so appreciate this insightful and timely read.
I received a copy of the book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.
Jesus in Me: Experiencing the Holy Spirit as a Constant Companion by Anne Graham Lotz is an insightful, inspirational and educational Book. A Christian Pneumatology. Ms. Lotz uses her personal experiences and her biblical knowledge to help the reader understand the….Holy Spirit, is real, not mystical, magic, he prays with us, he guides us, and comforts us, he is with us all the time.
A must read for readers who are searching for the meaning of the Holy Spirit, he is a devine necessity.
I found myself intrigued and enjoyed to be able to read JESUS IN ME. It is truly a spiritual and empowering book that I feel we all could use in our lives to have a closer walk with our Savior. I so enjoyed and look forward to using the knowledge I find with my walk with my Savior. Thank you, Ms. Lotz!!
