Sometimes, you just can’t let go, until you need to. James, medically discharged suffers from PTSD. He has an over abundance hero complex that compels him to step up when he sees what he perceives someone hurting or bullying another. He makes a rookie mistake during a domestic disagreement. He not only ends up stopping the altercation, but the person he thought he was saving, attacks him. Rookie mistake! He came to check on his brother, Finn and was satisfied realizing Miguel would take care of Finn. He suffered a little guilt, leaving Finn behind, but he had no choice but to leave. He has quite a few demons he was fighting. Detective Ross, seems to always turn up during his miscalculations. Detective Ross, is attracted to James. He recognizes James has issues, but his interest/attraction has a higher precedent. James, saves Ross’s sister and niece and steps into an entirely new intrigue. James, gets an opportunity to utilize his military skills while honing his social skills. The hits for the group at The Gates keep on coming. The journey for James and Ross is not easy. They each must face some growth. Can James and Ross trust each other? Can James and Ross respect their individual professions? Does James’ nightmare ever end? Does Ross get his man? Good story. Well done! I received an ARC from Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
A very exciting story. Nice to see previous characters in these subsequent books of this series. James and Ross with their love/hate relationship is fun to watch. Even more fun is when the emotions turn to strictly love. The excitement this story delivers is quite enough to keep you on the edge of your seat. Very enjoyable.

James and Ross are two men who like to be in control, yet find themselves in situations where some of that control has to be relinquished and/or shared with someone else. How hard that must be for a military man and a detective. Both of whom chose careers that can take an emotional toll, if you allow it.
Detective Richard Ross finds himself in need of James’s help for his family and James Masterson answers the call.
When someone tries to kill Ross’s sister and niece, he steps in and becomes the surprising hero. Not only to help who will become his new family, but for the man he falls for. While saving others, can James also save himself by letting go? Will Richard be there to catch him.
Another good addition to the Gates of Heaven series.

James’s shoulders aren’t wide enough to carry all the blame he burdens himself with. He makes you smile with his tough-guy attitude and snark. He doesn’t realize how many people are in his corner.

I think James may have stolen my heart
This series never fails to touch on all my emotions.
I laugh. I cry. I gasp. I fall in love.
James has carried his guilt for years holding it tightly to his chest.
He feels he has earned the nightmares, the flashbacks.
Put simply – he failed.
First with regards to his siblings, despite everything he did he failed to protect them.
Then again when the tables turned deadly during his last mission making a mockery of his attempts to save his team …
James was balancing dangerously on the edge until that one touch brought him back. Calmed him during the storm.
Problem is that touch comes from a man that only sees him as an irresponsible pain in the backside.
When we were first introduced to James during Finn’s story we were only given a small glimpse at his character. It was enough to make me curious and have me looking forward to the opportunity to read his story.
This story far exceeded my expectations
I cried for James.
He reminds me of a big teddy bear his heart is in the right place he just steps a bit heavy at times
Ross is Mr. In Control, not in a bad way just a bit overbearing at times.
He likes to be prepared, proactive if you will.
He is protective of the ones he loves and is more comfortable if he knows he has control of the situation… okay maybe a little OCD
When a case he thought was closed backfires putting his family and himself in danger he finds he has no choice but to trust the one person who is constantly reckless and brings nothing but chaos into his world.
Can two completely opposite souls find common ground?
Can James accept his past and allow himself a happy ever after?
Will Ross chill the heck out?
All these answers and more await you
