Defeated. That’s how Evan Keeler feels. His last tour overseas ended with personal injuries and the loss of his best friend, Fynn Parker. Evan has become broody and gets lost in the darkness of his thoughts more often. Which is no surprise, when he doesn’t see an end to his therapy appointments and can’t seem to get out of his parents’ basement. At her wit’s end, his mother decides it’s enough. … enough. Little by little, Mrs. Keeler convinces Evan to try and get better. To get back to living.
The catch is, because he’s suffering from memory loss, Evan can’t put all the pieces back together. He doesn’t think his history with Jane was all that perfect, so it would help if he could remember where they left things off before this last tour.
Although confused by his feelings and reality, Evan does know one thing—he can’t let Jane Parker go.

This is my first book by this author and it wont be my last. This is the sixth book in this new series I have read and I can’t wait to read more.
Master Sergeant Evan Keeler has come home from war with battles scares that run deep. Keeler’s life was turned upside down when the Humvee he was in exploded and his best friend, Flynn Parker, died. He doesn’t remember everything that happen before he was last deployed or while he was deployed but he does remember the bombing. Now he has lost his will to keep going and blames himself for not being prepared for the attack.
Jane aka January is Flynn’s twin sister. Jane was going through her own issues with the loss of her brother and I liked how the two of them came together.
Master Sergeant Even Keeler’s life was turned upside down when the Humvee he was in exploded and his best friend, Flynn Parker, died. Now he has lost his will to keep going and blames himself for not being prepared for the attack.
When Evan’s mom forces him to see how lucky he is to be alive, Evan knows the next step is going to see Flynn’s family.
Flynn’s twin sister January is not dealing with the loss and can the two of them overcome their loss together?
This was a good book about overcoming a devastating loss and finding a way out of the darkness.
My heart broke for everything that Evan had been through and I liked that he was struggling as you hear so many people that had been in combat that go through things like this. I liked that his mom finally got through to him and he decided to live again.
January was going through her own issues with the loss of her brother and I liked how the two of them came together but I was completely shocked at everything that she revealed to Evan.
I was sad when Evan had his episode of PTSD but I was glad that January was able to get through to him so he didn’t give up.
I loved the end and how it tied into Flynn!
Master Sergeant Evan Keeler and Jane Parker had known each other for years. Her twin brother was in the same military unit with Evan so they were very well acquainted and good friends. Coming back from war after being severely injured was a terrible hardship for Evan but more he could only see himself as a scarred monster.
Evan wasn’t the easiest character to like really however his self honesty was very appealing and what he suffered and went through in the war, horrific. He is the type of character that grows on you with the author’s build up of him. He wasn’t unappealing but as he said, he was very arrogant. Jane, or January, on the other hand was incredible. I have to say she’s much stronger than I would have been waiting all of those years however to each their own. I liked her backbone and the way she didn’t give in to Evan.
Some fabulous scenes helped to create a truly inspirational atmosphere about pain, death, wanting to live and being afraid. The children’s hospital scene on Christmas morning is one such memorable moment that made me stop and think hard. Living with PTSD is an area that is still so raw even with the huge amount of research that’s been undertaken. This book handles the topic well but it doesn’t back down from the ugly side of reality either and I applaud the author for her decision.
This story while thought provoking is also a genuine romance and very entertaining.
