I was so excited for a reverse harem football romance that I’m honestly super bummed. The biggest issue I had was that this really didn’t feel like a reverse harem. Jane repeatedly admits she loves one of the guys more and that she wishes things were different. Like I’m sorry what!? In the end it felt like the other three were just her booty calls that her main man allowed her to keep.
Another issue I had was the lack of trigger warnings, there are two attempted rape scenes and the second gets pretty graphic. No trigger warning that I saw when reading the authors note in the front or the blurb so please be warned and look out for your mental health.
Overall this storyline just fell flat and was really only an okay read that I don’t foresee myself wanting to reread again in the future.
Not bad but there is a LOT of angst. There is definitely a hierarchy amongst her boys and I don’t like that at all. Overall the book is just okay.
***I decided to review an ARC of this book.***
This was my first book by Janie Marie. This book is pretty much told by Jane. She is falling for 4 boys. Ryder, David, Tercero and Luc. David is her stepbrother, but she was falling for him before their parents got married. Ryder is David’s enemy but Jane has always had a crush on him. Tercero and Luc are Ryder’s brothers. Tercero is quiet, but good with Jane. Luc is older than the rest and is more mature than the others.
This book is told by Jane, with a few chapters told by David/Ryder. I really wanted to like this book. However as Jane was trying to figure out which guy she liked she kept calling herself a whore and hoe. Her mother also called her a whore at one point. The four guys just went a long with it and didn’t correct her. That bothered me a lot. Also the bonus epilogue I was like what the fluff? I had a hard time reading this book. I really wanted to like it, but I guess this one just wasn’t for me.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Let me start by saying that this is my first time reading anything by this author, Janie Marie. I’m certain the process of writing a novel is not an easy feat to accomplish and I applaud this author for her hard work in creating this work of fiction. Having said that, I have had a very difficult time in connecting with these characters. The dialogue between these young adults, which is often formal, seems a bit unrealistic for high school students to be using. The formality and the characters speaking in complete sentences and perfect grammar might make sense if they were speaking to parents or other authority figures, but in conversations with each other it feels inauthentic. I’ve also had a tough time in connecting with the heroine. I have no problem with reverse harem stories as long as they are consensual. However, some parts of this story feel like the heroine is nothing more than a puppet being played with by the young men in her life. It seems like she is far too dependent on these young men for her sense of self-worth and her decision-making. I’m sure plenty of people have enjoyed and will enjoy this book, it’s just not for me.
I love Reverse Harem Romances. When I saw this book, I just knew I had to read it.
Jane is a girl who’s in love with her best friend. And that best friend soon becomes a stepbrother.
But he’s not the only boy in her life, there are three more. She’s tutoring one and feels safe with the other two.
One morning, when she’s trying to wake up her stepbrother, changes everything. There are no boundaries left, there is no holding back, there’s love, lust and yes – a lot of anger.
I think this would have been way better for me, if I’d actually read the other books in a Gods & Monsters trilogy first. But I can not recommend it highly enough to a reader who adores a good Reverse Harem romance with plenty of sexy sceenes.
